And frankly, less fouling, too.

Yep! I said it before, these teams in central and South America have been dirty this entire tournament expect Brazil. They have been outmatched in a lot of games, and used the fouls to try to get back in. I don’t like that type of football at all.

Great match. Argentina never really got off the ground in this World Cup; despite having some world class players - and perhaps the world’s best player - they were ultimately a bit dysfunctional as a team. Once again, Argentina fails Messi rather than the other way around.

France found another gear today, but leaking three goals is still a bit worrisome. Still, they are serious contenders.

Two skilled but flawed teams + a knockout match = serious entertainment.

Half-time at the second match featuring the last sixteen, Uruguay and Portugal.

Uruguay - for whom the expression "difficult to defeat" could have been invented - lead Portugal by a goal to nil.

Ugh, devastating to see such a dirty cheat as Pepe score a goal.

Half the reason I am watching this world cup is to see the look on Ronnie's face when he gets knocked out. I'd rather it be sooner rather than later.

Afraid your hate for Ronaldo isn’t going to lead to anything. The greatest player in the world will continue. Sorry you can’t appreciate greatness.

You can hate Ronaldo the player and still like the person. I don't like him as a footballer, but I greatly admire his charitable work.

France played better hands down. argentina has always been a one man team. i still think mbappe is overrated, when he was in Monaco he didnt do much #MonacoFan

Booo also rooting for Uruguay or rather Portugal-actually against Ronaldo (well Pepe too given his behaviour).

However the football gods are immune to such pleas.
[doublepost=1530386473][/doublepost]GOOOALLL FOR URUGUAY!!

How can you not like the footballer? You can not like his pridefulness, but the as a player, if you can’t appreciate that, you can’t appreciate football.

Not speaking for Zenithal but something about him rubs me the wrong way. I wasn't aware of his charitable work however...

Oh, it's nothing personal, as I've mentioned here many times. He's just an absolute diva on the pitch, used to getting his way, and it's funny to watch him lose.

Uruguay are the more skillful side and I'd prefer to see them go though. Suarez is a big cheat too, no doubt about it, though he is actually a quite unselfish team player.

You can feel the Portugal equalizer coming. Uruguay are far from safe unless they score another. And with Cavani off the pitch that seems a little less likely.

You don’t watch enough football, or only care to see things the way you want to. Ronaldo, Suarez, Messi, Neymar, and the rest of the greats get what they want. Messi played the diva early in the game today. It happens with everyone. Your bias on here gets real old .

Third former champion heading home after Germany and Argentina, Portugal!

Thank you Uruguay, I won't be kept up with loads of Portuguese fans chanting, beeping their car horns etc. (There is a significant Portuguese immigrant population in French-speaking Switzerland).

A tight match but Uruguay were clinical, while Portugal were unable to make their advantage in possession count. Apart from the mistake that led to Pepe scoring Uruguay were solid in defense. No extra time, thankfully, and despite the presence of quite a few divers it was a reasonably clean match.

Cavani picked up an injury...hopefully it isn't serious.

Oh, and look at the expression on Ronnie's little face. Priceless. He can swap stories with Messi about the pitfalls of having a team be over-reliant on one player...

Exciting game. Glad Uruguay came out on top.

New to soccer...why do so many people dislike Ronaldo?

Perhaps.

But one of the lessons this World Cup should show is that hanging a team on a world class player will not guarantee progress in the kick out stages.

And yes: I'm with @Lord Blackadder here: I am not a fan of Ronaldo (and, since the tax stuff, not a fan of Messi either).

Great players, yes.

But, good riddance to them both and very good riddance to their respective teams that were over reliant on the genius of one person - an impossible burden to carry indefinitely.

If Portugal can force Uruguay to bunker, against France it could become very one-sided. Hopefully Uruguay don't retreat into their shell in the quarterfinal.

My opinion of Argentina's match in a nutshell: We have no defense.

From an outsider perspective, when looking at Argentina I see a national organization that is suffering from a lack of good leadership, and possibly corruption as well. This trickles down and results in a national team squad without a strong identity or confidence in their leadership, and perhaps either the wrong manager or one who is not given proper support. In this context, the players and fans turn to their superstar player, who, however good he is, can't do it all himself.

There is no question that Argentina's potential is a lot greater than what they've shown this summer. Will we see Messi one more time in (ugh) Qatar?

I am 100% with you. I would rather see a great team than one great player.
