United look strong
or they can play good, but score goals when they need to vs any Euro team.
too bad this match vs Barça was not the Final

It may be a second tier competition, but that was a top drawer tie between United and Barca.

Fred pretty much summed it all up: horrendous first half, but instead of going into his shell he went out and had a transcendent second half. The winner was made out of team-wide tenacity and desire with some wonderful skill from Antony to finish it.

As much as I am most definitely NOT a fan of Man U, I have to say I can't help but feel some sense of schadenfreude when it comes to Barcelona.
I was a big fan of Barca for a long time (since the early 90's), but their obvious mismanagement, constant corruption and scandal involvement and their inability to play fairly has made me feel quite differently towards them of late.
Glad to see them knocked out.

Barca had me fooled once upon a time, with their beautiful football and UNICEF sponsorship. That seems an a lifetime ago now. They are a joke of a club, hawking dodgy NFTs to stay afloat and prostituting their heritage for a few bucks here and there to anyone willing to buy a piece of them.

A very good win for Manchester United - who were poor enough in the first half.

Actually, to my mind, ETH is doing an excellent job.

Friends of mine were taken in by Barca, too; one - his wife was a teacher of Spanish, and, some years ago, they both spent a year in Spain where - seduced by the what they thought was the sheer romance and style of Barca, they invested in a season's ticket.

I first became a fan in the days of "real" Ronaldo - we were travelling through Spain and spent a few days in Barcelona, where there were dolls and caricatures and mugs and T-shirts etc of this bald, buck-toothed young fella, who I hadn't honestly seen before.
Asked someone and they looked at me like I had asked who Einstein or Lincoln was.
We obviously decided to go have a look at the stadium and bought a shirt, as we loved the city and the rest was history.
I already knew about the team, but had little interest in them at the time. Until then, that was. But yes...what a sad state that once-proud club is in now. Much like the Old Lady. Seemingly constantly embroiled in some fresh controversy or other...

Well, the couple I have in mind, as I recall, they actually lived in Barcelona for a year, - and completely immersed themselves in the culture - loved the place, and faithfully, and passionately, attended every home game - treating themselves to excellent season holder's tickets - for the season/year that they lived there.

And yes, the romance was attractive (not Franco, not Madrid, legacy of Johan Cruyff, style and elegance and culture, etc, etc) and seductive, and....well....

Anyway.

Sad to see, this decline, (a decline that is not confined to matters on the field of play), yes.

At present, we (Arsenal) are dominating against Leicester, and have just scored to lead by a goal to nil.
Arsenal (with two disallowed goals, offside the cause) still lead Leicester, by a goal to nil, but instead of dominating, which is what they managed to do for most of the match, unfortunately, are now sitting back, which is foolish.

We have dominated against Forest. Now showing in the 4-0 score line. What a relief!
I can well imagine.

That is an excellent victory; nice to see such domination translated successfully into goals scored.

Everton's lack of a a striker still glaringly apparent.

City and Arsenal return to normal. Trossard and Jorginho looking like shrewd transfers.

Leeds and West Ham take 3 massive points.

Agree that both Trossard and Jorginho were excellent buys.

A good win today, the sort of unspectacular but necessary win that teams with aspirations towards winning titles must be able to grind out.

Given the day (or date) of today, I was also very pleased to see that Zinchenko was honoured, for, he was wearing the captain's armband this afternoon.

Same for THE MASSIVE WEDNESDAY but we are finally seeing a little light at the end of the League 1 tunnel...

Newcastle played pretty well, but United defended better and took their chances. Casemiro, man — what a player. What a winner.

Oh silverware, how I missed you.

An excellent victory for Eric Ten Hag and Manchester United, and Casemiro was outstanding.

Today's edition of The Guardian (well, Observer) - their running match commentary invited comments from readers - sums up my feelings about the contest rather well: “Is this a final with highly conflicting emotions as a neutral” wonders Ian in Portugal. “For context, I’m a Spurs fan and I dislike Manchester United so much. The entitlement is unbearable for a club run with incompetence. But Newcastle, a team you could once get behind because of the fervour of the fans, are much worse.

“A sportswashing outfit on an imminent path to glory (I feel the same about Man City, PSG, etc). Which makes this, all in all, a quite unenjoyable experience. But I’m up for Man Utd as at least, as far as I know, they don’t sit on the wrong side of human rights history.”

However, I was glad that the game was not a disaster for Loris Karius, who found himself - as third choice goal-keeper, playing between the sticks for Newcastle United, and I would have liked to have seen some sort of redemption arc take place.

Interesting that the man who got himself sent off in a game bringing an instant 3 match ban which allowed him to be rested and come out blazing for the EFL Cup is the player that many are raving about.
