I am so excited. For me the real excitement lies in the design. Apple always designs such gorgeous products. I want to know what they pull out of their large black hat next.
As I've been reading through, I've noticed something a lot of people have been saying: "The touchscreen iPod is going to be expensive." Expensive? What? Let's step back for a moment and look at this.
First off, why has Apple been so successful in selling the iPod? Design, technology, ease of use, and so on and so forth. But there is one thing that has made Apple extremely successful. That is pricing. Have we all forgotten the way of Apple?
If you look at past iPod models, they haven't been expensive at all (with the exception of the iPod photo, at least.) As someone posted on this thread before, pricing is what makes Apple undercut the competition. This is indeed true. Consumers aren't going to buy a product that is garbage, but they're not going to buy an expensive toy, either. Apple doesn't risk quality or price.
Next is the argument of Wi-Fi making the price go up. Although Wi-Fi may increase price some, it's not going to make a very substansial impact. But if there's one thing that makes me mad, it's the fact that people think the new iPod will cut into iPhone sales if it's has multi-touch and Wi-Fi. Apple doesn't need to price the new iPod high just so it won't "cut into sales." They also know that people won't buy their 'Pods if they're priced too high. PHONE SALES AND MEDIA SALES ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS, PEOPLE. Unless you are a complete idiot, you aren't going to buy an iPhone for it's iPod features. That's dump. If people want a quality phone, they buy the iPhone. If they want a quality music player, they buy the iPod. 'Nuff said.
And at that, I think people need to step back and look at the big picture. Just becuase a product is "nice" or "technologic" doesn't mean it has to be priced higher. Look at Macs, they are better than any PC on the market, but they are priced very competitively. Apple is above all of that, folks.
So with that said, it's time to rethink iPod pricing and end wacko theories, too. We're all excited, but that doesn't mean to make garbage speculation.
Cheers.
you are so freaking wrong,
i know many people that are pissed at the idea that the new ipod may have very similar functions as the iphone. why spend 600 on a phone with an ipod, when you can spend 300 on an ipod and get a phone for free on whatever carrier you want. Personally i think a new jacked up ipod will be a slap in the face to all current iphone owners, THANKS IN ADVANCE CRAPPLE!!!!!!

You CANT get the iPhone on whatever carrier you want. and the iPhone is a phone with the iPod as a secondary feature, and it doesnt bring in 50% of apple's revenues like the ipod, so no its not a slap in the face. the iPhone having touchscreen, widescreen was a slap in the face to iPod users.
I don't agree. How can you say that Widescreen with Multi-touch doesn't offer anything new? Aside from less than a million iPhone users, who else experiences the advancements that exist with an iPod that runs OS X? Factor in the increase in screen real estate, video is suddenly going to be something that you're doing a whole lot more often. The iPod's current 2.5" screen (320 by 240 pixel resolution) is barely watchable. Yeah, a video off of YouTube that lasts for a few minutes is fine, but having to watch a full movie is simply murder. The iPhone's 3.5" screen (480-by-320-pixel resolution at 160 dpi)... video is not just something you play to show off the iPod's features, but rather, something you actually enjoy using. Also, we're bound to get additional drive space for even that much media.I dont forsee these high prices for "a glorified 5g". It has a touchscreen and is widescreen, but really doesnt offer anything new. It started as a music player, then gained photo, then video.
And I have 6 other screennames that'll back up my point of view, too. J/KLast night while out at the bars I was sitting with my friends and asked how many people had 5g iPods. Of those I asked how many would buy a new 6g in addition to their 5g if it had widescreen and was touch. 1 out of 6. Then I asked if it had wi-fi and a browser would you ditch your 5g. 5 of 6 raised their hands.
Would it be cool if Wi-Fi is included? MOST DEFINITELY! BRING IT ON! And perhaps you're right. Perhaps people who just plunked down $350 sometime last year might be reticent to buy now and wait for the 6.5 Gen next summer, but what about 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th Generation owners? Isn't it about time for a new iPod?!If there is no wifi I think Apple is reinventing the wheel which will benefit people who need a new iPod, but will not affect the people that already have a 5g iPod. Which is a lot of people. Add wifi, which wont take iphone sales, and you have a brand new product worthy of a new Generation marking.

Read the post in context,... I was throwing the guy a bone.Although you do raise a good point, that's not neccesarilly true. For example, the 5gen iPod was out for a pretty long time if you think about it. Everyone who still had a 5gen could have very easily updated their firmware to the full capability of a 5.5gen. So, if a 6.5 does come out, (boy, we're talking about new models when the newest one hasn't even came out yet!) I'm sure that the 6gen could just as easily been updated with a firmware update.
