Disappointed, but not surprised. Turkey is a nasty place to play away, Besiktas are a decent team, and Liverpool failed to build enough of a league at Anfield.

Focus is now on the league/FA Cup.

The British Isles are looking pretty shaky in Europe right now.

I did not think it would come down to a penalty shoot-out!

Everton eased through.

I thought it possible given the narrow win in the first leg. Rogers was a bit cautious with his squad selection and subs, he was trying to balance all three competitions.

At the end of the day it was a very close match. Less distractions for the two remaining competitions.

I give Mourinho three seasons at most before he:
a) falls out with management/ownership
b) decides the FA/PL are persecuting him
c) throws his toys out of the pram when the (ridiculously indulgent) UK media 'turn on him'
d) some combination of the above

With only 'a' to go, he'll probably have a full house by the end of the season!

'Pool looked like they wanted to score in the first half.

biscuits(is that how you say it?) looked like they wanted to win in the 2nd.
they dominated for over 35 minutes.

It looked like, based on the 1st half, 'Pool would get one or two and advance easily. Then they played the second half.

I think that Everton was very lucky in drawing the Young Boys. The next round will be very different for them.

The footballing authorities seem to be tiring of him, but the media cut him a tremendous amount of slack. They generally seem to regard him as a pantomime villain, rather than the foul cancer on the face of sport that he truly is.

Well, he already boycotted speaking to the media when he blamed the BBC for getting one of his players suspended, so I'd say 'c' is already covered :)

Lord Blackadder,

You wouldn't have liked the English First Division or European football in the '70s and '80s, horrible time. :)

Centaurr; fingers crossed if Falcao plays.

Premier League teams in Europe; weak defences and outsmarted.

Cheers,
OW

van gaal out

I hope Man U can avenge their loss to Sunderland last season. It would be nice if they can get the full three points, I know wishful thinking, but I can wish.

West Ham now 8pts adrift of Europe. Palace Chairman looks to have made another masterstroke appointment in Pardew.

Another bad Man Utd performance, but a win after a penalty and a rebound tap-in. Falcao remains useless except when being fouled in the box.

At the end of the day, the manner of the wins are irrelevant if they result in a top four finish.

Mkhitaryan.

Hope those rumors of him leaving Dortmund after this season turn out to be crap. Love the guy.

That rare moment after Hertha and Dortmund both winning their games...

this is why i dont like van gaal. Falcao almost made a goal today against sunderland but received a penalty instead then they put rooney to make the penalty when they should have put falcao? van gaal says falcao needs more goals but yet doesnt give him the penalty shot...smh

slowly but surely Falcao IS improving

I was glad Man U won, but not pleased with their play, they have a lot of work to do. Was perplexed by the referee ejecting the wrong Black Cats player, to me it was clear John O'Shea was the offender.

If LvG is still at the helm next season then its almost safe to say United won't win the title then either. Might not even make top 4 depending on how much their rivals improve.

On another note. S'oton and West Ham's lack of depth is starting to show. Starting to struggle.

Forwards no longer scoring and no one else available to chip in.

The bigger boys however, have depth. Falcao or RVP not scoring but Rooney and midfield chipping in. Although tbh luck has a lot to do with it in United's case.

Even Liverpool suffered until their injury woes eased up

Arsenal have the most goals from all over the pitch compared to everyone else which is why they're always in and around it.

Qualifying for Europe requires staying power i.e. a thick squad. S'oton and West Ham don't really have that. And its starting to show.

As for the League Cup final, i'd like to think Spurs will cause an upset especially in the absence of Matic. But unfortunately for Spurs they turned Chelsea over at the Lane, which means Mourinho will not allow a repeat performance.

Therefore i think; 2-0 to Chelsea. Brutal. Efficient.

4-4-2 again from Manuel. You can't do that without a Ramires, Pogba or Matic in your midfield. You will suffer. And so he did.

Credit to LFC though who were relentless despite Europe.

Liverpool played well, Man City still less than the sum of their parts. Great performance from Liverpool - though the sobering reality is they remain two points behind a Man Utd who produced a flaccid performance against inferior opposition yet still won. You don't get extra points for style or less points for drudgery. All that matters is the result (otherwise Mourinho would never have had much of a career).

Liverpool may not be in the running for a title this season, but they can still spoil it for those who are. What goes around comes around.
