Disgusting 2nd half performance that.

I mean what we're they playing at.

Now they have to play either Bayern, PSG, Athletico, Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Always making life harder for themselves.

lol @ those mocking Dortmund for losing 2:1 in Napoli

as excepted IMHO
Napoli is a very different beast at home (and now looking forward to play Juventus in the europa league ;) )

and still .. Dortmund nearly stumbled against Marseille and blew it

on a very very positive note: Austria Vienna won 4:1 against Zenit St. Petersburg ... first austrian CL victory CL since 10 years or so (and sadly means an unlucky 4th place with 5 points .. 1 point behind 2. place and only a few goals away from 3rd.)

Bad result for Arsenal. Though, the final standings for the group are just about right. Dortmund were always going to be a very tough opponent.

...and Assem Allam has made his formal application to the FA Council to change our playing name to 'Hull Tigers'.

Come on then, FA - show us what you're made of.

If the FA rubber stamp this, it will set an incredibly bad precedent and will demonstrate that they are merely stooges. As if we needed more evidence for that...

Arsenal got through though, right?

Typical member of the FA Council?

Nuts if they allow it - they wouldn't let some bonkers German owner of Manchester United change the name to Trafford Teufels.

Trafford Teufels :D (how about Trafford Truffle :D)

on Dortmund:
the red card for Marseille screwed it just a tiny little bit for me (much to hard anyway for my taste). I wish D. had won against 11. (also, I am always unsure, when Stieber comes - this time I was wrong :). Lucky he did not try to shoot that goal directly and assisted to Großkreutz instead.)

You mean Schieber. Yea, substitutions were strange, but made sense after all. Hofmann is a great talent, although he should've bagged the one at the end. So young, playing his first games in the A-team and convincing in many crucial games already. Great prospect. Durm as well. Sarr made a very impressive pro-debut as well yesterday.

Second yellow was a hard decision, but I say this (knowing that it would be hard to say it when one's 'own' team is punished): If revs don't start punishing overtly dramatical/theatrical dives - and it was a dive imho, he get's touched that's true but after the ball was played and then played the dying swan (?, not sure if that exists: sterbender Schwan) - in crucial games and or moments like this players will never learn it. So I actually concur with the decision although we all know that another rev could've given Sahin red plus a pen i.e.

Schalke's second goal was crazy though and if this wasn't happening on purpose I'd eat my nonexisting hat. :D

i was switching back forth between the dortmund and schalke game so i saw about 40 minutes of the schalke game:

considering all the absolute sitters Schalke created(quite beautifully) and how they missed them i think Basel can be lucky walking away with that 2:0

the official ueafa statistic counts 21 "goal attempts" ... (3 more than Barca had in the 6:1 trouncing of Celtic) .. and for the most part outplayed basel clearly

the second goal was obviously offside but basel walking away from that game with a draw ? that would have been more comical than the mud wrestling in istanbul

edit: on Julian Schieber: i consider him getting substituted into a game the equivalence of "throwing in the towel" ... he simply isn't good enough for Dortmund's ambition to be a CL club or contender for the Bundesliga title... he's a third rate striker at best
Lucas Barrios was the much more capable player in the air and especially on the ground as backup player

Lewandowski is a world class Nr9 striker but Schieber is a Top 2. league player normally (he would feel right at home at Nürnberg or Augsburg perhaps)

Agreed takao. Still that second goal was blatantly offside - diesn't matter how many sitters they'ce missed before. Dortmund should have won 5:0 by that logic too. Agreed re Schieber, though I first read it like: throwing in the tower which is also quite right. Also renember: it was also Schieber who brought Dortmund the last minute win against malaga last year. But yeah, don't think he'll make many games for Dortmund either.

edit: I suck at texting mobile.

Where as Ajax were unlucky to go out in the CL, PSV had only themselves to blame. PSV dominated play in the centre of the pitch but the last 16 meters was toothless.

The latest scuttlebutt in MLS is that Toronto FC are going to sign Jermain Defoe at the end of the European club season, or possibly even in January. The fee is rumored to be $10 million and wages of $150k a week (not sure if that's USD or CDN).

He isn't worth that. But it would make him the biggest money move in MLS history.

In other news, New York City FC seem to be closer to a stadium deal. The $400 million stadium would be located next to Yankees Stadium - where they will start playing in 2015 as an MLS expansion team.

Oddly crap on the road though.

They have the best squad in the league. I imagine they are going to start picking up more away points soon enough.

The top 8-9 spots are still very much up in the air this season. We could see a lot of changes yet. Everton are quietly putting in a very strong campaign, Spurs are still hanging in there and Newcastle are getting some big results. Man Utd look weak at the moment but there is a long way to go yet. Liverpool are going to be be hard pressed.

Please take him.

Please take him.

It seems Toronto are serious, even though it sounds like crazy money. He'll bag goals but the asking price is so high it will be hard to build a balanced team around him.

I'll take Columbus' Frederico Higuain over him. Far better value.

Does this mean Defoe thinks his England career is over? Even Beckham struggled to get caps while playing in MLS.

For a supposed fortress we still managed to score 3 goals at the Etihad (could've been more...granted same for them) all while putting in a tired and sloppy performance. And thats with Kompany on the field.

But City were the better side and showed what we already knew i.e. their attacking prowess.

The title won't be decided this month or even in January. United won the title last year despite losing to rivals.

But cue pundits already waxing lyrical about City and handing them the title. The BBC feed almost made want to close my browser window. I mean when you get articles like this you can't help but laugh.

Meh...whatever. Glad the crunch week is over. Now they have a solid week to prep for the Chelsea game.

EDIT: Why have West Brom sacked Clarke

In a pleasing stat, Hull City currently enjoy the joint best home defensive record in all of Europe's top leagues. Only Bayern Munich can match our shot-stopping stinginess.

That's on the pitch, of course. Off it everywhere we go, we let the FA know, we're Hull City.

This week in the Eredivisie.

Friday
PEC Zwolle 1-2 Heerenveen
It was a horror night for PEC they lost again and are slowly sinking. They played the better football for long periods but that is of little use if you lose in the end. Heerenveen just took their chances better.

Saturday

ADO Den Haag 1-2 RKC Waalwijk
Den Haag are just a shadow of themselves, Waalwijk are a completely new team since the win against Feyenoord.

FC Twente 3-1 Go Ahead Eagles
With this win they head the table as of Saturday night, on goal difference.

NEC 4-3 Roda JC
This was the match of the Saturday, NEC were 2 goals down and failing to even challenge, then the second half and the fight back began. It was excitement till the final whistle.

Sunday

SC Cambuur 1-2 Ajax
Ajax had a real problem with Cambuur, it was only in the 90+1 minute that they got the winner after a foul; and a red card for M.Ritzmaier from Cambuur.

Vitesse 3-2 NAC Breda
Vitesse looked a bit shocked as NAC scored against the run of play. The penalty was a moment of panic by the defense, but 10 minutes later NAC was guilty of the same fault. Vitesse then began a period of dominance, but only scored twice more. NAC came strongly back in the last 10 minutes and scored but it was not enough.

Feyenoord 1-0 FC Groningen
This was a very dull match, that Groningen lost they had most of the ball but failed to do anything with it. This is a great result for Feyenoord, if a bit lucky, they scored in 7 minutes and basically held on for the win, but they still count.

Heracles 2-0 AZ
The surprise of the afternoon, AZ slipped up badly. They were quickly one goal down after 12 minutes, they dominated the play but were caught on the break in the last minutes of the game.

FC Utrecht 1-5 PSV
Everybody knew that one day this season PSV would rediscover their scoring boots. Utrecht were down to 9 men by the end of the match.

The Eredivisie Table

1 Vitesse 36pts
2 Ajax 34pts
3 FC Twente 33Pts
4 Feyenoord 30pts
5 SC Heerenveen 26pts

9 PEC Zwolle 22pts

Trainer Ruud Brood was fired by Roda JC this Sunday, the reason given the results were bad.
