Looks like said chap was right...

Cracking kit, shame about the baggage-laden crest.

Interesting. It looks exactly like the guernsey worn by the Hawthorn football club in the AFL:

A little darker on the stripes of Hull though. I wonder if the clubs are linked somehow.

No link, unless it's buried in the mists of time. We've worn black and amber since 1904, basing the colours on the defunct Hull Town who played in the 1880s.

That said, there's a chap who has a habit of going to watch City wearing shirts of clubs from other sports which share our colours - I'm pretty sure he wore a Hawthorn top for a spell. ;)

Ton of coincidence then. The Modern-day Hawthorn club was founded in 1902, though 3 different variants of the club were created and disbanded between 1883 and 1899.

You give me an idea though. I should show up at a Philadelphia Eagles game wearing a West Coast Eagles jersey.

You know, you may want to see if those teams could become sister teams. Or better, looking at the mascot, it also bears a little resemblance to the Richmond Football Club in the AFL. I know there is such a program between the St. Kilda Saints in the AFL, and the New Orleans Saints in the NFL. There may also be one between Detroit and Brisbane (Lions).

Columbus 2-1 Montreal

Finally, a win for Columbus. Midfielder Bernardo Anor's brace overcame Montreal despite a good goal from grizzled Serie A vet Marco di Vaio. Our new manager is building from the back, and our defense is solid this season (Michael Parkhurst and Giancarlo Gonzalez have been outstanding) but we desperately need a skillful forward.

transfer markets...

I wonder that Christoph Kramer (it's the one that got knocked out in the Finale) is a target for clubs, since he hasn't played so much in the WC. Leverkusen, who lended him to Mönchn-Gladbach, said they will get him back after the season and keep him. (Gladbach and SSC Neapel were interested).

Interesting, Mainz05 got Chile's defender Gonzalo Jara. Without fee! First decision by the new danish coach. He said, he will fit the playing style, since he can play every defense position and opens up matches very good, is a teamplayer, technically ripe, good in one-on-one and hardworking." (Am looking forward to see, how Kasper Hjulmand will start, what he keeps and what he makes different than Tuchel.)

Talking about Tuchel, there are still rumors, he could be under the possible next assistants of Löw. Still wonder, how they think both will get along. Tuchel would possibly disagree on tactics and then fight with Löw. I mean, he can joke and stuff, but he also gets easily angry sometimes, when someone has another opinion, as far as from what I have seen from him in interviews and at the pitch. Also, one can imagine how these two tactic freaks would add up and how the playing would get more and more tactical.
They say Frank Wormuth, current U20-coach, will more likely get the job.

Also, Nadine Angerer, womens national teams world goal kepper of the year, has got a second (after the tip game campaign) deal with nationwide supermarket Lidl for sportswear advertisement. I mean, that is most likely very small money, but she is the first german female footballer with an advertising contract (Sweden had their national team players, allready a few years before, though and France, too, from what I have heard, but still...).

Probably just doesn't want to deal with the pressure anymore. Even more so considering the fact that he inadvertently got his team out of the competition (yes i know the whole team was dire).

Probably too guilt ridden to wear an English shirt again.

Still holding on to the LFC shirt because he wants to play in the CL again. And still earn some wages in the interim.

I'd think the opposite.

If the body holds up, I'd think they'd want to retire at least in the next year, if not 2, especially with Rio 2016 coming up.

BL.

Just curious, why would Rio 2016 have any impact?

----------

So Wigan announced their new kits, and basically they are going to be Sheffield Wednesday at home, and Brazil(-ish) away:

Does one have to be actively playing the sport to be selected to represent their country in the Olympics? If so, that would be the most opportune place to bow out, as it would be the next biggest stage.

i would rate the EURO champions, champions league, Confed cup, all higher than the olympic football tournament which is nothing more than a youth tournament

i would even say the play at the euro u21 or the world champ u21 to be better.

England doesn't compete in the Olympics, Great Britain does (actually it's the United Kingdom but for some reason the team is called Great Britain). GB fielded an olympic football team in the last olympics because it was in London, but won't do so again.

Man Utd have ads running on ESPN here in the states promoting their Chevy shirt. As a marketing and business organism they are a juggernaut.

Van Gaal is already moaning about the commercial commitments. And playing down expectations having realised City and Chelsea are significantly stronger.

okay.. this is getting way too damn coincidental! From the North Melbourne Football Club, again in the AFL:

The second one they have in long sleeve as well.

United's away kit

Holy crap, that's some serious corporate branding! But then again, with North Melbourne sponsored by Mazda, Adelaide sponsored by Toyota, and Geelong sponsored by Ford, so I really can't talk. :)

Chelsea and Man City are obviously the strongest at the moment. There's plenty of time left to sign players but at the moment I feel like Man Utd will be battling with Arsenal and Liverpool for 3rd & 4th this season.

I'm not going to be truly happy until Columbus has a proper striped kit, at least as an away shirt. Figure it out, people. (I guess we'll have to wait till the day we stop having to use template kits)

I actually like the concept behind the aforementioned commercial they put out (because I love reading about the history of the sport/olde-timey looking kits etc etc).

But why is it that whenever they stick footballers in ads, they force them to try and look fierce? It's silly. Rooney's delivery at the end is hilariously wooden.

You never know, Costa could pull a Torres, wouldn't be the first or second time Chelsea have ruined a striker.

Negredo already injured and Aguero still not 100% fit or even in form.

I too find the footballer tough look hilarious. Hilariously bad acting. Should stick to mostly making faces and being silent like Messi.

I guess LFC have gotten their revenge on Arsenal. By pipping the latter to the signatures of Remy and Manquillo.

Money-spinning friendlies in the US are in full swing...

Columbus 2-2 Crystal Palace

This was actually a decent match to watch, despite being an international friendly with unlimited subs. Columbus left out most of their starters but some of the younger players took their chances and impressed. Both Crew goals were solid headers off excellent crosses. Tony Pulis will have been annoyed to see a 5ft 9in midfielder beat his back line with a header for Columbus' second. Probably about 10k fans in the stands including a small contingent of hardy US-based Palace fans. Palace still look like they are building fitness, but they had some good moments.

Man Utd thrashed LA Galaxy 7-0 and the English press are hailing it as some sort of meaningful result and a demonstration of LvG's genius. Never mind that a £550m side just beat one that cost less than Rickie Lambert...I'm a little worried that this kind of friendly gives the Eurosnob fans excuses to keep ignoring the game here. :( They'll put on their new Chevy shirt and come to this match but are nowhere to be seen at MLS matches. Shame.

It was funny to see the despair of the normally pampered and entitled Galaxy fans though. If only I could see the same thing happen to Seattle fans...

Liverpool lost 1-0 to Roma at Fenway Park, Borini injured his shoulder. Man City thumped MLS champs Kansas City 4-1, Spurs squeaked by Toronto 3-2 with a late winner from Townsend.

Remy could be a decent buy for Liverpool, though the club's big spending spree looks more like Spurs' post-Bale rebuilding than that of Real or Chelsea. No really big names on big money. Will it be good enough?

The Man Utd reaction has been amusing. Plastered all over front pages. You know the opposition is subpar if Ashley Young manages to score twice.

As for LFC, Rodgers is in a catch 22 situation. He has to bulk up the squad because of the CL, but at the same time top quality signatures have proven elusive. Likely because he's still relatively unknown on the global stage.

He's already running out of money and time too. I doubt J. Henry will sanction another splurge anytime soon meaning Rodgers has to make the best of this window.

But i guess the plus side is that he's been buying EPL hardened names unlike Spurs who bought solely on unproven potential.

LvG is a canny operator; he knew that LA were relatively easy opponents for his better players. He put out a comically strong XI for a pre-season friendly in order to make a statement that he knew the media would run with.

He's a relative unknown, plus FSG's recruitment philosophy is skeptical of Galactico signings. The Carroll deal will probably be their biggest signing for a long time, and it was an expensive lesson. Liverpool need depth, and they can't afford to buy both depth and top quality at the same time.
