I think Liverpool will be OK in the long term. Short term injuries are really biting them hard, and Mane looks like a real loss. VVD and Salah have both looked well off the pace, which is pretty alarming, but you'd expect they'll come good eventually.

Potter to Chelsea, taking his entire coaching staff with him. Really sucks for Brighton to have to build a whole new staff in a flash. They've named Adam Lallana as their interim manager.

The average Chelsea manager/coach has lasted, what, 2 years? Good for Potter for backing himself to make this leap in his career, but I'd have to say the odds are stacked against him. I'd wish him good luck, but he's at Chelsea now, so I can't honestly do that.

Didnt see that coming.

Graham Potter to Chelsea confirmed on 5 Year contract.
Really? it was obvious he'd take the job. First big club and straight into UCL with notorious backing. The ad practically writes itself.

Watched the CL highlights earlier. What were Liverpool thinking? Some of the worst defending I’ve ever seen. It’s shocking to think that the most expensive keeper and centre half in the country (at one time) can get the basics so wrong.
Gomez was particularly poor. Two goals were down to him.

It's a bad move for Potter from many angles. And, probably most importantly, a disaster for Brighton in the short term.

But in his shoes, offered a contract that guarantees financial independence for himself and his family for probably 2 generations, and at least a shot at the biggest trophies...I would be strongly tempted. He's no fool, I am sure he knows the club is a managerial meat grinder. But they have piles of cash and he will be very well-paid.

The main question is whether, when he is inevitably sacked, his longer-term career suffers. And, of course, I'm still angry that they are ruining Pulisic over there. He has never regained the form he showed in Germany - and that is all down to the Chelsea club culture IMO.

I agree - Potter is doing the right thing by himself and his family from a financial perspective.
What the emotional and professional toll ends up being? Who knows.

Brighton will suffer from his loss, no doubt. I'd say they'll need to move quickly and get an interim manager in that can steady the ship - Harry, Sam, etc. Then they need to look longer-term and appoint someone who embodies what they have become - a free-flowing footballing club that plays without fear. I am worried for them in the short term though.

Brighton will be okay. They just won’t reach the heights they might of this season. Shame as I was hoping they were going to have a year that stopped one of the greedy six getting into Europe.

As for Potter I understand his choice. The chance to manage a big club with resources Brighton can only dream of is a tempting one. If it all goes wrong, it’s not like he’ll be struggling for work or money.

PP for all of English football...

RIP QE ll

I do believe that "PPing" is a bit much but I also know that it is probably for the best due to the varying degrees of love/hate for the Royal Family.

I have read that the funeral for the Queen will likely occur by September 19, 2022 at latest. That could mean no Premier League games until October 1, 2022. The Premier League may end up shortening the season, especially with the World Cup break coming up in mid November to late December 2022.

Every sport has done something different. Rugby and cricket matches are going ahead today.
Personally I’d rather they had went ahead and just have a minutes silence.

Not really sure why they would shorten the season. You still have to play the 38 games, if anything they would extend it.

Seems a bit excessive.

At least I know ‘Pool won’t drop any points today.

Rugby and cricket don't require as many police as football matches, and there are more football matches over a weekend, so I can see why they wouldn't want to strain available resources. However, it should've been done in coordination between the Government and the FA. For such a highly pre-planned historic event, it feels like this was one forgotten detail.

There's going to be some wild fixture congestion in 2023 after the World Cup.

I’m not sure there is much police presence at an under 10’s kids match. But all football was cancelled which I find strange.

Very strange, agreed, not least as the fixtures are already quite congested (and the World Cup doth approach), while allowing people to gather in stadia would have - or, could have - served as a legitimate outlet for the expression of collective emotions such as grief.

Agreed. Our European game went ahead Thursday night. Had a minutes silence and wore black armbands. Not sure why we couldn’t have had the same on Saturday.

Agree completely.

It is perfectly possible to both show (a form of public) respect (a minute's silence, black armbands, etc) while allowing matches to continue to be played.

Unsurprising. The UK usually trends towards forced mourning when it comes to the monarch.

Things won't return to 'normal' until the 20th at the earliest.

Surely at this point the season should be extended by 2-3 weeks
FIFA / UEFA need to stop bloating the heck out of the football calendar with extra competitions and FIFA should never have allowed Russia to corruptly collude with Qatar on their respective WC bids, which practically guaranteed a massive schedule disruption during this cycle.

In a way, I almost hope Man City just run away with it this year by such a large margin that the wonky schedule is irrelevant.
