I must say Costa Rica have been a major surprise, I do know that Lord Blackadder has in the past commented on how good they are, but in major competitions they are a force to be reckoned with.

I'm halfway through watching the full France/Switzerland game, and I reckon that's the best half of football Giroud has ever played.

Kicks a central defender in the face, forcing the very early introduction of Senderos. Bullet-like header for his goal. Brilliant head butt on the rubbish right back. Great defensive header then runs the length of the pitch in approximately four seconds before delivering a perfect cross for France's third.

Is it because he's playing for France, or is it because of his totally on point Brasil 2014 Brohican?

Either way, I hope he brings it back to The Home Of Football. Mario who? The chequebook stays closed.

But knowing your luck, Oliver Giroud will hang around norff London, always just missing out on titles and cups, and then transfer to either Manchester Utd/City.:p

I dunno, I think Giroud's a London boy. Not sure he'd be high on either of those teams' shopping lists, either.

But if he's ever made captain he'll be off within a year, obviously.

Giroud scores against bad defenders, Mario can score against everybody. Except Costa Rica of course. :D

Well, considering it was his first season in the PL rather fine. But he isn't threatening enough and lacks abit technique for a serious CL contender imho. But he and Mario could make for a great team.

Second season. In the 12-13 league season he scored 11 from 34 (versus 16 from 36 in 13-14). But the only two teams of any note he scored against were Spurs and Liverpool.

He's good enough to keep Bendtner and Sanago out of the starting eleven :)

But what would Podolski, or even Joel Campbell, achieve if played in that position?

Giroud seems to spend too much time on the floor in big matches. I don't know if he just needs to bulk up a bit or if the pace of the Premier League is simply too much for him.

He's a big boy: according to UEFA he's 192cm / 88kg. Or 6'3" / 13st 12lbs.

I don't know why UEFA should want to keep such statistics, but if they're right then he's roughly Drogba-sized, and significantly beefier than Andy Carol.

The last thing he needs is to bulk up. He just needs to homme up.

Speaking of Andy Carol, why don't they get him into the national team. Didn't I see him in one national team match a few years ago? My memory might be wrong, but I have the vague picture of him in my head that he was not that bad.

Messi absolutely bailed out Argentina there. As a unit they look flat and vulnerable. But a moment of pure magic from the little magician.

Credit to Iran for being tough but there are only so many 0-0 draws I can stand. Iran is probably Tony Pulis' team of the tournament.

I had to go check the numbers myself because I didn't believe it. He seems like a much smaller player. Carroll is another example of a big guy who spends too much time on the turf.

Iran were tough too break down, and if anybody was going to do it was going to be a bit of Messi magic.

I do think that Iran had a good call for a penalty, if that had been Brazil.:(

Great match Germany-Ghana. Lots of chances at both ends, but both teams are failing to finish them. Ghana have really come out swinging though, if they can show just a little more precision in front of goal they can put Germany in an awkward position.

Germany look to be trying to Arsenal the ball into the net, maybe a bit too over complicated at the moment.
