If you charged your phone and using carplay and GPS, your phone screen should turn off automatically. So why would it overheat if the screen is off?

If the screen is on, it would be on the max brightness due to daylight. This plus GPS would increase power usage and heat.

Are you asking me why it gets hot? The answer is because Apple still hasn’t figured out the thermals.

Yes, screen is off but phone still gets too hot where it stops charging.

There's something seriously wrong with your unit. Unless you're doing everything outside in 120F weather.

Take it back to Apple. Complaining here isn't helping you.

From an unnamed research paper, the cause of climate change is the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16. When used by millions at the same time, the temperate of the planet rises.

Can someone please tell how the screen dimming behaves in hot environments. Usually when I'm out on the beach or so, the 15Pro always dims so quickly. Is this the same with the 16 pros or do they have at least improvements here?

I was hoping the 16 Pro Max would improve the thermals but sadly it does not. Why Apple can’t make these phones not get ridiculously hot is beyond me. I also own a Galaxy S24 Ultra and it doesn’t have any of these thermal problems.

Using CarPlay plus GPS makes the phone get super hot just like it did on the 15 Pro Max. I don’t use a case so I most likely feel it more but Apple unfortunately didn’t get the thermal issues fixed like they said they did. Typing on the phone now after parking and the screen is all dimmed out because the phone got so hot. I can do the exact same things on the S24 Ultra and it stays cool as can be.

What a disappointment.

Mount both phones directly next to each other and use GPS + Carplay/Android Auto and take a video showing temperature measurements.

Either phone will throttle and dim if they are mounted on the dash, baking in direct sunlight (while also charging) and being used intensively, IMO.

My phone only gets hot when GPS is on and screen is at full brightness. but it is not hot if screen is off while GPS is on carplay.

Yours is still hot even though screen is off

My 16 Pro Max is much better then 15 PM heat wise and thermals, but doesn't appear that way for the OP, his seems the same. So inconclusive.

funny because in battery life tests S24 ultra always runs hotter than the iphone does.

I will say since the 18.01 update my phone is running much cooler now. I drove about 4 hours round trip yesterday with GPS and wireless car play while listening to a podcase and the phone never got hot. So maybe I just had something screwy going on on mine that this update fixed. Either way I'm glad this is hopefully resolved.

I agree. Battery life also seems better (so far).

This is one of those things I think will get better overtime with each new chip, I hear the 16 series heats up but not as much as 15 and the 17 should get better too.

My experience on 15 PM is that pre iOS 17.3 (may even be around 17.2.x) the phone would heat up significantly then after 17.3 it was mostly great unless one is using the Camera extensively.

My 16PM gets warm while using Google Maps and Apple Music via wireless CarPlay and charging via cable. It doesn’t get hot to the point where it throttles and has to dim the screen however.

I’m coming from a 12P which did have the issues that OP mentioned. The setup between the two phones should be the same as I used Apple’s built in software to transfer the settings and files from my old phone to the new one.

My 11 Pro max heated a lot in normal battery charging to the point it'll stop at 80% to wait to cool down. it was frustrating.
Not with the 16 Pro max, never ever gotten hot even in normal use nor charging.

then again that is sort of not a very very fair comparison as the newer phone has a much better thermal dissipation system and an efficient chip. two in one improvement vs the other which was.. Okay.

Was your iphone screen on highest brightness while using carplay GPS, like last time?

Spent a ton of time filming in the sun today and the screen never dimmed. Same usage with my 15PM would have had the screen so dim I wouldn’t have been able to see to continue. Phone got warm but nothing like my 15PM.

Thanks for the info on this.. I kinda asked about this but it got pushed off.. I have a 12 Pro so I was wondering if it would changed.. I plug my phone to charge while using GPS and video call and same if it's not dimmed with the screen the phone is super hot. I've had a few times where the phone would shut off.

My issue is the amount of lag when it gets to this point.

It’s likely because OPs phone is also charging at the same time.

Yeah pretty sure that’s it. It is much better with the update though. No charging paused indicators since that 18.01 update.

Mine gets pretty hot when charging, but I think that is due to the faster charging speeds that the 16 Pro supports. Still wonder how it will affect my battery life in the future.
