Joel Matip transfers to Pool btw. Good signing, man really got talent. Flew mostly under the radar for the majority but good call. Not your AAA defender but still better than everybody you got right now. Need still at least one more defender I'd say though.

We need more talent in the defense, so I hope you are right. Klopp obviously has good knowledge of Bundesliga talent, so hopefully we take advantage of that. At this point, nearly any defender would be an upgrade. I'm hoping Clyne, Flanagan and Gomez realize their apparent potential in the next few seasons so that we don't have to rebuild the defense entirely from the transfer market.

Sakho has not shown the expected levels of consistency, Toure was only ever a stopgap, Lovren remains subpar and Skrtel has had injury problems (and remains a bit too inconsistent for my liking). Moreno is always going to be a little bit of a risk - good going forward but gets caught out of position and can be guilty of wild tackles. He'd be fine if the rest of the defense was solid. But it isn't.

There's certainly a good spirit within the squad. Bannan is playing some superb football in midfield and is clearly enjoying himself, claiming he's enjoying his football more than ever, and even Hooper looks like he actually cares again

That free kick from Bannan almost did the job too!

Mourinho's Chelsea would never be worried about taking a one goal deficit to Stamford Bridge, especially with an away goal; A characteristically dull and ruthlessly efficient 1-0 win on a Drogba Costa dive/penalty would see them through.

Can Hiddink do the same?

Rooney out for up to two months with ankle ligament damage.

There are only a dozen league matches left and Rooney looks set to miss most of them, as well as Europa League and England commitments. It's a bad time to get hurt.

EDIT: Lionel Messi scored his 300 and 301st La Liga goals today. It took him 334 matches to get there. Carlton Cole would have to play over 1,300 matches to reach that figure...

For reference (according to Wikipedia), Jimmy Greaves holds the English top flight goals record with 357 in 516 matches.

Dreadful stuff from Man Utd - they got an away goal, and will surely win the return fixture and progress (?), but it was a totally flat performance against an energetic but very limited opponent and but for some bad finishing and a couple great saves by their backup keeper they would have conceded at least one or two more goals.

Rooney out for six weeks, Fellaini with a rumored hamstring tear and De Gea sustaining an ankle injury in the warmup. Big injury woes for LVG.

Spurs should have lost, but Fiorentina's wretched finishing saved their blushes. Alli should have been given a straight red for kicking an opponent - he has to get a retrospective ban for that I would think. They look set to go through though.

And now Liverpool begin their tie with Augsburg - a tie they should, on paper, be able to win. But Liverpool have spent most of the season failing to beat teams they should, on paper, be able to beat. Klopp has most of his best attacking options available, so that is a small positive.

Augsburg has plenty of injured players too. They're are a fairly small club but one of hardest to overcome in the BL. Superb coach! He will have a serious career. Think he got coach of the year last season.

Interesting constellation!

Augsburg's most dangerous striker, Raul Bobadilla, has just gone off injured - looks like he pulled a hamstring.

This should take some pressure off Liverpool's defense, but so far it's been a cagey match.

Augsburg the better team so far.

They should have scored right at the end of the half, Liverpool got lucky there.

EDIT: Not a great result for Liverpool. Augsburg prevented Liverpool from getting an away goal, so a win at Anfield is probably a must.

My Man U friends will have to be patient.

So he can select a defence from Romero, Smalling...McNair, Love, Poole, Riley, and Tuanzebe.

I'll criticise LVG for the forward situation; not for those he let go, but for failing to bring in one more. He put a lot of faith in Rooney and the player let him down - Depay and Schneiderlin have also been major disappointments. With regard to matches, he should be shot for the line up v Arsenal. Still, the majority of media noise is laughable.

On the game; the midfield put in a poor performance at a time the defence need help. Nevertheless, better finishing and the home team would've conceded 1 or 2 more goals. 2-1 is slightly worse than 0-0, so a chance.

Cheers,
OW

OW, any idea why DiMaria was sent away? Still having a hard time imagining this one. Only personal reasons from LvG?
Buying Schweinsteiger was another head-shaker.

There seems to be a serious lack of balance in the squad.
