They still move forward, but it seems they try to rather to do more passing (+ immediate tackling, when they loose the ball) and keep the ball (more horizontal then backwards, though). - Well, I am not sure, if that style is what people expect from an English side.

...

Halfway between Spain and long ball - kick and rush - would be acceptable. :)

Lord Blackadder,

Whilst Sterling is talented, I think he had a poor attacking game v Switzerland; him and Rooney started badly re attack - defended well. Rooney came into the game - accurate headers, passing..., Sterling just had the cross. Of course, that can be enough to win a game and at his age performances are likely to swing between very good and poor.

Happybunny,

Netherlands missed lots of good chances, plus Janmaat . Next game they take the chances and Janmaat doesn't screw up; is Hiddink a hero?

Cheers,
OW

Last night one of the commentators remarked, This wouldn't have happened under Louis.;)
But you are right of course, once a win is had, this will be forgotten. But only two months ago, we were on top of the world.:p

This afternoon, Assem Allam will be chairing a press conference in which we are told he will be discussing his vision for the 'future of Hull City Tigers'.

Here we go again.

Ok, so it's for a car, but the colour is right!

Should you be approached by Azerbaijani businessman Hafiz Mammadov, stay away!

His takeover seems like nothing but a ploy to get free shirt sponsorship!

The club is currently for sale, says Allam, but if a buyer can't be found he'll give it away for nothing. Now, I clearly don't possess his renowned business acumen but even so I'd think saying you'll give something away isn't the strongest bargaining position to put yourself in as you're trying to sell it.

That was a bizarre 40 minutes of rambling, so much so that the local radio station cut short its coverage. If Radio Humberside thinks you're tedious, you've got a problem.

In short...

  • He's appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against the FA's block on changing the name. When asked, he had no idea how long this process would take. Strangely, football journo David Conn tweeted afterwards that he'd been in touch with the CAS and they had no record of any appeal being made by the club, likewise the FA who would be informed of such a process. Hmm...
  • He claims too that a shirt sponsor pulled out of a deal on the day the FA blocked the name change, we then had to settle for the lesser deal offered by 12Bet. Oddly, this directly contradicts an interview given by his son who said no sponsorships depended on or would be affected by the name change being rejected.
  • He helpfully pointed out that when he talks about Hull City being up for sale he's referring to 'the football club', and not 'the council'. I think it was supposed to be his attempt at a joke.
  • To illustrate that he is indeed a man of his word, he pointed to his promise that he'd walk away from the club within 24 hours if the FA said no. All the proof we need, as I'm sure you'll agree.

He also still genuinely appears to think the club is actually called 'Hull City Tigers'. Crazy stuff.

Of course it’s no joking matter, these loach businessmen come in and buy a football club, like it’s any other asset. But in fact it’s not like other assets, a football team is far more it’s a center point for a community, it’s mostly got a rich history going back years, and people have a real passion for the club.
These businessmen also have a very nasty habit of saddeling the club with huge debts, which of course frighten off new owners.:(

With this type of ownership on the increase, it’s the fans who suffer.

I have always hoped that UEFA would set up guide lines as to the proper running of a football team for owners.

I don't know if you're aware of this Happybunny, but Allam pointed out that to the east the closest top flight club is in Rotterdam!

There's clearly a huge untapped market we can exploit there, with no other clubs in between us and the Netherlands.

That sounds very FISHY to me.:p

Bizarre. I wonder if it will end up like the Ashley-Newcastle imbroglio, with nobody stepping up to pay the asking price and Ashley ultimately continuing on as owner. Hull are not necessarily in bad shape at the moment but any prospective new owner would have to cover all the debt owed to Allam.

At least Cellino's takeover of Leeds has demonstrated that the fit and proper test is no obstacle. Kim Jong Un could pass it with flying colors.

Hi guys,

I don't post here much anymore, but I wanted to draw everyone's attention to Fancis Benali's big run. If you don't already know, saints legend Franny Benali has been running a 1,000 mile journey from St. James' Park down to St. Mary's via the other 18 premier league grounds.

He's currently on his way down to St. Mary's and is due to arrive at half time in the Newcastle game on Saturday.

He's raising money for cancer research UK.

It's a really incredible feat, he's been running around 45 miles a day for 3 weeks.

Arsenal let victory slip through their fingers as the Sheik's Toy takes advantage of some dodgy marking on corners. Man City went out to physically batter Arsenal, lots of fouls.

City were missing two of the players that hurt Liverpool the most (Toure and Jovetic), but they are still exceptionally deep and talented. Welbeck did OK, Sanchez was excellent and Wilshire conjured a nice finish for his goal. City should have had a penalty for Wilshire's handball though.

That injury to Debuchy looked really bad. Hope it isn't.

Tried to park the bus when they don't have the personnel to do so. Concede and lose a vital player in the space of a few minutes.

Still only 1 point behind City and 3pts behind the summit. The real test will be at Anfield, Stamford Bridge and the Etihad. If they come out of those unscathed then they should be fine.

But today showed that Arsenal have improved offensively from last season. But you wonder if they've regressed defensively. And will it get worse? 2 Defenders out injured. Literally no more cover now.

I wouldn't say they've regressed, but they now have serious injury problems at the back. Last season they suffered a few big drubbings, let's see if they can avoid that this season.

First game Kagawa: 1 goal / 1 assist did he already surpass his stats at Utd.?

Liverpool were dreadful. The media will latch on to the absence of Sturridge (and Suarez) as the cause. Ballotelli and Markovich eventually replaced by Lambert and Borini. None of those are completely convincing yet.

But really, Liverpool shouldn't have conceded in the first place and given Villa the chance to park the bus. Defense is still wobbly.

A bit like Arsenal in the latter end of last season. Absence of Sturridge and Sterling = No Pace running behind.

Therefore Villa could just stay compact and close off spaces, and mark out the distributors in 'Pool's team (Gerrard and Coutinho). Forcing 'Pool to pass sideways or backwards.

Then capitalise on Liverpool's long-term weakness to set pieces and counter attacks.

I think it's too early to pass judgment given the number of new players on the team; obviously later in the season I would have expected Balotelli and/or Lambert at least to have grabbed goals in this match.

Jury is out on Markovic - he's looked good in glimpses but isn't at the required level yet. Borini...he's obviously go some talent but Rogers doesn't rate him.

We've strengthened at the back over the summer - I think it's reasonable to expect significant improvement as the season goes on.

I agree. I think the season hasn't really kicked off yet. Teams still seem to be finding their feet and adjusting.

Except for Chelsea. But Chelsea have started well before and tapered out so you never know. Plus they haven't faced any of the big guns outside of Everton.

Still more to come from a few clubs.

EDIT:...and its begun. (LvG)

Well the big surprise of the weekend was in Zwolle

PEC 3-1 PSV

The match was marred by the injury to Memphis Depay, he is the top scorer in the Eredivisie and the pivot for PSV.
PEC took their chances and made them count.
