Yes, and no.

What basically happened is this – Wimbledon (they of Vinnie Jones fame) dropped down the divisions after their spell in the top flight and fell on hard times. The new town of Milton Keynes meanwhile lacked a league club or suitable stadium, but a consortium led by a chap called Peter Winkelman proposed building a ground and attracting an established club to relocate. A number of southern clubs – including Wimbledon – were sounded out but none agreed to the plan until Wimbledon gained a new chairman who was prepared to relocate the club, which at this point was in administration.

Winkelman bought the club and changed its name to the Milton Keynes Dons ('Dons' being a nickname of Wimbledon), as well as their colours and crest. The new club also claimed Wimbledon's history, including its FA Cup victory in the eighties.

Naturally this didn't go down well, either to Wimbledon's fans or the football community in general – teams relocating from their traditional areas is a very rare occurrence, and Winkelman's plan was compared unfavourably to the franchise system used in some other countries and sports, most notably the US of course. Effectively buying Wimbledon's place in the League made the new club something of a pariah, and it's still very unpopular a decade later despite renouncing the old club's history and returning trophies and memorabilia to the local borough.

In response to effectively losing their club, Wimbledon's supporters formed a new one – AFC Wimbledon – and started life in non-League football sharing a ground with Kingstonian. Over the years they've moved up the divisions and a few seasons back won promotion into the Football League, and currently play a tier below the MK Dons. This FA Cup tie will be the first time the two clubs have met on the pitch, and naturally there's a bit of a media buzz over it...

That is some history no wonder that there is a dislike for MK Dons.

Spain seem to do ok though :)

So not too much happening in my week away. Well, apart from the birth of Ms Fizzoid. Unfortunately she was a little smaller than predicted, so will have to wait before her stripy present from Dad fits ;)

England friendly tonight. I'm hoping Zaha gets a decent run out, although is expected to start on the bench

If you keep as much possession of the ball you are bound to score sooner or later.

Welcome little Ms Fizzy and a big
congratulations_028.gif
to the parents.

Congratulations to Mr & Mrs Fizz on the safe arrival of their baby girl. If need a bit of pink in your life, EFC's away kit from last season is available at decent discounts. But does your kid really need such a scarring experience so early in life?

Congrats Fizzy!

Congrats to you and lil' Fizzy then!

I won't watch the friendly today - total boredom imho. And I'm glad that RVP does see it the same way, so he can concentrate on the more important Fantasy League.

Well it could be total boredom, but it also can be a surprise. Me, I am looking forward to it. There was rumour that Reuss will play a striker, though I guess it is just media's speculation. I would be totally content with Holtby playing (given the U20 matches), too. You see my requirements are low :)
(btw. I find it silly that the media is trying to make it look like some sort of a personal cat fight between Van Ghal and Löw. They both seem to actually be totally ok with each other)

Of course you're right, and I wrote it somewhere before that e.g. Holtby would be the sole reason to watch it. But when Löw is trying out some things in friendlies, what I remember is that it always had little to no consequences for the regular games. Which is pointless then. But who knows - Löw has to deliver since the Italian debacle and that could be interesting too.

But cheers, mate! Didn't want to kill the excitement. :) You can report back if you want to, I'd like to read a little synopsis by HappyBunny and you. ;)

It wasn't pink it was salmon! Lol. Those were terrible kits, I still laugh when I occasionally see a 300 pound man in the stands wearing that kit.

A belated congrats to Fizzoid on the birth of his future World Cup star!!! Get her started early - watching matches with dad. :D

Salmon looks good. You just need to be man enough to go pink. ;)

The match seen from this small corner of Europe.
The press here are not playing up the match as anything other than a good way of trying out new players, and maybe tactics. The Dutch national team is in the process of rebuilding after the disaster of European Championship in the summer 2012.

Yeah, I agree. You have a new coach so it's a completely different perspective. Hope Van Gaal is going strong with the Netherlands. It's a pity to see their decline. BRA - NED used to be state of the art not too long ago....and a small corner indeed, but not regarding football. They pretty much set the standard not long ago. And how this little corner influenced Barca and by that the whole game right now....sheeesh! Errr, cheers!

Russia 2-2 USA

Didn't watch the match but read some of the commentary. two late goals turn a 1-1 draw into a 2-2 draw. I'd say that going over to Russia and getting draw is a good result for the USA, even if the performance leaves something to be desired.

As usual, Tim Howard was a hero in goal.

Probably I'm the only one here knowing him, but today Alex Alves died by cancer. He got only 37 years old.

He never lived up to expectations, made a lot of trouble, was by far the most expensive Hertha transfer and also the first Brazilian in Berlin, he shot the goal of the year 2000, came in white fur to the christmas party, lost all of his money and died a poor man, who couldn't afford a proper treatment. He was blessed with talent but lacked a good deal of luck :(

Maybe he never really grew up until his very last moments, but always came across as a life loving young man. So sad.

Well looking from the line up the german side can hardly called be called a B-squad:

Neuer - Höwedes, mertesacker, hummels, lahm - Bender, Gündogan - Müller, Holtby, Reus - Götze

i suspect the last 4 will be hardly fixed to those positions .. looks similiar to spain with their false 9 setups

edit: the most boring NL vs GER match of all time so far

Netherland 0 Vs Germany 0

Well 92 minutes of complete boring football, Germany played a little better in a match that was no advertisement for Football.

This weekend Sponge Bob free :D

On to this weekends Eredivisie

Saturday

ADO Den Haag Vs PSV
This is eighth against first, ADO is difficult to beat at home. It is their away record which lets them down. I expect that PSV will grind out a win, mostly because PSV is the only Dutch club who regularly wins ugly.(And makes no apology for it, to them a win is a win)

One for you JC.
PEC Zwolle Vs NAC Breda
This seventeenth against fourteenth, I expect a very tight game, with more emphasise on not losing. It will not be a game for the neutral spectator, but is very important to the real club supporters. A loss for either club means losing more ground with rest of the divisie. I see a scoreless draw, and a rather dull match. Most likely with a red card or two.

Ajax Vs VVV Venlo
This fourth against sixteenth, on paper Ajax should have no problems, but at home Ajax have looked anything but secure. That being said I still see Ajax as winners

Sunday

FC Utrecht Vs FC Twente
This second against sixth, depending on the result of ADO/PSV Twente could regain top position in the Eredivisie. Twente will want to show that they are still a force to be reckoned with for top spot. Utrecht at home are always a difficult team to beat. I do however see Twente winning this match.

You are not the only one. Although I have to admit to not being a Hertha fan, it is always tragic, when someone dies at such a young age. Him and Marcelinho truly stood out.

Boris Vukcevic did finally arose his from coma after eight weeks. Hope he can fully recover.
