I long for the day when I can face into an Arsenal match without That Feeling in the pit of my stomach.

You know, the one that warns you of 'brittleness'.

Mind you, Wayne Rooney is not just playing for his boyhood club - the one he supported as a kid, and where he started his professional career - but also - doubtless - he has a point or two to prove, as well.

A very open game at Wembley, as I predicted.

Both teams created plenty of chances, but Liverpool threw the match away with chronic bad defending. I don't want to take away from Spurs' brilliance but every goal they scored came from a big mistake in the Liverpool defense.

At this moment in time, 5th or 6th place in the league is the best Liverpool can hope for. Liverpool are a brilliantly skillful and fun-to-watch team with a gigantic, unbelievably obvious weakness that everyone can exploit.

Yep our defence was useless again. We need to shore it up or get someone to start banging in enough goals that it doesn’t matter how many the opposition score ala the Suarez/Sturridge season

Yes, but if you have an unfortunate habit of leaking four on occasion, you are asking a lot of your strikers to compensate for that.

Having said that, while Spurs were brilliant, I'm not sure that the scoreline was entirely fair to Liverpool.

And I really like both managers.

With Suarez we used to blitz teams so that their heads were down within 15 mins. We’d maybe let 2 in fairly often but score 3.

We have a definite confidence problem in front of goal at the mo. Although Salah’s goal today was good he does tend to miss a lot

Liverpool have not been consistently defensively sound since the Benitez era. If we still had Suarez on the books Liverpool might be getting away with it a little more, but would still not be good enough for a title challenge. It is clear that Liverpool are just too soft at the back. It's true the forward line has been in a bit of slump lately (Maribor excepted), but the defense is still the bigger problem. Klopp continues to claim it is down to individual errors - if that is the case it means at least one defender must be acquired in January, and likely more in the summer. A new keeper is also probably going to be necessary.

As it stands, I think the best Liverpool can hope for this season is 5th place and a respectable showing in the CL knockout rounds; with this defense it is just not possible to expect seriously challenge for anything.

Spurs in the cup tonight.
Kane is being rested, which gives a bit of a chance.
Still think we will be lucky to get the win. But Billic could really do with the win.
Noble is back which should give us a boost.

The Carabao Cup.........

Blink, double take, further blink.

Actually, I had to look that up, as I wished to see what it meant - a dark, dawning suspicion that I should know it.

And yes, I duly discovered that, instead of yet another obscure European trophy that allows another entry spot by a hidden back door, it is the current name of the competition that used - once upon a distant time - to be known as The League Cup.

Back to the present, (is nothing sacred anymore in myth, memory or present reality? - That question is rhetorical) - and Spurs lead, one goal to nil.

Actually, a quick check revealed that they now lead 2-0.

Milk cup was a favourite name I recall!
Still my interest in the competition is likely to waiver after tonight. 2-0 down and we are not coming back. Will Billic get another game?

Watched the highlights. Seemed like we were two different teams, first half and second.

Hopefully we can take that moment into the weekend and beyond. A couple of back to back wins and we will be in our usual mid table position.

So, Columbus beat nouveau-rich Hubris FC - er Atlanta United FC - in the first round of the playoffs. They might claim 70,000 plus fans in the stadium, but their mouths have been writing checks their team simply could not cash last night.

First off, I'd like to say SCREW YOU to the following:

  1. Anthony Precourt for planning to move our club and clearly trying to ruin what may be our last-ever playoff run with a deviously ill-timed announcement of his nefarious intentions.
  2. Don Garber and other MLS suits for lying through their teeth about being "reluctant" to allow Columbus to be moved to a city that is not even on the shortlist of MLS expansion franchises. Absolute BS on so many levels, and just at the time when US Soccer needs to doing some serious soul-searching.
  3. Atlanta's plastic fans for their arrogance and willingness to mock a "small" soccer market that "deserves" to lose its club franchise before their club has even completed its first season in MLS (well, we just completed it for you). Wait till YOUR club is 23 years old and attendance is no-so-great. The shoe may very well be on the other foot then, folks.

I wasn't able to watch the match, but tonight I'm going to sit down and enjoy what is may be Columbus' last-ever playoff win. A bittersweet moment if ever there was one.

A. I love the Crew and want them to stay in COL. They are my MLS side. Even if we get a team here in Mid TN they will still be my team.

B. You should find a way to watch the match cos we got our asses kicked. Steffen was impressive but the goal keeper gods were clearly on our side during regulation. The Crew could have very easily lost that one 3-0 save for the fickleness of rounded goal posts, or at best lost 3-2. We hit the post once and had one called back, errantly, for being offside.

C. We get one more home playoff game... phew.
