Ok. I'll make this short. I've seen many ppl wondering about the battery life of the new MBP (15"). From my experience it's incredible. Although I come from a 2016 13" with crappy battery life. Here is my screenshot from the activity monitor:

Mind you, that this is my first cycle, so it's only gonna get better.

For this first cycle I've mainly used the machine for safari, Spotify, twitch, youtube and also repartition the drive.

edit: Screen brightness has been at about 50%

Thanks. I was wondering about this for some time. How's the battery holding up in standby? Is the battery getting drained quickly unplugged while asleep? DDR4 tells me that standby battery consumption won't be great...but only the people who own the machines will know.

I haven't had the chance of putting it to sleep yet. As you can se I've used it for more that 8hrs with more than 50% left. I can update once I get hold of how it is in standby.

Be sure to test it a few days after purchase after all the initial load (e.g. iCloud, software installation, cloud drives etc.) has finished.

I think the results will only be better after the initial load :)

I think so to. But I, again, want to highlight that my use so far has been very light. browse, Spotify etc. Nothing demanding. I study data science so soon I will put it to the test for real but for "college stuff" this battery seem invincible

Yeah, enjoy it! I still haven't ran the battery flat yet (I plugged it in for it to download my 20000 photos iCloud photo library)

I have the 2.6 i7 stock config model too.

I would expect a brand new computer with a brand new battery to have incredible battery life, especially when compared to a 2 year old model which has seen its fair share of wear cycles. Isn't this totally expected?

Ofcourse. No arguing with you there. Thing I wanted to point out is that with medium to light use the battery is far far more capable that I thought at first. You can easily get 12hr+ with this machine

edit: My 2016 13" got max 7-8hrs with same usage. Even when new

To the OP, how many charge cycles and what is the remaining capacity of the battery of your old computer? You can check it out by CoconutBattery app.

Finally some good news about the macbookpro. If this is correct, then the 2.2Ghz, 15 inch should offer still longer life, which would be great for me since that is what I ordered.

I doubt you really "used" it for 8 hours.

Exactly, the supposed 15-hour battery life is absolutely not possible. It's just a slightly bigger battery than last year with a more power-hungry CPU. In other words, 8 hours of VERY light usage is tops you can get from it.

Have you actually used it? Meaning - how many of those 8 hours has the screen been constantly on and you doing something or the other on the laptop?

This 8 hours is from the point the power cable was removed and the laptop was not restarted or shut down. This includes all the times the screen was black, you were doing nothing, ergo, computer was in standby or doing vey little work such as playing music while the screen was black, using very little resources.

So, some usage statistics would be great. If this is the life that we can hope to get on moderate loads, this is awesome! Thanks for posting!

As I stated before. this is mainly browsing and using Spotify - not very heavy usage at all. If I start to push it sure the battery will drain like crazy. But max 8hrs of very light usage is simply not true. Is there any good application I can use to see actual use that you request? This laptop has either been in sleep (lid closed) or used by me since I charged it to 100%. That was more than 15hrs ago. It has not been idle as you might suggest.

I'm not trying to convince anyone, just sharing my experience. I come from the 2016 13" TB and that one lasted, like you said, max 8 hrs of light use.

I'm happy with the battery so far. I actually get 8-9 hours for what I do, and so far the standby is excellent. I'll report back in a month.

You can open Activity Monitor from the spotlight and check average CPU usage. Maybe also use something like Chargeberry.

I'm not saying you are wrong, but that the 2018 Macbook pro has the exact same components as the 2017 MBP (with a slightly larger battery and a more powerful CPU) and runs the same version of MacOS, so I can't think of a physical reason it would be getting almost twice the runtime of the last year's model since - well, it's almost the exact same laptop. What do you think? :)

You have some very valid points, of course. If you ask me maybe it's a matter of usage. If I used last gen maybe I would get almost the same result, who knows. But coming from the 13" it's like night and day.

Also note that when I'm on battery I only do light stuff. If I need power I always plug it in.

Im on the same boat with OP
Under light usage, i got around 10 hours and 20-30min, from 100% to 5%
Same light usage never got me more than 7-8 hours on the 13"/15" 2016 models...
So i wonder whats changed since then?
macOS softwars updates, larger battery life, same cpu (on light usage i dont know if it counts that is quad core or six)
Today i got more than 5 hours and 10 min from 100%-15% on FCP and some coding
I think this is the real deal on Apple marketing these MBP to have 10 hours usage
So after 2 generations, Apple get the keyboard and the battery how it should have been from 2016 day 1

Can any owners of the new 15" owners comment on how the machine is from a heat perspective. If you use it on your lap for 20-45 minutes will it start to get quite warm or does it stay cool.

I am concerned that it will be uncomfortable even doing light tasks.
