It's not far to go and I was hoping to, but I just moved house and apparently (according to the boss) I have a list of 'stuff' I need to do this weekend :(

Hull is in the pot for the euro league cup.
Mainz is out, after loosing 1:3 against Tripolis in the Quali (won 1:0 in the first match)...

But the Bayern vs MLS All stars match makes up for it ;)
(they are even bringing the whole 90min. right now on Sport1, here... though I already know the result from the news).

BBC story from last night, re the possibility of reinstatement...

Iin 2010, Uefa fined Debrecen £15,000 but rejected a protest from opponents Litex Lovech, who wanted the Hungarian side kicked out of the tournament for fielding an ineligible player.

Debrecen argued that they fielded Peter Mate in good faith as a substitute in Bulgaria when they were leading 4-1 on aggregate.

Uefa ruled that Debrecen had "no interest in fielding this player for the three last minutes of additional time, when the score was so clearly in its favour".
I accept that there's potentially a difference between fielding an 'ineligible' player and one who should be serving the first match of a European ban for a red card – ie Legia absolutely know that the guy shouldn't be on the pitch – but still... 6–1 up on aggregate with a couple of minutes to go?!

I'd also question why Uefa didn't spot that a suspended player was named in the match squad in the first place.

***

Edit: have just seen that Celtic were awarded a 3-0 walkover win in the second leg, rather than simply being awarded the tie. Which means the tie finished 4-4 on aggregate with Celtic winning on away goals. Tip for any team winning the first leg of a tie by four or more goals: get yourself disqualified from the second leg!

lol. Oh UEFA, you never cease to bemuse me.

Speaking of UEFA, todays draws have yielded

Napoli vs Bilbao (a cracker)
Besiktas vs Arsenal. (Ozil returns home)
KSC Lokeren OV vs Hull

Meanwhile TV5 looks set for Barca.

It won't just be UEFA, as FIFA's Suarez ban will get overturned later (well, at least for domestic games)

In other (slightly less important news), Reading became the 91st Football League club to make a signing yesterday (take that Exeter), and just like buses, after waiting over 310 days for one, two have come along at once.

Former Royal Simon Cox returns home, and we have also signed Jamie Mackie on a season long loan. Just a few more and we could have a complete ex-Nottm Forest XI...

So we've lost yet another Capitan. Shame he never found a way back into the starting XI. Always wanted him to partner Koscielny but alas no dice. Now we only have 2 CBs. One injury (or two) and its game over. Hopefully the BFG takes up the armband next.

I don't see City selling us Nastasic. Even more so with Wenger opening his mouth last week about Lampard's transatlantic flight to the Etihad.

But hey ho, theres only been a net spend of about £34m-ish so far. Should be plenty of money left to plug the gaping holes before Sept 1st.

One hopes...

In any case. Good luck to the Verminator. Cheers for the 6yrs.

I'm in the same boat...I'm starting a doctoral program in a month and just moved 750 miles on Tuesday into new digs....the previous tenants had been evicted so the place was a disaster. No internet till Tuesday either, so I'll miss today's match. :(

Celtic: it says something about the state of the SPL that Legia Warsaw would dominate it.

Columbus fell to Toronto yesterday, that's two games without a win now so we're back to normal.

Liverpool 4-0 Dortmund... A meaningless friendly, though the highlight was probably seeing Lovren and Manquillo play well at the back. Their services will be required this season if Liverpool are to finish in the top four again and have any sort of impact in the CL. Liverpool do need a striker but but they needed additional quality at the back even more.

Oh boy the competition is off to a good start. New record for the most yellow cards in one match.

ADO Den Haag 0-1 Feyenoord

This match will be remembered for the 13 yellow cards +1 red card.

The goal was scored in the last minute injury time.

Sounds a bit chippy in the Netherlands!

Meanwhile, the Community Shield belongs to Arsenal after a strong performance against a fairly disinterested Man City. 3-0 to the Gunners.

Dortmund name Hummels as their Kapitän which suggests he's going nowhere this window.

Speaking of Kapitans, Arteta has been handed the armband, and the BFG is his 1st Officer.

Would rather those roles were reversed tbh. But on the flip side it means Arteta (C) will be sold next season based on historical paradigm. ;)

The other big guns won their friendlies today...except for City who are still on vacation apparently.

A week left before the actual chaos officially begins.

But in the meantime, it appears we've acquired a new serving tray.

Hans-Joachim Watzke, the financial head of Dortmund renewed his contract. The stock shares of Dortmund increased by 8% today!

A little hope for our english pals for the women national team: while the A-team is in a rebuild phase from scratch, after they got a new coach last season and focusing on basic things (as I heard in a small report), the U20-team gives a reason to hope just a little bit for the future. Though I only saw the match against Mexico, one could see, that they have technically advanced, passes arrive and they have even an oversight about what is happening a bit further away than just around them. The offside, they only could play that, because they had just the seconds more that they needed. Mexico was kind of slower acting.
I guess they are now set just under the middle or at the middle, quality wise, but it is something they can build up on.

I am looking forward to the World Cup 2015, where we might see one or the other first time starter (in several teams) in the A-teams.

PS: U20 World Cup women - a nice goal by the superb French team https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSm9EpNqPDU

PPS: just watching Brazil-Germany (missed the matches against US and China, unfortunately) the latter plays a 4-4-1-1, contrary to their normal 4-2-3-1, but I don't know if that is because of Brazil. Brazil is already looking better then their men's team :D ;)
PPPS: Brazil 1:0 ahead by a corner 3min. before the end of first half. Germany gets a penalty in the last min., but shoots it against the goalpost. Both teams with about 3 chances each, Brazil with the better chances (two just set beside the goalpost), Germany shot two times in the arms of the brazilian goalkeeper.
Oh,... and Germany won 5:1... (2 last goals were made in 90+ time, while Brazil was down to ten due to a self-imposed injury and the defense fell apart. Germany first, US second in this group. 5:1 doesn't actually reflect the match really. Brazil also ran out of gas in the end.)

Brazil just can't seem to win a game these days.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have added an 8th signing to the summer spree by bringing in Alberto Moreno from Sevilla. On paper, the squad looks talented and deep. The media like to point out that Suarez has not been replaced, but Liverpool have traded him for what they hope is a more balanced squad. Now to see how well all these new players can function as a unit.

Will be tough to re-enter 1-4 - and not because Liverpool's weak, but because the competition is crazy. 5th place wouldn't be a shame but the media would tear them apart I think. Only worry I had would be Sturridge injured. Is Bony still in the talks? I rate him a lot. But him, Sturridge and Origi would be too much next year - with Lambert still lurking around. Haven't seen Ricky once - is he more than a solid PL-striker? How is he playing like? Typical box-player?

Clubs know S'oton have money and are desperate since the window is slowly shutting. They should prep themselves for serious milking.

On another note, the biggest issue Liverpool might have is that there won't be a 'surprise factor' anymore, teams will see them coming this time and Mourinho has also provided a blueprint on how to set up against them and get a result.

Losing Suarez also means they've lost that special variable that could get them out of tight situations i.e. stealing a 1-0 win away at Stoke.

Then again, United's existing squad is still there for the taking if you play your cards right. LvG or no LvG.

But you never know, football tends to make crazy things happen. It's definitely going to be a crazy season. For me it'll be a success if Mourinho fails to win the EPL and CL again.

Am I crazy to think they will play far less attacking in the big games unlike last year? Stronger defence and weaker attack - they won a couple of games start of last season 1:0 with Sturridge (excellent counter attacker!) iirc. Against mid-table/weaker teams they still can score plenty. Think they can play an excellent season as long as Sturridge isn't injured / out of form.

Rodgers has always said he won't change his style regardless of what happens and will continue playing attacking football.

Besides failing to do so will likely suit the opposition more since the match would likely result in a draw. Also, Liverpool don't have the players that can play a defensive game anyway.

I see. Wasn't talking about Chelsea/Athletico kind of super defensive play of course. Still curious to see if they really go all out attacking again or for a more balanced approach - did cost them eventually the league last year. I'm talking big games only anyway. Doubt they proceed far with that style in the CL, too. But yea, time will tell. Soon.

Didn't they buy a ton of new payers? They all can't defend? Can't believe that.

They can, and Lovren is a good addition. But can they stay disciplined and sustain an impenetrable rear-guard for 95mins (which you'll need against the big dogs)? time will tell.

I think the right flank of their defense is still suspect. Glen Johnson is not the answer, good going forward but caught out time and time again. And jury still out on Manquillo.

But we'll see. All speculation of course.
