As is about to become very clear, I am not a huge fan, or very knowledgeable about football, but I do have a question you, more knowledgeable types may be able to help with.

In international rugby (union), the referees are assisted by video replays when required. After the match is over, footage of the game is reviewed, and any fouls spotted are penalised, and offending players are unable to start in the next match.

Why don't they do this for football? When I do watch football, especially internationals, I repeatedly see players diving, rolling around on the floor in the hope of a penalty when no foul (or even contact) has been made.
Mostly because the FA (and presumably other countries) prefer football referring to be the same at all levels. At least that's the argument I've read.

I understand it's not your argument, but crikey that's weak. Especially when the amount of money in football is considered.

But thanks for the reply.

Liverpool look set to actually sign Salah shortly. Klopp is clearly looking to add pace to the squad, and if Salah continues in his current form it should be a good addition. Bringing in a player intended to improve the starting XI will certainly be a step towards easing fans' discomfort after the van Dijk fiasco.

There are still big holes to be filled. Center back, left back, forward...

They are starting to implement it, and it will eventually become general practice. The idea remains controversial.

The problem, as the NFL discovered years ago, is that video replay can still leave room for doubt and error. Unlike systems that use cameras and computers to determine whether the ball crosses the goal line (and which have a very small likelihood of error), video replay still requires a subjective assessment by a human. And sometimes the refs get it wrong, even after reviewing the video footage.

I agree there's better technology for goal line analysis. But for players rolling around on the floor pretending to have been fouled, dishonestly trying to get a penalty / free kick when they haven't been fouled / touched at all, it would help clean up football tremendously.

£75 million for Lukaku? Man Utd certainly know how to pay a premium!

In other news looks like Iheanacho will be heading to Leicester. West Ham have decided £25 million is too high.
Based on the Lukaku valuation that seams cheap!

Lukaku is a good striker, and given the uncontrolled state of transfer fee inflation, numbers are irrelevant now. All that matters is that a club want a player and can pay the fee, whatever it happens to be.

With all that being said, it's an insane fee.

Not a lot of transfer activity going on at the moment...even the clubs with big money seem to be waiting to make big moves.

Today they are talking about £95 Million after all the extras.
Insane it is.

Mourinho is looking for a battering ram - another Drogba.

As an aside, have to mention that I made it down to Minneapolis for Columbus' 1-0 away win at Minnesota United FC. The match was not a classic, with both teams missing a lot of players through injury/international duty, the temperature well into the mid 80s F (and much hotter in the sun), and playing on a college (gridiron) football field with the lines badly painted on. Still, it will probably be my only MLS match of the season so I enjoyed myself thoroughly (especially since we won).

Have long been impressed by Jermain Defoe as a player - he was one of the few (along with Jason Pickford) who ever so slightly redeemed Sunderland's dismal season last year with some seriously good performances.

But, I am also impressed by Jermian Defoe the human being; his touching and genuine friendship - which was utterly authentic, and charming, and warm, - with young Bradley Lowery (whose tragic - if inevitable - death has just been announced) was characteristic of the man, entirely unaffected, generous, and sweet and natural.

His tribute to Bradley Lowery is lovely, heart-warming and heart-breaking at once.

Given the arrogance, greed, bloated salaries and entitled narcissism of so many young men who are successful professional footballers, it is a pleasure to be able to acknowledge the actions - and character - of one of football's genuine gentlemen.

Anyway, I truly hope he is as successful and popular at Bournemouth as he was at Sunderland - it would be nice to see virtue - an underrated characteristic at times - amply rewarded.

I went off him a bit when he put in a transfer request the day after we were relegated thus ensuring we would receive less money for him.

But agree he has handled the tragedy of Bradley Lowery's ill health and tragic death with respect and compassion.

Years ago Mrs AFB used to work on the children's ward at the Royal Free. Many of the children there had cancer.
Celebrates used to visit from time to time.
Some would turn up announced with toys and a photographer in tow.

Others would come unannounced on their own and I'm sure made the children's day.
Many of them from Arsenal football club.

Ordinarily, I would have little time for "celebrities" and their relationships with children who are terminally ill, but this wasn't a ten-second photo shoot; Defoe genuinely kept in close touch with that poor kid, and did it with a real warmth, respect and compassion - bringing him to several matches as mascot, keeping in touch regularly, visiting, chatting - and clearly making a difference to how that kid was able to live his life.

And, Arsenal......well; I'm not terribly surprised. Pleased, but not too surprised.

One of the things I like about Mr Wenger is the integrity - and dignity - an self-respect - that seems to inform aspects of the core of his character. Those values will influence the wider atmosphere that is cultivated at a club.

Not entirely sure but I think this was before Wenger was there.

So, Lukaku to Man Utd with Rooney going the other way...it's a big loss for Everton, as Rooney is a shadow of his former self and I'm not sure what his best role is...poacher?

Lukau will now have a lot of pressure on him to perform in the world's most expensive football team. Mou as well - he must deliver on a league or European title this season - no excuses. He has outspent everyone, even the bottomless pit of wealth that is Man City.

It will be interesting to see how Rooney gets on. 15 goals? Fitness? I doubt it will work out how the Everton fans hope.
In other news we have failed to sign Arnautovic from Stoke for £15 million.
Think he's about the 6th striker we have failed to sign this summer.

If nothing else, Rooney's presence should add spice to the Merseyside derby.

Liverpool finally confirmed the signing of Solanke; not sure whether he is simply added depth in our roster of forwards, or if he replaces Danny Ings, who may or may not still be in Klopp's plans (he hasn't played since his bad knee injury 9 months ago).

The rumor mill is in full swing, but still not a lot of transfers to talk about. Managers always prefer to have as much pre-season prep time as possible, so it looks like most clubs are leaving it pretty late. Perhaps the crazy inflation is a factor, since nobody seems to know what a given player is worth any more. The same player could be worth 15 million in Germany, 30 million in England, or 50 million in China...

I think there is a big difference between worth and cost!

So many average players with ridicules price tags IMO.
My concern is for all the negotiating we are doing, nothing is coming to fruition.

To interested in a big name signing at a bargain price.

True, I somewhat sloppily use them interchangeably.

A player's worth is impossible to calculate until after the season has ended. A player's cost is an entirely speculative number based on the player's past performances and the buying club's financial resources.

We've reached the point where journeymen/squad players in the Premier League can now easily cost over £30 million, especially if the buying club is a "top-6" side.

I don't think Ronney is a replacement for Lukaku, they're certainly looking at other strikers, although I don't think whoever comes in, will replace Lukaku's goal tally.

Perhaps Rooney will sit behind the front man/2 or as you say, try and become the fox in the box

I bet Rooney's wages will more than replace Lukaku's!
Agree Everton need another striker. If they can get a decent one is another matter!
