To restore to iOS8, just download the IPSW (links can be found on google or here)

Hold down Option and select "Update" in iTunes

Point to the IPSW (12A365 for iPhone 6, 12A366 for iPhone 6+)

Restore

Enjoy.

No need to restore your data. Easy fix in 10 minutes (for faster phones)

I began reading there were issues after I started downloading it. I shut off wifi with 5 mins to go in download to stop it. Any ideas how to kill the download so I can use wifi again?

No need to. It doesn't install automatically, at least it didn't for me.

Hmmm, I turned wifi back on and it's still downloading. If they pulled it, I wonder what I'm downloading...
Oh, it'll finish downloading, it just won't install until you press the Install button and then enter your device passcode.

CONFIRMED! My AT&T 6 now has service after downloading the correct firmware and alt-restoring it in iTunes.

Correct I found after reading. Once it downloads you can do this...

Settings -> General -> Usage -> Manage Storage -> then look for the iOS update and delete it

Can confirm. Did the Shift+Check for Update, selected the downloaded 8.0 IPSW and it did an 'upgrade' from 8.0.1 to 8.0. Took about 10 minutes and cell and touch ID both working fine. Didn't have to restore.
