I think the reason some people put their Mac gear in their signatures is so people will have some idea of the gear they have to judge their ability to provide relevant answers. At least for me, I think that's part of the reason. Some of it might be bragging about gear people are particularly happy with. Which brings me to the point of this thread.

If I owned no Apple Gear at all, what would I buy first. Since I have so much Apple gear lying around, I know from experience which I like best so I'll pick the thing I'm most happy with. If I knew nothing up front, I might pick something else. I pick my white Macbook. It's getting a little tired and I'm very tempted by the new MBP models, but I don't need one of them. And that's what I like best about my tired old stained white Macbook. It works well enough that I can replace it when I darn well please, even if that time doesn't come for a few years down the road. So if I owned no Apple gear at all, I'd start with a Macbook, either base, air or pro. And I think I'd be most tempted by the air.

What I did buy when I owned no Apple gear was a Mac Mini. No, I'm not counting all the iPods we had rolling around. I wouldn't say they affected my decision to get a Mac. I was most affected by my pleasant experience with Linux and when I learned that OS X had Unix underneath and I could grab a Mac for a mere $600 (at the time) I jumped on it and I haven't looked back. I later replaced all the computers in the house with Macs and I spend so little time repairing broken things, it's not even funny.

You come into some money, you do not have an apple product of any kind but have substitutes made by other companies (meaning you have some rudimentary mp3 player, a basic laptop, etc)...

What apple product would you go out and buy?

MAC PRO!!!!

Seriously. I'm about dying to replace my aging PowerMac G5 (hey, it was a fantastic replacement for my even older PowerMac G4.. and I got it almost free ^_^)

I loooove my desktops.

I've been an Apple user for about 9 years now which started with iPods then came the switch to macs (iBook G3, PowerBook G4, and the MacBook Pro in my sig below) and I'd have to say the first thing anyone getting into Apple for the long haul needs is a Mac. They're all excellent, I sound like such a fanboy I know, but if I came into money there is NO question what brand of computer I'm buying with all my past luck with them. I could by all means replace this computer (I've had it 3+ years), but it still does everything I need it to and seems no slower than my gf's 13" MBP at the things I do so until then, it's my main computer.

Recommended first purchase: MacBook Pro
Next (or first if you already have a mac): iPhone

iPad.

I am not exaggerating when I say that it changed my computing life.

My desktop usage has decreased 90%

If it were not for my p2p usage & farmville, i doubt if I would use my mac mini. My mac mini now runs like a media server.

I would have to say, for me, it has to be my Laptop. Its my jukebox on the road, my movie theater in the air, and my graphics machine at work when I'm not on my desktop.

My Mac Pro, on the other hand, is my reliable and trusty workhorse. My iPod is wired into my tC, and is always on. :D

If it were me, I would go out and get a nice Mac Pro. I would use it to start a home recording studio. If not the Mac Pro, I would go for the 27" iMac instead.

Most satisfaction?

Ipod Shuffle refurb I bought 2 years ago. Never opened it the 1st year and gave it to brother for xmas present or part of his xmas present.

A few months later when my Mom was in town she gave it back to me. My brother returned his xmas present through my Mom. No explanation. :D

Yet he opened the plastic so I couldn't sell it as new. Great. Whatever.

Anyway I finally had an excuse to try it out. And....

I love the simplicity. I like that there are volume buttons. Something my iPod Nano doesn't have. I love the clip and light weight.

I put a few podcasts at the beginning so I can quickly get to them. And music after and play it randomly. At least that's what I did today.

I like the value too.

Before I got an iPod I thought the click wheel was ingenious. I still think think its pretty kool.

But the reality for me was I didn't use the clickwheel a whole lot to scroll through stuff. I mostly shuffled music and listened to a few podcasts. There's alot of functions on the ipod that I never really used with any regularity. timers, alarms, notes, games, blah blah blah.

And the clickwheel can be a touchy son of a gun.

so the shuffle hit home.

The past week I did rediscover my Shuffle for the 2nd time and just started using it with one ear bud in my ear while driving. And clip it to my coat.

On noisy highways the sound comes in better. I can listen to the Adam Carolla show and a few others without my kids hearing f bombs and other non-appropriate language with them in the car. And I don't have the same hassle of sliding it into its car holder, hooking up the dock cable, finding the podcast etc.

Not sure it will last. If I ever find out I left off in a podcast in the middle of it and the Shuffle is starting it from the beginning, well, a very tiny piece inside of me might die.
