I like the idea of Zidane taking a year off and hanging over Mourinho's head next season like some bald sword of Damocles, though I wonder if taking the France job after the World Cup would hold some appeal.

Arsene Wenger to Madrid?

Wouldn't that be a turn up for the books! But highly unlikely imo.

Yes, that is an intriguing and tempting thought.

though I wonder if taking the France job after the World Cup would hold some appeal.

Actually, that is exactly what could appeal to him; his sense of French patriotism is very strong.

Arsene Wenger is still shell shocked at his enforced resignation; in a recent interview, he admitted that he hadn't even cleared out his desk (although a successor had not yet been appointed at that time).

I can't see any circumstances which would persuade him to move to Madrid (or Madrid to wish to employ him).

hmmmm....

Not in my opinion.

And just because something "is the case" is no argument that it should continue "to be the case".

In the Premiership, I dislike Manchester United for a number of reasons - mainly Mr Mourinho - but also for their appalling arrogance the year they declined to compete for the FA Cup, believing the competition beneath them.

I didn’t say because it was the case in other sports that makes it right. I believe the complete opposite. I think there should be a bit more even plying field. Still would not stop the big teams from winning. I will say it again. Look at American sports.

I think that there are two elements to consider re Zidane's departure.

The first is that he was probably genuinely tired, or close to burn out.

The second, more importantly, is that he left on his own terms, and in his own time, which is what he had done as a player. Zidane jumped - of his own volition - long before anyone could start to think of pushing him.

I think another important factor is he wanted to go out on top. As a winner.

Nobody can argue with his track record in management.

Oh, absolutely; agreed that he wanted to go out as a winner, and depart on his terms.

With hindsight, I think it would have been far better for my revered Mr Wenger, if he, too, had chosen to depart last year immediately after Arsenal won the FA Cup.

Yes I agree. His reputation has not been added by another trophieless year.

But I suspect he felt he could win something again.

With hindsight, he could, and perhaps should, have contemplated leaving in either 2016, or 2017. Arsenal had managed to come second in the Premiership the year Leicester won the title (2016) - yes, I know other teams stuttered simultaneously, but Arsenal were able to capitalise on that - and won the FA Cup the following year in 2017. Either would have been a good departure time, for Mr Wenger, but I think he couldn't bear the thought of bringing it all to an end.

Unfortunately, the clear deficiencies in the team remained unaddressed, - not least defensively - and in terms of the brittleness of their attitude - and while he may have thought they could pull off another trophy, I think that their chances of winning anything were deteriorating by the week.

No one, I mean no one is throwing this story out there. Maybe had he stayed another year and Real weren’t competing for the La Liga title, maybe he would have been pushed. This however was Zidane’s choice. None of the players expect Bale are excited about this. Nor are the club. Think back to Pep. He left on his own terms too. The club didn’t ask him. Zidane is the same.

So I went to our, Nashville SC, Lamar Hunt US Open cup match vs the Colorado rapids last night.

Big fun and we beat them 2 nil !!

Tim Howard warmed up but did not play.

@Lord Blackadder did you see the Crew/Fire result.

MLS games are pretty good fun. The atmosphere is great. Here in Atlanta, we have Atl United and they are bigger then the Braves and the Falcons most of the time. It’s cool to see the love of a great game final be spread to the US. Problem is, we have a long way to go to get the quality of football up.

What you guys think of the new USMN coach?

That franchise took off!

Winning and attendance wise.

Yeah we exploded. The city I think was ready for football (soccer). Atlanta is such a mix bag of people from everywhere in the country, so most of them their favorite pro team in American sports isn’t Atlanta teams. Soccer on the other hand, they didn’t have a team, so they embraced Atl United.

I want to go to the All star game against Juve, but I am betting most of the starting 11 from Juve will be gone for the WC. I have never gotten the privilege of seeing a European team play live. Would love to.

What's another loss in a season of heartbreaking losses? Small potatoes at this point. At the moment, soccer ain't much fun for me. I get to watch my team MLS die a slow death, for one.

It's good to know that MLS can create "culture" and history" and a "fan base" out of whole cloth in new "markets". Apparently the idea that football club culture is a grassroots, organic phenomenon tied to a place has been a lie all along.
