As for the League Cup final, i'd like to think Spurs will cause an upset especially in the absence of Matic. But unfortunately for Spurs they turned Chelsea over at the Lane, which means Mourinho will not allow a repeat performance.

Therefore i think; 2-0 to Chelsea. Brutal. Efficient.

...Yup

Another dull, effective performance from Chelsea. We all get another opportunity to see Brave John Terry romp around with a trophy.

Liverpool played well, Man City still less than the sum of their parts. Great performance from Liverpool - though the sobering reality is they remain two points behind a Man Utd who produced a flaccid performance against inferior opposition yet still won. You don't get extra points for style or less points for drudgery. All that matters is the result (otherwise Mourinho would never have had much of a career).

Liverpool may not be in the running for a title this season, but they can still spoil it for those who are. What goes around comes around.

i thought 'POOL kicked ass!

great result.

mourinho should have started with Cuadrado instead of willian but atleast they won :D

by the way, those 2 goals from 'pool were insane

I wonder if Levy will be predictable again by firing Pochy at the end of the season.

Another bad Man Utd performance...

Mixed rather than bad; poor/nervous start and grew into the game. Similar to Arsenal v Everton. The Liverpool v Manchester City game was what you often get with such fixtures; error after error and a few moments of quality - everyone all over the place somehow makes it exciting, end to end. Hopefully the City midfield fails to turn up for some more matches.

---

Mourinho channels Don Revie. Chelsea suss out the weak referees then hack away.

On LVG; didn't have to wait until 70 minutes for the change, standard with Moyes.

Centaurr - the penalty,

How many managers would give a fragile Falcao that penalty? It was 0-0, even at 4-0 you may not have to think so much about the result but you still have to consider how missing will affect the player.

Cheers,
OW

Good points, though given their experience and reputation I think it's fair to hold Man Utd's big-money signings to a fairly high standard - a standard they are still yet to reach. My instinct is they will be better next season though Falcao's knees are still a major concern. Liverpool's success is currently based largely on players (Markovic, Coutinho, Sturridge, Moreno) who were not rated as top-drawer talent. It remains to be seen how far they can develop, though after slow starts most of them have begun to produce. Speaking of developing talent, Ibe is out for a month with a bad knee. :(

In both cases the manager is trying to impose a new system on the club in the face of some personnel shuffles, so we can expect things to change.

Liverpool were lucky not to concede twice from Aguero, though they themselves could easily have scored a couple more. Liverpool looked remarkably fresh despite the long match in Turkey.

Rogers' use of a 3-man back line really opens up the flanks at times but the team seem able to deal with it reasonably well. It makes me want to re-read Inverting the Pyramid's section on the three man defense again...

I agree about Man U's money players, Mata and Di Maria need to step it up. Di Maria admits that he is still in the settling-in process.

BTW: Happy Birthday! Enjoy it!

Looked fast, tricky, and powerful. Hopefully it doesn't nag through his career.

Liverpool picked it up in the second half and deserved to win, Manchester City disappeared. Shame the Lallana goal was ruled out - touch, speed, and angle. Joins Henrik Larsson re top disallowed goals.

Finally, echo JamesMike but what were you doing here on your birthday!

Cheers,
OW

Thanks for the birthday wishes! - as a PhD student I never get days off, so I had my nose firmly to the grindstone yesterday, barring a nice lunch with a big glass of incredibly strong porter :D

Lallana's goal was almost Suarez-esque in the tightness of the angle, it was a shame he was offside.

In other news, the MLS season starts this week!!! Columbus are off to Houston on saturday for their first match of the season. There have been some roster shuffles in the offseason, most notably forward Kei Kamara coming in from Middlesbrough. Last season's playoff run was too short, I think most supporters are expecting a better post-seaason showing this time around.

Some idiot in the Guardian recently wrote an article about deciding which MLS club to support, and dismissed Columbus [Crew] because "it sounds like a haircut." I wonder what Crewe Alexandra would say about that.

MLS season starts on friday, excited about this since they will televise it every friday here in the States. its hard to see football in the U.S. unless you are paying for it. its a sign that football is getting bigger and bigger in the US...rooting for NY Red bulls and DC united

The big news here is that FC Twente, has had three points taken away by the KNVB.

The club has been making false book keeping, losses were made to look like profit, in fact it could turn out that FC Twente is bankrupt.

Between now and the begin from next season nearly the whole players group will be on the transfer market.

...

If you like rich Christmas cake - no icing - and cheddar cheese, you may like the three together.

The Crew? Can't support them, sound too much like a video game.

Kariya - Falcao - I'm not saying anything, Centaurr is around.

Happybunny - Any recommendations re FC Twente players? Seems Manchester United are after PSV's Memphis.

Cheers,
OW

Rumours saying United are apparently turning up their nose at the prospect of making the Falcao deal permanent.

you beat me to it, was just gonna post this. i also read that di maria will be leaving also due to not getting along with van gaal. 'Valencia' is also another team that is intested in Falcao besides PSG, Juventus & Liverpool, and the drama continues...

Algarve Cup women

Germany 2 goals in first 2 minutes against Sweden!

(Crazy to see how the ball is rolling without problems from one German player to the other, even when tackled.)

Huge news - a lot of clubs will probably be looking to get players on the cheap from Twente if they do collapse.

Naughty.

Kariya - Falcao - I'm not saying anything, Centaurr is around.

The question remains - is he simply struggling to adapt, or is he physically shot? Chelsea would buy him just to keep him from everyone else, but I remain unconvinced by Falcao and I can't see Liverpool laying down real money to buy him (especially from Man Utd).
