At least it is possible to hide it in a folder. Do you remember the first newsstand appearance? That was annoying. So now the Watch App is out of my sight with its other friends Compass, Stock, Tips and Gamecenter. I really don't care about icons in general. But why some of them have to be so polarizing and not matching the iOS 8 theme at all?

Needless complication for the sake of advertising. I agree.

Yeah definitely. They might change it at one point hopefully, it's too many damn apps for buying stuff.
On one hand I'm on the side that says iTunes on OS X is bloated and should be split into different apps but on the other hand I keep saying there is too many store apps in iOS. Like the iBooks and podcast apps which are fine but the store should be in the actual iTunes store app. These apps should just have links in the top left corner like the music & video app which direct to the iTunes Store app.
On OS X you have the iTunes app for everything including podcasts but than somehow a separate book store in the iBooks app. My ideal scenario for iOS and OS X would be a combination of both like I said above which would basically be 1 iTunes store (which includes podcasts, books and other media), 1 App Store and than the individual apps that just play/use the media.

It looks like they made the icon the morning of the announcement. Very poor. Maybe it's a placeholder?

I've dumped it in a folder I call Extras, which has Tips, Voice Memos, Compass, etc.

Really though, who cares? Plenty of stock icons are rubbish. How about Photos and Safari for starters...

Or Newsstand or Garage Band or...
Obviously the sophomore level intern who created the stock icons has left and was replaced by another equally competent designer.

It is terrible, first thing I thought and then my brother texted me an hour later and said the same thing.

It looks really bad and almost like a camcorder. Hate it. Last minute or not, they should use one of the photos of the watch in the app itself. Looks so much nicer. The current icon looks like my 6-year old made it with Paint.

Yeah for me it's the black background, seems like the app logo is not finished.
The whole app is pointless tho anyway, syncing should be done in settings and the App Store should be in the , oh I don't know, App Store. Duh
It's a weird design decision but also brilliant advertisement.

Good point about the Apple Watch settings being in the Settings. To me that would have made more sense that having an app icon.

Reminds me of iTunes on the Mac, a one-in-all application. It could have been solved more elegantly. Or at least hide the icon until you’ve actually paired an Apple Watch with your iPhone.

I keep thinking its an app stuck in the middle of downloading and keep pressing it. It has the same look. 10 more times of my own stupidity and I am moving it to a folder.
