United has some slick passages of play, but yeah — it was just Brugge. They were also lucky to not be punished by a few defensive lapses by Daley Blind. Romero did a good job bailing him out, but Brugge's attackers were too indecisive.

Not just Hernandez' Terry-esque penalty miss, but he missed an absolute sitter a few minutes later. He's squandering an opportunity he probably shouldn't have to begin with.

Considering that Team USA are facing a do-or-die playoff with Mexico for a trip to the Confederations Cup, I couldn't be happier to see Hernandez misfiring so badly...partially because I'm not super confident USA will win it, even with Mexico's managerial situation. USA's defending has been abysmal of late.

:::International news update:::
Team Colombia has called up Fabian Castillo from FC Dallas for a friendly match against Peru on Sept. 8 at Red bulls arena in New york

  • Liverpool still defending like crap - and didn't get lucky this time with favorable calls.
  • Lovren is still poor, Skrtel had one of his occasional errors. Too much messing around with dangerous short passes & extra touches in our own area.
  • West Ham showed up playing elementary, meat-and-potatoes counterattacking tactics which completely befuddled Rogers.
  • The second yellow on Coutinho was very harsh.
  • Liverpool play a possession game, but then when attacking they either take potshots from distance or cross to a lonely Benteke in the box - need more attackers in the area.
  • Liverpool are Not Very Good. Given the last couple performances this was almost inevitable (bad call to send off Coutinho aside).

Bizarre start to the Premier League, exemplified by West Ham scoring a total of five unanswered goals at the Emirates and Anfield, whilst losing both their home fixtures against the might of Bournemouth and Leicester.

Life of James:: eat, sleep, score beautiful goals...repeat.

NYCFC 1-2 Columbus

Columbus rescue my day by getting a solid away win against Plastic FC in New York. Pirlo's marking on Columbus' first goal was laughable, allowing the shortest player on the field (our own Higuain) to bury a header.

On the downside, Columbus are about to become victims of their own recent success, with eight players (5 of whom are starters) being called up for the upcoming international break. Since MLS in its infinite wisdom schedules matches through international breaks, the Crew will be severely shorthanded for the September 6 match against Dallas.

Chelsea, LOL. No excuses, Jose.

Arsenal - got the kind of luck this week that Liverpool had previously been benefitting from. They struggled against 10-man Newcastle, and barely scraped a win.

At the moment only Man City are really convincing.

Anyone watched the Bundesliga yesterday?

Watched the conference (all matches) and later the match of the day, FC Bayern München vs. Bayer Leverkusen. And, boy!
That was the greatest match I've seen in months! The 3:0 was deeply flattering for Leverkusen - who were actually good - and in no way mirrors what we saw on the field...

Pep Guardiola has been getting a lot of flack lately. I think he's great and yesterday he demonstrated his flexibility. Every single player took on several roles, and did so perfectly. I've never understood why he would get criticized as heavily as he did. He's way underrated in my book. He changed tactics every so often and they all played along in perfect harmony. There wasn't a single threat for Manuel Neuer, even though we didn't even have a defender on the pit (except for the last few minutes with Dante). Not a single one. Only midfielders.

What a game. And Douglas Costa? Just... wow. Is there any position he cannot occupy and be brilliant at? Left or right winger, doesn't seem to matter to him one bit. We really needed that injection of vitality on our game. He's everything and more any football enthusiast could want. His game makes me giggle like a teenage girl at times. It's fun, it's smart, and it's blazingly fast. Too fast for most. A true nightmare for anyone. It's not possible to not hype the guy as he's delivered in every single match so far. It may not stay like this but we weren't short of weak laughs when we paid 30 million for him. Nobody thought he'd be even remotely worth it. For the BPL that amount might seem like peanuts, but over here, this is more than a respectable amount and easily the best transfer since Manuel Neuer. And with every match it feels like the 30M were nothing short of a true bargain.

Robben seems to be recovering well, too. He's shown great improvement last night. I hope he can steer clear from further injuries in the coming weeks. With Robben on the right, Costa on the left, and Müller being the capricious entity somewhere and everywhere in-between, we're all set and good to take on pretty much any team on the planet.

The only "weakness" that we're left with currently is our defense. Yesterday worked well but the last few matches did show that the defense is our achilles' heel that could potentially break our neck when confronted with the likes of Bale, Messi, Neymar Jr. and co. I'm positive that we can improve on that as well and if we do, then our chances to make our mark internationally are anything but slim. :)

Today's matches are also worth watching.

Borussia Dortmund vs. Hertha BSC and Werder Bremen vs. Borussia Mönchengladbach.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Dortmund and Bremen. The former has been on a roll as well. Tuchel has made one heck of a stellar deuce. I'm completely in awe with how well he's integrated into the team as a whole and his respectful handling of Klopp's work. He's great - always has been - and it'll be exciting to see where he'll take the team.

In the end though, only the Champions League title will count for Guardiola. Hopefully the race to the championship will be more exciting than in the last three years, with Wolfsburg and Dortmund doing well so far. Everything else is too early to predict.

Yeah, I have Sky Deutschland.

If you can't get it on your channels, there are few online streams that broadcast all Bundesliga matches live... I realize this isn't legal and I'm not going to name any but they're out there if you do a search and have no other way of viewing those matches.

FS1 must being some sort of limited coverage. no games on this weekend but we had 4 last weekend. 2 saturday, 2 sunday.

Good thing our 'rivals' lost they said (United mates), we will crush Swansea tomorrow they said, go 2nd they said.

At this rate, how long will it be before we see the first £100m player?

January is a good bet. Highly likely it'll be Pogba.

United looked ponderous and sloppy against a Swansea side that continues to play good football and defy expectations. Lots of wayward crosses and the goalkeeping shows what's in store for the post de Gea era.

A bad weekend for all the 'big' clubs save Man City.

Agree the goal keeping was bad for Man U.

Is it the counter attack, or has it become defending in general?

---

daneoni - not sure how your friends could think Swansea City away would be an easy game?

---

Manchester United - mixed games:

Good; Smalling - stepped up, Shaw - back to his form before injury, Darmian and Schneiderlin settling in well.

Up and down; Memphis.

Fat: Schweinsteiger.

Doesn't look up to it; Romero - does he have feet?

Worrying; Rooney's form - reluctant to use his weaker foot resulting in him losing the ball. Confidence? Also, LVG's subs yesterday; Fellaini was valid - Rooney won zip in the air, but Schweinsteiger and Memphis stay on?

Attack is the main problem but they wouldn't sell RVP and Hernandez then loan Januzaj to BvB without a couple coming in. Also seems Real Madrid have found a pay phone - Navas in?

Who will the supposed big clubs bring in before the deadline? Important for all except maybe Manchester City.

Cheers,
OW

Right now I'd say it's a general problem, albeit temporary due to the fact that except for Dante (who is rumored to leave) and Boateng we currently don't have any healthy defenders in our squad. That's led to the Kingsley Conan transfer though I've no idea how good he is or how he'll integrate into the team. Specifically, however, it's the counter attacks that are the main threat which is why we have so much difficulty playing teams who specialize in that, like Borussia Dortmund, like Borussia Mönchengladbach and a few others on the national level.

So United's big deadline day signing is going to be... that kid Martial from Monaco? Huh? And for how much?

Next Henry, eh? We'll see. Really need someone more developed right now, though. Rooney does not look up for it.

Will United get a new keeper before the window closes? Seems like Navas could come over from Real with De Gea finally going the other way. That would soften the blow a bit.
