So the USA isn't going to the WC ...

Qualification is still very possible, even likely. But for what? Having the team food poisoned by the Russians at the most corrupt World Cup we will ever see...(until Qatar, that is)?

Ok, conspiracy theories aside, USA were utter crap against a decent but still mediocre Costa Rican side. On this evidence we do not deserve to qualify.

It was painful to watch Pulisic get surrounded and beaten to a pulp by three Costa Rican players every time he tried to get near the ball, and Arena had no answer for it. The ref was a joke, but USA didn't need any help to lose tonight.

Embarrassing. US Soccer sells everyone on Klinsmann, then has a change of heart and dumps him for a coach they'd already fired once. We're going nowhere.

US WC viewing parties will include celebs like Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore, Michael Bradley, Bobby Wood. Bruce Arena probably won't get invited to too many though.

Arena is like the USA's Pulis or Big Sam - reliable and successful, but only able to succeed up to a certain point. The problem is, the USA has no Klopp, Mourinho, Guardiola or Ancelotti... So we really have nowhere else to go in terms of American managers.

Except for David Wagner. He's our only hope.

I'm sure there are more than a few Arsenal fans who'd happily send you Arsene Wegner.

Probably a few West Ham fans who'd send you Billic.

Personally I'd like him to be the guy that turns it round for us. Hopefully the international break gives us a chance to regroup etc.

International management is a very different beast though. Fewer matches and a much restricted talent pool, usually resulting in clearly flawed or unbalanced teams built around a small core of elite players or even a single individual. Because of that, and the fact that you're focused on knockout tournaments, tactics tend to be a bit more conservative and reactionary. Also different public pressures. You can't just sign players to solve problems.

Bilic had a pretty successful spell in charge of Croatia.

At least we managed to score...

Job vacancy coming up for Mr Wenger?

The thing about Arsenal is that they have shown zero interest in changing managers, the board cares only about ticket sales and sponsorship numbers, both of which are healthy.

Also Stan Kroenke's sports empire is filled with teams that were decent before he bought and destroyed them. Dark times for the gunners.

Who would they get though? They are not going to compete with the big clubs in the transfer window. So your looking for a top manager who's happy to be 4th or 5th.
Good luck with that one!

Sixth, if we are lucky, going on performances to date........

Though fourth or higher would be awfully nice, I must admit.

Arsenal's cachet is still pretty strong; while they might struggle to attract the very best, proven managerial talent (which, let's face it, is an extremely small group anyway), I'm sure there are dozens of experienced, skilled top-level managers out there who would jump at the chance to succeed Wenger.

Arsenal's key limitations with respect to replacing Wenger will be the greed and incompetence of the owner and the servility and complacency of the board - not a paucity of good managerial candidates.

***World cup qualifiers***

Colombia 1-1 brazil (full time) next 2 games are gonna be nail biters for Colombia

FYI: Falcao scored the goal (side header)

Hugely disappointing 1-1 draw for USA away in Honduras.

USA still have qualification in their own hands, and are still likely to qualify, but the team are playing like garbage at the moment.

"Are you England in disguise?"

The demographics of USA supporters have changed in the last ten years. I feel like expectations are higher, and a little of the humility has been lost. Americans are always aspirational, but it has become more hyper-patriotic entitlement than simple optimism. Or maybe I'm just projecting the political climate on to the supporters here...

There were some positive to take from the game - USA never stop working hard, even when they are playing like garbage - but I have the sense that the team just haven't gotten any better in the last ten years. There were flashes under Klinsmann, but he tinkered too much, irritated too many people and now we are back at square one with a 1990s vintage manager.

Klopp has come out and said Coutinho is mentally on-board, but is being left out of the squad to give him time to build fitness. It's plausible, given that he only played 20 mins or so in each of his outings for Brazil, but nobody really believes that his absence from the squad and from training was completely down to some mysterious back injury.

This is especially true given how Brazil's physio overcooked what should have been a routine lie by saying Coutinho's back injury was the result of stress, with clear implications as to where that stress was coming from...the negotiating table with Barca. He certainly looked fit enough when playing in a Brazil shirt...

Nevertheless, all will be forgiven if he comes back soon and plays well. Klopp has negotiated the situation with a clever (if still transparent) series of platitudes and white lies designed to make it clear to fans and the media that the player's head was turned and he'd better un-turn it quickly, after which every thing would be hunky-dory.

Liverpool could certainly use him, at least off the bench, for this weekend, but Klopp is either giving him a lesson or really does see a slight lack of fitness.

I think Liverpool have every chance of a win or draw at Man City, especially if they score early. Man City will probably control the midfield, but with Mané and Salah attacking the flanks I think there should be plenty of opportunities to get behind Pep's defense and cause big problems.

EDIT: Vincent Kompany picked up yet another injury while on international duty hammering Gibraltar 9-0, and will not play this weekend. Man City have spent a lot of money bulking up their back line, but they are always weaker without Kompany. Could be a factor against Liverpool.

Kompany missing is a big plus for Liverpool.
He is pure class.
But sadly his injuries will probably prevent him from achieving a lot of what he might have.

In other news seems like the mud slinging continues at West Ham over the on off signing of Carvalho from Sporting Lisburn.
If it's upheld we could face a transfer ban.

Just what we need!

Ah, remember the wonderful (well, I loved it and still do) Youssou N'Dour & Neneh Cherry song "7 Seconds"?

The saga of West Ham - come on, 14 seconds? - yes, it can be argued that it is ludicrous, and petty, and pedantic, nit-picking on the one hand, to insist on adherence to the precise deadline, but it is also strikingly unprofessional of West Ham - on the other hand - not to have been able to meet that deadline; after all, it is not as though the transfer window was anything other than an absurdly and dementedly excessively long exercise in Chinese water torture that stretched over the summer months.....

Funny enough I do recall that song. Although it was Manchild I was singing just yesterday.

As for West Ham I do hope we can finally get the ball rolling on Monday night. But with the way Huddersfield have started, you'd not bet on it!

Don't think it was a factor! That's a pretty comprehensive thumping.

Hard to see the title anywhere other than Manchester this year.
Just not 100% sure if it will be red or blue.
I said it earlier and I'll say it again. Think it will be a red year.

Oh, it was still a factor - the red card and flood of late goals conceal the fact that Man City's defending was pretty shaky in the first half. But in the end it did not matter.

I say it will be a blue year, though I speak from desire rather than conviction. Mourinho plays extremely boring football (aka the new "Manchester United Way") and is a massive jerk who I would love to see fail miserably, but he wins titles.

The Mané red card was deserved, though he had every right to go for the ball and it was clear that the manner of contact was accidental. Once down to ten the game was over. Klopp is constitutionally incapable of battening down the hatches so as soon as Mané saw red I turned off the game and went out to weed the garden.

Liverpool will always be exciting under Klopp, but without a more solid defense they will not challenge for the league title.

Pundits had been downplaying Pep's chances all week; I feel like England has really not taken to him and will always underestimate him (as crazy as that sounds). He's prim, publicly bland, and cerebral and intense in an introverted way - not the kind of persona journalists like. They want a good car-window interview or a spiteful, petulant rant. Or an English manager they can defend because he's English.

People also had strangely written off Aguero a bit; when I saw him on the team sheet I had a sinking feeling, He's a pure goalscorer, dangerous even if not fully fit.

Agree that I'd rather Mourino doesn't win. But still think it's likely.
As for the red being deserved I'll have to wait until MOTD tonight.

Excellent post, and yes, the red card was deserved.

If the title does go to Manchester, I would far prefer it to be the blue part of Manchester, for, I actually rather like Pep Guardiola, and very much like what he brings to the game; I like his methods, and his intense, controlled, introverted, cerebral character. And I detest José Mourinho,, the man, his values, his character and what he does to football.

Agree that I'd rather Mourino doesn't win. But still think it's likely.
