Chelsea looked good on the pitch today, GoBlues!!!

Like I said, I'm not on the Cech hype and we're still 2 players short.

It's one match, Arsenal fans shouldn't toss out Cech's reputation just yet - he's still the best keeper they've had since Mad Jens. I would point the finger in another direction - where were the goals??? Sure, Cech made mistakes but if you can't score against West Ham at home you've got big problems. They should have at least drawn the match.

So far none of the top four contenders have been very convincing...Man Utd's top scorer is OG, Chelsea leaking two goals.

As long as Liverpool don't lose 6-1 today's match will represent an improvement on last season. I'm setting the bar low. ;)

EDIT: A dull game marching inexorably to a dull 0-0 result until Coutinho singlehandedly won it. Liverpool's defending was not great. Benteke wasn't given the ball in dangerous positions against a stout Stoke Defense.

I hate playing Stoke, they've been a boogeyman team for Liverpool for years now - great crowd noise int he Britannia, I have to say. I'll take a road win.

After one match Liverpool sit in 5th - just about where I predict they will finish.

I missed the cutoff too. Probably for the best - being a PhD student has stolen so much of my time I wouldn't be able to keep up. And I stink at it anyway. ;)

My Gunners-supporting office mate is so angry about the West Ham disaster he won't even talk football with me...I had to remind him that he chuckled when Gerrard slipped.

GoRedBulls!!! ....great game today

The Red Bulls and NYCFC might be new clubs, but the supporters have decided to bring the full European experience to their "rivalry" ASAP.

It's just embarrassing. There's really no tradition of this kind of behavior in American sports, so it comes across as artificial. "Hey, let's meet up at the gastropub for a pint of microbrew and a little soccer riot".

I've seen away supporters at Crew Stadium get hassled a bit if they get too mouthy, but violent incidents are isolated and uncommon. The only similar type of incident I can remember in Columbus happened when West Ham visited for a friendly, and it was a completely tame "brawl".

The thing about the West Ham defeat is that;

a) It was at home
b) It was a complete loss of 3pts
c) It was against an understrenght West Ham side and it was a West Ham side (no offence to Hammers)
d) It was a collectively abject performance
e) Deja vu

Mou only lost 3 matches last season, all of them away, and has only lost twice at SB...ever.

People say its only one match, no, its 3pts gone...in a season that looks set to be heavily contested from top to bottom.

Hopefully the effect is similar to or better than the Aston Villa one two seasons ago.

It's a terrible start, no doubt. Clubs with aspirations of the top four should be able to beat West Ham or at minimum avoid losing. That latter is how Mourinho wins titles, his entire approach to football is "safety first."

But it was still only game 1 of 38. 3 points lost, but the title is rarely lost by 3 points.

Hm. I recall a time in the mid 80s when a friend went with us to a concert in Philly wearing her Celtics jacket. While she wasn't beat up, she was barraged with comments some joking others not so much.

I'm not saying nobody ever gets roughed up over competing sports loyalties. But even in Philly the level of violence is nothing like the standard you see in parts of Europe. Yes, you can find yourself on the receiving end of a knuckle sandwich over sports matters. But it's still mild by comparison.

NBC Sports announced today that they've signed a 6-year extension to their exclusive rights to broadcast Newcastle's continued struggles Premier League football to the United States. I welcome the news, as I've been very happy with their coverage--especially since I can suffer through watch NUFC every week.

that is great news for football fans who watch EPL in the US like myself, football is growing rapidly here in the states. Even that new subscription app that Sony just took out called 'Playstation Vue' has NBCsN and shows all the EPL games

Are there any Bundesliga enthusiasts around? The new season starts on Friday. FC Bayern München vs. HSV.
I'm a huge FC Bayern fan and psyched that the wait is finally over and what better way than to start if off with my favorite club.
