FYI, Don Beagles has moved to the Think Secret forums, and posted this info a few hours ago:

"Here are the rough specs for the new iPod:

There will be 8GB of flash aboard, to run Mac OS X, and then a 60GB or 120GB hard drive for storage.

The high end models will have a 4" widescreen touch screen, at 640x360 resolution.

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Safari will be included as well in the high end models.

Expect pricing between $449 and $649."

Still seems like he is just trying to get attention.

I would not be surprised if that is what it is going to be. That's pretty much what rumors indicate and what most people want. Kind of pricey though.

wow...im not gonna lie...i believed Don for a while...he really got my hopes up....how he was saying this event was gonna be huge and all....:(...oh well. i still cant wait till wed! :p:D:apple:

I am, strangely, also looking forward to this new product announcement. I have in the last year-and-a-half gotten my money's worth out of both my original 1GB iPod Shuffle, and my 1st Gen iPod Nano 1GB. I've never really futzed with video or anything, but I also have a lot of video acquired from multiple sources that might be pretty cool to have on a portable device.

As far as the purchase price, well... that's what credit cards are for, man!!!

You were right that it is a full-screen display with touchscreen controls, but there is ABSOLUTELY no way that the new iPod will feature an emulated Click Wheel style. Why? Here's why:

1) There is no use for having a "virtual" click wheel. Why not just have real click wheel instead? The use for having a virtual click wheel is ZERO. People care about navigation, and just because you have a bigger screen doesn't mean people will like the UI.

2) I know many people will argue with me, and you can agree or disagree, but the Click Wheel interface is DEAD (at least for flagship models, anyway.) People aren't going to want a simple user interface. If you're going to have a bigger screen and more features, you need a better UI than a click wheel. A click wheel just doesn't cut it.

3) Design. A fundemental part of Apple's company philosophy. Let me ask you a question. Do you think it would be aesthetically pleasing to have a big fat wheel coming up on such a beautiful screen? I mean, having a real click wheel is a different story, but a virtual click wheel? Come on people, Apple is better than that!!

So I think we can all agree that an emulated click wheel for the new iPod is out of the question. Just my 2 cents.

I agree, plus another point:

4) Chose between two interfaces? That is not Apple at all. As someone already said in this thread "Apple has always been about making your choices for you." When Apple invents a new UI (that is Multitouch) and think it's superior to the old one (they do! remember Macworld 07 "the best iPod we ever created", "you can touch your music" etc) they would never leave the decision to the customer which one to choose. You can't even set a real wallpaper or custom menu-points in the iPhone, so: no, Apple doesn't like user customization at all.

Bluetooth would be great for wireless headphones. But I think it's way too slow for synchronization- wifi would be much better for that.

Well, not really. BT has speed of 3Mbit/sec, so that would be 375KB/sec. If your average song is 4MB in size, BT would transmit that in about 10 seconds. Now, keep in mind that you do not sync your entire collection all the time, you do incremental syncs. Suppose that you had added 5 songs to your library between synch, those songs would be transmitted in about 50 seconds over BT. And all it would take is for you to have you iPod somewhere near your computer. The sync would be 100% transparent with zero user-intervention.

Everybody keep talking "do you have any idea how long it would take to sync X gigs of music over BT?" when in reality we do not do that today. We do initial sync over USB that transfer the library to the iPod, and after that we do incremental syncs that are few megs in size. And BT would handle those just fine.

WiFi would be more complicated to implement and it would consume more power.

I still believe that an iPod with Wi-Fi is a must, so I thought I'd post my predictions (just that) to look back on after tomorrow.

1. Keep Shuffle. Very popular. Increased storage and new colours? (new ones are popular though, product(Red) one sounds feasible.

2. Nano. Different proportions as shown in leaked image/ engadget mockup. The increased screen size, but 4:3 ratio will allow it to inherit the content currently on the iPod video. I think this is the most obvious solution. Plus if it is as thin as the current nano and has the same clickwheel size it hardly deserves to be called fat (slightly podgy or big boned maybe :D).

3. iPod. The flagship model. Touchscreen (Widescreen) and Wi-Fi. Not sure on storage could be HDD or Nand based (But emphasis on video could mean HDD), if Nand I suspect it would use the Wi-Fi for streaming.

With the inclusion of Wi-Fi iChat is released for iPhone and iPod. Safari on iPod drastically increases its usage and web design will take account of it more. FiTunes :)p) the mobile iTunes Store is released. Accessed from Apple TV aswell. Internet radio app released for iPod, iPhone and Apple TV.

Finally with the crossover between iPod and iPhone, great oppuurtunity to release an SDK. Applications will work on both devices.

That is my slightly exaggerated prediction.

What do you think?

MR will no doubt have their usual high level of service.

Anyway, one day before the event and all the iPods are still shipping within 24hours on the online Apple store, could all of our dreams be shattered? New iPod Hi-Fi anyone?

I would imagine just because they still have some stock left of current iPods doesn't impact the event tomorrow... they just haven't run out yet. Furthermore to that, I've seen that shipping estimate be wrong so many times in the past... there could be a delay currently that just isn't updated yet...

Who knows

But I can tell ya... it's possible I'd shed a tear or two if there was a huge disappointment tomorrow

I dig the idea of Wifi Chat. Maybe they could toss in an iSight camera and Photobooth. Rad city.

I'm not sure that this has been brought up before, but what about playing from your wifiPod (airPod!) to AirTunes on your Airport Express. It could be done so easily, it seems like they might have to do it. I'd love to see that feature, but maybe I'm just dreaming.

Is it just me or usually with Apple Events don't the liveblogging sites start blabbing about when and where they'll be doing the updates? It's like 24 hours away and I haven't heard a peep from Engadget or Gizmodo or any place. It just seems strange.

By the way, does any one know when the event starts?

Look here.

I have been using the live chat feature on Apples web site a lot lately. I am trying to harass all of the employees trying to get them to spill.

Needless to say, it's not working. :(

Although one person did say, I can't talk about any upcoming products. So there will be a new iPod. Thats good to hear.

I was gone from macrumors for a while? can anyone catch me up to on this Don Beagles guy and what he did?

That design is actually pretty close to my speculation it would look like a cross between the current 5.5G iPod video and the iPhone, with the case size not much different than the 5.5G iPod video.

By the way, if Apple is willing to cut its profit margin on the 6G iPod video they could price the new touchscreen/full screen model at US$249 for the 80 GB and US$299 for the 120 GB if they cut out the Wi-Fi functionality, which would add quite a bit to the cost of the player. Bluetooth or Kleer wireless functionality could be a possibility, though, for use with the rumored iTunes music kiosks.

I have to disagree for this reason: the vast majority of users of iPods have never tried using an iPhone, and the leap to the iPhone-type touchscreen interface could be a daunting one. The current Click Wheel interface is familiar to iPod users for at least three years, and keeping the Click Wheel as an option could make it easier for new users of the 6G iPod video to eventually transition to the new interface style.

Yeah but iPhone interface is better. Nobody used it before either but i don't think anybody has a problem with it now. I played with iPhone and it was pretty easy to use.

I remember seeing a movie of a baby using the iphone interface, I don't think anyone will have a problem making the switch

haha i totally agree with you on that.

Another thing that points to the actual physical look of the iPod being like the iPhone is the iMac. I was just watching the press event for when they revealed the new iMac and Steve was saying that they slowly want to integrate their whole line of products into Aluminum and Glass, which means the new iPod will most likely look like the iPhone. Because why would they release the iPhone, the SR MBP, the G5, and the iMac with aluminum and glass, (MBP could have changed its look but they stayed with the "Aluminum and glass" look) if they werent going to release the ipod that way? Now, most of their line will look the same and have a "signature look".

Remember this time last year..... rumours of touch screen iPod's with click wheels... mock-ups with HD video of Jurassic Park....... what did we get ? A brighter screen....... keep the expectations in check…….
