i'm just going to say this.

If the No contract price would have been $299-$399. the 5C would be dominating

Absolutely agree with OP. If the 5C didn't exist the 5 would still be sold in its place and would look and feel almost exactly the same as the 5S to the average customer. Switching the body to plastic creates a larger gap between the first and second tiers of phone quality. It makes the 5S look better.

I believe the current sales numbers reflect this.

IMHO, the 5C is perfect for a kid, or somebody who does need the latest and greatest gadgets (that are in the 5S)

Many people will buy the 5C to save that $100. Think about it, if you are a father and your teenage kid is bugging you for an upgrade on their iphone X, are you going to pick the top of the line model for $200, or the model at half the price $99.

Agreed. I think the 5C is targeted at young kids and those who are looking to save some money up front.

Yeah, no.
Many people I've talked to hate the look of the 5/5s and would rather buy a phone they love rather than whichever has the latest tech.

I'm 20 and planned on buying the silver/white 5s. But when I saw the 5c in person and held it in my hand, I ended up buying the white 5c and couldn't be happier. The phone feels more comfortable than the 5s and isn't so industrial looking plus I hate cases and I feel the 5c doesn't require one. It's less "slippery" to hold than the 5s. No it doesn't have the fingerprint scanner, which I admit, I wish it did!! But the camera is fine, everyone thought the 5 camera was great last year so I'm fine with the 5c.

No, the 5c exists because when iPhone upgrades to a 4.3-4.5 inch screen with the 6, those who still want their 4 inch screen can buy the C model.

the 5S is only outselling the 5C because the market the 5C is aimed towards generally does not buy iPhones on launch date. They buy iPhones when their contracts run out and want a new phone.

Most early adopters have 2 year contracts that generally expire around the same time as releases since most of us bought our first iPhones during that same time.

The 5C exists because it costs Apple much less than they wanted to pay for the glass and aluminum case. This way they get to put a cheaper case on it (albeit still nice) expand their market to the 'pretty colors' consumer who gets it at "half the price of the 5S" with the completely "new" iPhone 5C. The best part for Apple - they don't even mark it down. The usual "last years phone" price for a "new" phone - Awesome! Obviously it's a 5 with a manufacturing shortcut but the 'pretty colors' consumers generally don't know or care and dammit they want iPhones.

I was really hoping the 5C would be, well, almost what it is but with somewhat diminished specs to facilitate a tolerable non-contract price on an IOS device. I'm tired of paying $80 a month for cell service. After I saw the 5C non-contract price I bought a Nexus 4 for $250 and I love it. Spec wise it's actually more comparable to the 5S than the 5C and that's for an 11 month old Android phone (what gives Apple?). That AND the Nexus 7 (which blows the iPad Mini out of the water in most categories) actually cost me less ($520) than just an iPhone 5C $550 would. The iPhone 5C is not nearly $300 more phone than the Nexus 4. Not even close.

I think the 5C is a bit of an insult to the informed consumer.

I just bought the 5C as a gift for someone coming from a feature phone. The 5S would be overkill (and better than MINE:)

I wish it had been cheaper, obviously, more in line with guesses and wishes.

By buying it outright, the giftee doesn't have to pay the extra subsidy with TMobile.

As long as I remain, myself, with ATT, it doesn't really pay to buy outright. I can't save the $20/month once my contract ends. The gophone plans would save me under $10/month, so wouldn't make up for the subsidy. Unless I went prepaid with MVNO.
