Because they are already producing massive quantities of sheets of this DPI screen. They get the benefits of scale by using the same production lines. That means a more affordable Retina MacBook Air.

You do realize that we're talking here about not only a corporation but Apple? Production savings would translate into profit margin, not reduced pricing.

Panel producers already make panels with a bunch of different densities.

or maybe u should start exercise their bertha

What a stupid post! People who are concerned about product weight aren't weak, they understand that extreme portability makes a product more useful in more situations.

Size and weight do matter (even for marathon runners). :)

Unless they intend to replace it with an 11" iPad, this is just silly.
And people should be realising the fact that an 11 inch iPad is even sillier. If Apple is dumb enough to actually do this I'll be the first to point it out to the local Apple store staff (who had zero decision making choice in the product being made).

Hopefully, not too way off. And as another poster said (replying to me), iOS is the future, time to get the ball moving.

Who said x86 is going away? Intel still has software compatibility and superior production technology on their side.

iOS is great for phones and tablets but it is not recognized as the OS of choice in professional software (science, engineering, software development, and many other disciplines).

Why would they reintroduce non-Retina MacBook Pro models? This whole Retina thing is not just a fad - it's the future. I'm willing to bet in 2015 (at the latest) all screens that ship on all Apple Products will be of Retina quality.

Agreed. People who think non-retina screens will remain in Apple notebook lineup in 2015 / 2016 are naive.

YES!

Make the 12" MacBook Air Retina.
Just hope they can keep up the 8 hr battery life and low weight. I'm on my 11" MBA now and I love this little guy.

Hardly. I would say its almost a definite.

What? Isn't that the whole point? They have an 11" and 13" non retina now.

Ditch them both, and introduce one 12" Retina model...price it at $999, and be done. How does that not work for everyone looking for a MBA?

Because I really don't want anything smaller than 13"

My bad, I thought they still offered the non-retina MBP 15". I'm not saying new non-retina models, but that they will still offer them. It's a list of what I think will still be available. ...but, I didn't realize the rMBP 13 is only $100 more than the non-retina, so, maybe Q4 they will discontinue it. ...I do think there will be some changes to the laptop lineup this fall.

I think it will be some time before all iMacs have retina screens, in fact, they may just go to 4K with larger screens, but, it may also take a couple years. These things take time.

Personally, it would be great if they could get to edge to edge screens and go with 14 and 16 retinas.

And maybe a 12, though personally i think when you get below 13, the power sacrifices you have to make to accommodate that size make it worthless. You might as well just get an iPad at that point. I'd kill it.

Pfff, bring back the 17" MBP!!!!! :D

A 3840x2400 resolution would make sense on a 17.1" screen. 264 ppi. And it's 4k. They could compete with the 4k laptops that are soon to come out, and that one Toshiba one that already is (although not much competition :p)

At that point they could at least claim they have a 4k offering.

Exactly, replace both the 11" and 13" MBA non-retina with one 12" rMBA for a starting price of $999. Maybe add a touch screen, removable keyboard and put an enhanced version of iOS 8 on it, in addition to OS X. If the 12" rMBA/iPad hybrid proves to be successful, next year release a 15" rMBA/iPad hybrid with OS X 11/iOS 9 and ditch the current rMBP models. Say hello to Apple's future.:)

Or say hello to Microsoft present, and something Apple would never do.

I wonder what features will be missing from the first generation, and "magically" appear in the second generation.

I wasn't suggesting that the retina MBA would be significantly cheaper but any cost savings in its production could move it from not feasible to feasible.

I'm fed up of the retina crap!

2732 x 1536 is nothing but a glorified 1366x768, meaning VERY limited screen real state. I prefer 1440x900 to 2732x1536 because I can fit more simultaneous apps in my screen.

Of course, Apple's slowly getting to the "after-math" of all other companies who try and get a smaller screen with an "outrageous" over-the-top res for a particular screen size.

I mean, when Apple introduced the Air, even if they could do it, i bet you anything they wouldn't have because back then it just didn't seem logical soon a mere 11-inch or 13-inch display, but now they CAN do Retina, it changes all this ?

umm..

And i thought other manufactures with 13-inch displays with 1920x1080 resolutions were ridiculous, but then to the untrained eye, the only reason would be to show it off as what it can "only" do at an acceptable display. and that would either be play movies, or graphics... That's it......

Game or web design would be ok i guess too, but not the best.. If its not the best from other manufactures, would could Apple do to make it any better ... At some point you must get to a high enough res, that it start becoming limited to a small area of things right ? based on screen size

Problem is that those apps would end up looking extremely tiny on such a small screen anyways, so you will unlikely be able to get any sort of meaningful work done, which is one issue plaguing windows laptops with high res-screens that don't run in retina mode.

And if you zoom in on the app, you get less screen estate, which defeats the whole point of having such a high resolution.

At this point, I would take a clearer display over more screen space.

Or... you simply stop the retina madness.

Apple already reduced the 15" macbook pro screen real state from 1600x1050 down to 1440x900 (2880x1800 /2). Sure, text looks crispier in the retina models, but you cannot put two internet browsers side by side, which is a big hit for professional users.

Now, they want to do something similar in the MBA family? I will stick to my old 13 MBA then.
