The 2015-2016 Football Thread

Dont be so fast to judge.

On the contrary, everyone is calling Chelsea favorites. They have the most money and the biggest squad, and the most successful manager. They are the definition of overdogs. I fully expect them to win the league, make the CL semifinals and appear in one if not both of the cup finals.

Just finished Fiorentina vs Barca match, Fiorentina had two nice goals in their 2-1 win. Had a Guinness during the match, they are one of my favorite breweries because of how they treat their workers and the troops.

"Guinness is well known for their habit of standing by the troops in desperate times. When World War I broke out, Guinness promised every one of their workers who went off to war that he would have his job waiting for him when he came home. Guinness even paid half of the man’s salary to his family while he was away to help support them.

Guinness only grew this trend of support by the time the second World War broke out. Then, Guinness promised every British soldier that he would have a bottle of the famous dark stout for Christmas Day. So ambitious was that task that retirees came to the plant to help brew. Veterans then joined in, and finally other brewing companies sent workers over to help brew the Christmas beer.

It’s been called one of the greatest moments of unity in Irish history. Those that stayed with Guinness through the Great Depression were also granted on site medical and dental care (as well as massage therapy). There were gymnasiums, athletic leagues, reading rooms, and even scholarships available. For those that died in the war, the company paid their full pension, helped with funeral expenses, and even paid for their child’s education.

Oh, and on top of all of this, those who served in the war were granted two free pints a day."

i wanna make this post my sig. :)

Columbus Crew were thrashed 5-2 by upstarts Orlando over the weekend. It's been clear for a few weeks that our defense is struggling and we badly need a center back. The Crew suits and manager reacted swiftly in the transfer market...by buying mediocre journeyman striker Jake McInerny, an ill-tempered, dirty player who has been a figure of hate in Columbus on more than one occasion when playing for opposition teams in years past.

Given that he's not liked, has a barely adequate career strike rate, is now our third-best paid player, and our starting striker Kei Kamara is on a hot streak, what could go wrong?

Montreal sold him because Didier Drogba ate up all their salary cap space. We got him for nothing, so I suppose expectations are low. But he might fail to meet even those.

Columbus are still scoring goals, so the season could be rescued if coach Greg can find a way to keep the opposition from scoring.

Just finished watching Real Madrid vs Tottenham, RM handled Tottenham 2-0. Bayern Munich vs AC Milan next up in the Audio Cup.

I guess I spoke too soon - today Columbus signed center back Gaston Sauro from FC Basel. They also released one of our underperforming forwards, making the deal possible as we were at our roster limit. We needed a center back, a right back and possibly a forward. That's exactly what the Crew have bought in the last week, so I take back some of my grouchiness in my last post. Our new right back, Harrison Afful, started for Ghana against Germany in the '14 World Cup, so he's no mug either.

I'm still on the fence about new forward Jack McInerney, but he is only 22 - I think I can cut him some slack.

Things are looking up in Columbus. :)

Well stocked in midfield but if something were to happen to Coquelin then they're in real trouble.

WEdnesday have made so many moves this off season... i hope they pay off. i was very fond of stuart gray and i will miss him.

Not half as much as Van Gaal and Rodgers hope their signings pay off!

I'll miss Gray as well, I think he could have moved us forward with money to spend.

Our new guy has proved nothing, other than how to fail, so I'm not sure how that's an improvement in manager...

Strange transfer window so far for United. No improvement in defense. A serious downgrade at goalkeeper. Good thing the midfield has improved quite a bit; hopefully they can shield the defense better than they did last season.

Memphis had better be the business, or the attacking side will be pretty thin, as well. It will be nice to see Rooney stay up top, but he absolutely has to stay healthy.

I can't see how anyone could pick a squad besides Chelsea to win the league. They've got a couple of questions about depth in key positions, but they're just too talented and they've been together for a bit. That continuity will serve them well.

Arsenal has improved enough to move to second and possibly challenge Chelsea for top spot. I feel like City hasn't done enough to improve and key players like Company and Yaya aren't getting any younger. United should be third if they can finish up the transfer window on a positive note (e.g. a new keeper at minimum).

Chelsea have to be favorites, if only for the presence of Mou and the fact that their title-winning defense remains intact. They can still soak up pressure better than anyone else in the league, and apart from the departing De Gea Courtois is the best keeper in England.

However, Chelsea selling Cech to Arsenal could end up being the equivalent of Arsenal selling RVP -and the title -to Man Utd.

Man Utd losing de Gea is a big deal though; last season De Gea's performances saved a substantial number of points - without which they might have failed to make the top 4.

Chelsea is the obvious choice but both Chelsea and City have had subpar pre-seasons. Costa looks fragile and Remy looks out of it. Maybe they're still hungover.

United might yet still land Ramos but losing De Gea is massive. Not convinced about Schweini...old and injury prone but Schneiderlin is a big coup. Overall they've both strengthened (Schneiderlin, Darmian, Depay) and weakened (Di Maria, RVP, De Gea)

City's transfer activity has thus far reeked of desperation. Are they really stronger than last season? Maybe...since Delph gives energy and Sterling gives pace. Overall there's an aura of business as usual though. Same faces and similar problems

Liverpool have done what they can given their current status, but its yet another rebuild that needs acclimatisation time.

Arsenal still 2 short and 1 or 2 injuries away from disaster but its now obvious Wenger is playing the patient game by refusing to overspend and/or settle for hype. The team is also quite balanced right now and one needs to be careful about additions.

Also not really on the Cech hype. Would've taken Begovic or Lloris instead personally.

Everything seems at an impasse right now between the big clubs. Situation might play out as thus; Real accept Wenger's Benzema bid and use the money to prise De Gea. United use De Gea's money to land Pedro or Ramos.

i agree 100%

Man U won, that is a good way to start the season.

I have the Bournemouth vs Aston Villa match on now. Bournemouth fans have to be happy about being in the Premier League.
