I had a horrible experience with the microcell. I was only getting 1-2 bars of 3G coverage in my house. When I brought the microcell home and hooked it up, I was getting 2-3 bars of microcell coverage only. There were times when I would only get 1 bar of coverage. I called AT&T and spoke to one of their reps. The rep told me that they do not guarantee 5 bar coverage with the microcell. She said that since the coverage increased by 1 bar (from 1-2 bars to 2-3 bars) that the microcell did it's job and I have nothing to complain about. I informed her that they need to change their advertising for the microcell because when I walked into the AT&T store, all I saw was 5 bars, 5 bars, 5 bars! Needless to say I will be taking it back tomorrow and getting a refund.

I've not seen my microcell get less than 5 bars unless the system is down which I haven't seen in awhile.

I picked up a microcell two weeks ago and have had mixed results.

When it works, it works great. However, my connection is very inconsistent. It will work perfectly for days at a time, then for some reason won't connect for the next day or so. It flashes that there is no GPS signal or 3G signal.

I think part of the problem is that I live in a 1st floor apartment with a balcony overhang and there is no direct line of site to the sky/GPS. However, sometimes it does find the GPS signal so I'm not sure if that's the problem or not.

Anyone else have a working microcell with poor line of site for GPS? Or suggestions to try and get it working better?

Hmmm..... my MicroCell is around 25 feet away from the nearest exit outside (my balcony door). I could not put it within 3 feet of a window as suggested due to where my cable outlet and modem are set up.

During the initial setup, it had trouble getting a GPS signal, but once it finally locked on, it has worked problem-free.

I don't really care about seeing the bars. As long as my calls are clear, I'm happy.

Same here. I don't always get 4-5 bars, & it fluctuates often, but my calls are always clear. That's all that matters. :D

Have a friend who is getting 2 today for his home/iPhones. To install do you need to plug into the network using a ethernet cable or will it connect by WiFi (this would make installation much easer)?

Past couple of days I've had to reset the phone in order to switch over to MicroCell. Last night my bars went to zero, no data transfer but still showed MicroCell 3G in the display, the unit itself was flashing just randomly. Reset both devices to resolve the issue then was bombarded with texts that were backlogged until I got service again.

Yes, it requires an ethernet connection. There is no WiFi support for the device.

With all respects, people have connection problems with their MicroCells with ethernet connection (100Mbps).....can you imagine on WiFi (54Mbps) unless you run it on Wireless-N but then I'd still want an ethernet connection.

(Speaking from experience with the Apple TV. Transfer speeds are a lot more efficient with the ethernet cable vs. WiFi.

Mine actually is on wireless-n. My M-Cell is connected to the Time Capsule in my office. But that extends a 5GHz Wireless-N network created by the Airport Extreme connected to my DSL modem on the first floor. I don't have a throughput problem with the M-Cell. When the phones connect calls seem fine. My problem is that the M-Cell often fails to connect the phones or keep them connected to begin with.

I agree. My iPhone 4 has problems handing the call off to the actual AT&T towers. When i leave my house and lose service from 'AT&T M-Cell' it drops the call instead of handing it off.

Yeah, it's REALLY SLOW connecting to the net... Turn Wi-Fi on... works much better.

Well, I've been going back and forth with AT&T for the past month trying to get my Micro Cell working. They finally agreed to replace my device. I replaced it on Saturday, and it the replacement Micro Cell doesn't work any better then the old one does. As long as I am in the SAME room as the Micro Cell, it works great, but as soon as I go into my bedroom, which is probably only 15 feet away from the Micro Cell, I experience garbled calls, or hearing the other person's voice cut out. The only way to fix it is to walk back towards the micro cell and wait until it stops cutting out.

I'm not sure what else to do at this point. AT&T keeps trying to blame Apple saying that the router drops fragmented packets and all that fun stuff, but I haven't heard a single response from Apple indicating that their router drops those packets, so I'm guessing they are just pointing fingers and starting to realize that the Micro Cell isn't for everyone...

Since it improves reception slightly in my house, I guess I'll just live with it knowing the limitations, but I guarantee you as soon as Verizon gets the iPhone I am DONE with AT&T!!!!

I decided to keep it too

It does give me good reception and good connection to email etc. so long as I'm on one side of my condo. While I just have one big open room, ATT says it only works for about 25-30 feet and often won't go through walls depending on what's in the walls. As I got no reception before I bought it, it's a great improvement. I'm frustrated though with the capped upload speeds (57 kbps). I'm also frustrated by how few of ATT's techs are aware of what the Microcell is actually designed to do.

The one problem I've had is that both my iPhone and the Microcell show 5 bars, but there is no GPS signal on my iPhone and the gear will just spin trying to connect to email. If I power down the phone and start it up again, all works great (except the GPS on my phone) until the next time. I'm not sure why this problem exists. I'm in Washington DC right on the Potomac.. ATT has told me there are lots of towers in my area but they may be tilted in such away that they reach other areas of Georgetown but not lower GT. Supposedly they are looking into it.

djrobsd I have the same issues

My Microcell is horrible with my iPhone 4. I had heard it was better with iOS3 but I never got to try that on my old iPhone 3gs. My wife has a Blackberry Bold 9700 and guess what? Full bars over the whole house for her. She has not had a single problem at all. My iPhone will drop if I go 10-15 feet away. I live in a newer house that is an open floorplan and no concrete or brick walls etc. It has to be something with the iPhone os. When I turn off the cellular data Settings>General>Network> Cellular Data the calls are no longer garbled, and the range seems to improve a bit, but it is a pain to keep doing this over and over! Please fix!!!

I have 2 major issues with my Microcell and my iPhones. First, the callers voice garbles terribly from time to time, making it impossible to understand, but my voice remains perfect for them. It seems to be just incoming.

The second, is MMS messages hardly ever work.

I'm pretty disappointed with the Microcell, and AT&T has been no help in fixing the issues.

where did you get a voucher from? Mail? internet?

i get no reception, spend $180 a month (2 lines) and couldnt get them to budge on the price ($150 total, or free with $20 per month). I told them that i was considering returning my iphone and inquired about my ETF for me and my wife. They told me that they couldn't do anything. bummer.

Sorry for the late reply. But I got a voucher in the mail which at first completely surprised my. I started my service with AT&T about 10 months ago but I do have 5 lines with two Iphones. As Surely stated call customer service and play nicely with them. Try a few times and you might get a CSR that cares about your service.

As for an update on my MicroCell I still have great call quality but the delay is getting hard to deal with. I don't have mine in priority mode infact it's 2 switches from the main router. I'm gonna try to move it closer to the modem I think.

I'm really happy with my microCell. I bought it at the AT&T store. They did the set up for me there, I took it home and pluged it in and it worked perfectly from the get go. I have no lag issues and the voices are perfectly clear. I had been using a cell phone repeater prior to this with mixed results. I can now get rid of my land line. :D

Edge to 3G in our area yesterday!

I have had the MicroCell since May. It worked great for a while but to make a long story short, I dug it out again and set it up. My phone worked fine but my husband's phone would drop calls constantly. Come to find out, we now have 3G in our area. I disconnected MicroCell and now all is well.

On another note, I decided to try again with CS for a $100.00 credit on this MicroCell because so many other people were getting them free or discounted. They did give it to me and on the same day the service went to 3G. :)

Still out $50.

3g Micro Cell does not deliver

It flat out just not work. I have Uverse which is att own service. I have the highest tier internet service they offer. 24 download speed. I was told it would give me full bars of 3g service. It would hand off from the cell tower to the micro cell and vice versa smoothly.
Reality is that it drops calls all the time going from tower to MC and vice versa. It also reset its self all the time. Sometimes I have to reset the MC and the router also to get it to connect again. I also have to reset the phones. Making phone call that sound garbled and have to end and call again. The thing I hate the most is that I will be outside where I have cell service and the MC will connect and I will have 1 bar and drop the call.

All these issues have been brought up to Att and all they make me do is reset the system. Apple has no idea what it is cause it is an Att product that has nothing to do with apple. So now I know why the MC was free.

Ok so I got a free one (Yay!). Right now I have 5 bars, however whenever I try to send a picture with a text it won't go thru. Anyone else have this problem?

Regular text only texts go thru fine, but if I attach a pic it won't go thru.

Supposedly ATT is pushing new MicroCell Firmware ....

Thanks for remininding me about this thread:

Anybody notice their devices are working much better now? For those that aren't, have you rebooted your Microcell to force the update?
