Does a speaker really matter? Unless you are talking/facetiming...Watching videos on speaker?

Realistically, if you are in public, you probably should be leveraging headphones. I know, there are plenty of people who make calls/watch videos/Facetime in Public on speaker. Don't get me started on that!

It's a phone of many compromises. Not for most people. Pro and Pro Max shipping in early- to mid-October after a few hours of preorders, but Air is still available for a Saturday pickup or delivery next week. Unsure if either they made a ton of them because they overestimated demand or it's just that no one is ordering it.
Im also hearing that the Pros are thicker and heavier than the 16 Pros! That then to me is also a phone of compromise.

The bulk of these reviews basically reinforce the idea that for $100 more, the vast majority of people would or should get the 17 Pro to avoid compromises. If thickness and weight are extremely concerning to you, then get the Air.

Looks like Apple was optimistic when they set the production mix for Air at 10% compared to 25% for Pro and 40% Pro Max.

What the reviews that I've viewed seem to miss is that each of the phones is aimed at a different user and use case. I wonder which reviewer will take a more balanced, nuanced, and realistic approach rather than stress testing each version as if your a hardcore gamer in relation to benchmarks.

While I'm getting the Pro I still think that I could easily like the Air as I'd use it with airpods and don't game. The pro has it this upgrade but with Carbon Lithium battery tech and a 2nd camera in a couple of versions on it may well be a real contender.

If speaker quality is a deal breaker for you in CELL PHONE you may need to reassess your priorities in life...
If you care that much about the preferences of strangers on the internet to make a statement like this, you may need to reassess your priorities in life...

Some people will prefer a thin phone and won't mind the speaker compromise. That's fine.

Some people won't care enough about how thin the phone is and prefer better speakers (and cameras and thermals). I fall into this group. I use speakerphone regularly and listen to music/podcasts in the shower and in the kitchen. I play mobile games with audio and voice chat. Sometimes people are... different.

If Samsung released a garbage speaker it'd be a field day around here.

When Apple does it ... "I don't really mind a crap mono speaker in the earpiece!"

😂

Can't make this stuff up.
The double standard with deference to whatever Apple does is really rather hilarious.

Sort of hilariously predictable.

I think it's more like "I can take the single speaker as a compromise because I want this form factor and design."

Here's a direct speaker comparison, it id definitely quieter but they all sound terrible. It's plenty for a FaceTime call or some light social media watching which is all it would ever be used for for me.
Yeah, even though this is obvious not the most scientific test, I’ve listened over and over and over again for the last couple minutes.
There is a difference, but it’s barely a difference. All of the phones sound like they have tinny phone speakers, the Air just sounds slightly quieter.
Reading the reactions, you would’ve thought they were going back to the mono speakers from the old iPod touches, but it’s definitely not that.
It sounds… like a phone speaker. For basic video watching, TikTok scrolling and podcasts (which are already usually mono anyway) it will get the job done.

that's definitely not true. reviewers have praised improved speaker quality several times before.

Im not saying you're wrong, maybe they have. But I don't remember this much of an emphasis being on the speaker quality of an iPhone. I certainly don't remember it being such an issue that it could be described as a deal killer for somebody who was considering making a purchase.

Well, according to this review, after a 20 minutes graphic intensive testing, the A19 Pro on the iPhone Air is worse than the A19, and that's after a couple of tests, one of them inside a fridge to keep the Air as cool as possible:

Sounds to me like the A19 Pro version used in the Air is powered down to assist with battery life or something?. Definitely gimmicky.
It’s not powered down. It’s a binned chip and its thermals are bad compared to the Pro phones.

Imagine if Samsung posters told others to use earbuds as a solution to everything.

We’re seeing classic psyc defensive mechanisms like “it doesn’t matter anyway” (minimization) to “you shouldn’t use speakers anyway” (justification and superiority). They’ve taken the whole Steve Jobs thing about holding it wrong to whole another level.

Or maybe people just don't care enough about the speaker quality. If it's a passable loudspeaker and plays frivolous video when doomscrolling social media tat, it's good enough for me.

I'll take the ultra thin, premium design which feels like the iPod nano and iPhone X had a baby and just use my AirPods for audio I care about listening to properly.

Probably because mono speaker hasn’t been a thing since the iPhone 6 era?

If Samsung released a garbage speaker, no one would care because no one picks through the details of a Samsung phone with a fine tooth comb the same way they do apples.
A couple years ago, Samsung literally downgraded, yes, downgraded, the amount of RAM in one of the galaxy ultra phones.
I think I saw, one comment about it? Maybe two?
If Apple decreased the amount of RAM in the new iPhones, there would literally be three weeks of articles about it.
