There is no harm in trying, but it is always prudent to mention that it no longer works 100%.

Here's how I did it back in August-ish...

1. Had a friend with an old unlocked Motorola Razr give me the IMEI for the phone. I never actually had the phone.

2. Called AT&T customer service, told her I wanted to temporarily switch the Razr (fed her a story about my dad wanting to try the iPhone 4 before buying it for himself) and that I had a microsim card adapter (no need to get a new sim card from AT&T store).

3. Also noted that I like to check sports scores so please activate a data plan on the Razr (which is an unlimited plan).

4. She made the changes on my account. I turned off the iPhone for about 15 minutes and turned it back on. At first data didn't work but within an hour I had a text message saying that I was automatically switched to an equivalent unlimited data plan for the iPhone.

Again, YMMV, but this worked for me and I didn't even have to buy an old iPhone 2G from eBay.

Good luck.

I've been keeping up with another guy using trying to use the 2g loop hole and as of this morning he said it is still working :) he tried it last night and got the text this morning.

Trying this now, just activated my 2G about an hour ago. Should I wait until my ATT account either through mywireless or online shows that i have been changed to the 2G and have unlimited data or just pop the sim back in my iphone4? Thanks for the help as always!

Ive got a question too. Will I be charged for overages on txts when I try this because I have over 2000? Or will my moms unlimited family txts keep me covered?

I believe what he meant is that texts coming FROM AT&T (official communications) do not count toward your allotment/overages.

Thanks God I kept my unlimitted data plan on my iPhone. I often worry though that when the 4G/HSPA+ network goes live AT&T will force us to remove our current "grandfathered" unlimitted data plans.

So it has been about 12+ hours since i activated my 2G to replace my iPhone4 and everything still says I am on the 2GB plan. Should I keep using the 2G until I see something (either calling *DATA#, mywireless program or my online ATT account) say unlimited for $20? Or should I just put the sim back in my iPhone4 and wait and see if I get the texts at some point? Thanks for the help!

Just did this today. I tried to activate over itunes but it didnt take, got the email saying my activation was canceled for the 2g iphone unlimited plan. So i called and told them that I wanted to activate it and they did it right away. Checked my account and I am already on the $30 unlimited data plan for 3G guess she did it that way cause I already had unlimited txt from the family plan i am under. Doesn't matter though I have unlimited data again!!

I would recommend you call AT&T they had to take down my IMEI number and get manager approval in order to get it back.

That's what I was thinking, thanks for letting me know it worked for you! I'll give a shot shortly

Was told they don't have unlimited plans anymore and itunes is wrong. Guess I'll have to try another rep later

The 2G loophole does still work. I just bought an iPhone 4 in Dec (refurb), and was able to take my Unlimited Plan with me. I then activated the iPhone EDGE for my father, and he gets unlimited data. I then verified with a rep after getting a 3rd phone activated that yes, if my dad gets new iPhone, at any time, he would automatically get the $30 unlimited plan, regardless of how long he was using the iPhone EDGE.
