I nearly stopped watching Youtube because of it. The beancounters at that company are so damn greedy anymore. They don't make the content, they simply host it.

The frequency of ads, and the price of Premium annoy me, but I also recognize there's a massive cost associated with globally hosting free video for anyone. I'm uploading an 80GB video game playthrough right now, which will then be transcoded into about a dozen other videos based on different formats and resolutions, and just be there until YouTube ever shuts down.

While I do get that (and I usually don't use ad blockers) YouTube is seriously out of line anymore. The amount of ads (and length of ads) is ridiculous. There was one ad that was over an hour run time. Most ads fall between 15 seconds to 5 minutes but 5 minutes is ridiculous for an ad.

Sure there's the skip button but if I'm listening during a workout, or cooking, or doing something else where I can't hit skip right away it's exhausting.

My wealthy friend send me YouTube links all the time for classical music things to watch... I rarely if ever watch YouTube anymore, I barely watch any tv in general. They are too cheap to pay for apple music, YouTube premium or anything ike that yet live in a giant mansion with plaid teslas and a maid... they will watch the ads forever to avoid that $15 or whatever 😂

Yes, the longer than 30 second ads are a huge annoyance, especially if I'm in the shower with the iPad on the counter, or doing dishes and my hands are wet, so I can't hit the skip button. Completely agree there.

I watch YouTube on my iMac and I have Wipr and Vinegar extensions installed. Not sure which one is blocking the ads but other than the in-video stuff from the creators I don't see any ads. It's great to stick it to the man.

Glad I found this thread.
About 12-18 months ago I noticed ads becoming more frequent, non skippable 15-20 sec ads at the start of videos

I’d say every 2nd or 3rd video had this, plus a bunch of 5 second ads or skippable ads

About 3 months ago, almost every video had ads at the start and during

As of last night, it was virtually every video but more frustratingly there was an ad every 1 min 20 sec. Some of them were non skippable 15 sec ads.

It totally destroyed any enjoyment in the content. The video just can’t flow with such heavy interruptions.

To make it worse it’s the same rubbish ads every time virtually.

I honestly lost my **** with it last night. I really hope this backfires on them.

The greed is out of control. Don’t be evil they say. Well they must have redefined what evil is.

They are pushing you to the Premium tier as has been mentioned earlier. I pay $11.99 a month which is reasonable if you watch YouTube on any more than an occasional basis. The free ad. based version it totally unwatchable, but someone has to fund the service and if you find it has value, you should pay and if it has no value put up with the advertising. I never understand why people expect services like this to be free, some one has to pay.

The embedded promotions that some YouTube presenters use are easily skipped and do not cause an interruption in the flow to the presentation as they are integrated into the edit. However the YouTube ads are invasive and very badly integrated into the presentation making them intrusive and totally unacceptable. In general I will not pay for a service to deliver advertising to my house, but I cannot avoid some of the promotions that presenters now use. If this increases to the point that it is a problem, I will stop watching and YouTube will lose a customer. At the moment it is barely acceptable (for example: Square Space promotions on the Northrup photo channel is getting close to me stopping watching them completely).

The price is crazy, its as expensive if not more expensive than streaming services like Netflix and Disney+ that have full DV Atmos / 4K content from full production teams and professional actors.

Youtube is not even in the same league. Its free content, of people walking around with phones, collage videos of animals and people doing stupid stuff and a bunch of at home review content.

It's because they bundle YouTube Music in with it for "value," or some garbage reason. I would probably pay up to $4.99 for ad-free YouTube without the Music access.

That’s basically what I pay for YouTube Premium here in México. For me, it’s worth it, but the search function in the Apple TV app is complete and utter GARBAGE! I can’t believe how they could’ve made it so bad, and it’s not only for YouTube, but in general the search function in the ATV is extremely primitive.

The ads have gotten so bad I've just automatically stopped using YouTube on any device where I can't completely block them out.

I have a host of adblockers on my Mac and a sideloaded YouTube IPA running on my iPhone. Haven't seen a single YouTube ad in many years and I'm quite ok with that.

Totally agree - I can't stomach $11.99/mo just to remove ads. $4.99 feels more reasonable for that. OR bundle it into YouTube TV! I can't believe that YouTube TV is $64.99/mo and doesn't include YouTube premium.

I watch youtube more than any other streaming service so the $23 for premium family (that covers six individual users) is probably the best entertainment money I spend every month. As far as the creator inserted ads, most of them have some sort of witty intro, keep it short, and is usually relevant to the channel. And if it isn't - skip 10 seconds until you are past it.

$10/mo for content shouldn't be out of reach for someone that has $6000 worth of the latest Apple hardware in their bio.
I agree it is expensive. However we all watch YouTube in my house. I have the family plan so share with my husband and brother in law. My husband uses an android phone so he can use YouTube music. There really is so much content on YouTube. Not just tech. I watch a lot of documentaries on YouTube, true crime, historical. Lots of different things. I think it’s worth it. There were/are other benefits apart from ad free. On iOS it was the only way to get pip and background audio playback. You can also download videos for offline usage.

Some people are just so cheap. Even when they can afford something they just don’t and then they feel as though they are superior to those who are ‘silly’ enough to pay for it 🤣

Use a VPN to sign up to Premium. My £2.50 a month YouTube Premium is lovely.
That’s really expensive where you ”live”… I happen to, in certain circumstances, ”live” in a nice warm place that costs me £1.25 a month. It’s the best money I’ve ever spent for the past 2 or so years, I couldn’t imagine using YouTube without it.

When they show ads, I turn my face away. I mentally block my ears. They thought they could gain something forcing us to attend to those ads. I don’t buy any product advertised on youtube because they piss me off. Too bad that evil company bought youtube.

Why even put yourself through either having to put up with the ads or having to put yourself that out of the way over what would be roughly $1.50 a month?

I subscribed it for a family member. Otherwise she would bother me even more. We have different interests. I don’t want youtube to mess up recommended lists. Anybody knows how to logon to the same account by different family members yet not having recommended videos mixed up?

The family plan would cost the equivalent of $2.29. The family plan keeps all your video history and recommendations separate.

Thanks. Wasn't aware of the family plan. So basically I need to pay twice/month.
