Eh? Or you just unplug and carry on with what you were doing on the phone.
Except that doing a task started on your phone that you can continue on your ipad pro is not something that one can do with Dex. I do admit the one big use case for a desktop and it can be done via an HDMI adapter, is answering emails that require a long response, using keyboard and mouse.

One of the things that with tech that sometimes occurs is a narrow use case is made to seem like a general use case and for the masses, which is one reason why "objectivity is really hard".

Dex is a good example of this...and I agree it's a tool on the tool-belt and sounds great in theory, but if I am going to be tied to a monitor to do work, I'm using windows and that is my opinion. (Although playing games on your phone to your monitor sounds like a good use case)

I'm lucky enough to have friends that let me "play" with their devices. I'm definitely an iphone person as for my use case ios just works better. I always thought using Samsung that it's a collection of "features" and not a real user experience and you sort of corroborated that with a few tech items that don't seem to add much to make the more expensive Samsung devices best sellers.

....aaaand you can do that from the phone to your Tab, and doesn't need DeX. I was answering your specific thing here:

Dex you are tied to the monitor, stand and mouse. Handoff is freedom to continue a task on the go.

You're not. At all. Unplug and carry on. Or 'continue a task on the go'.

The Note 20 Ultra and the S20 Ultra I also have are every bit as functional as the Pro Max I have. Sure there's differences, but the usability isn't as far apart as you'd imagine. They're not just a collection of features. Maybe they once were? Not sure, I only really started playing with them around the S10 times tbh as I think my view of Android was somewhat jaded before that (whether it was right to be I'm not sure, I just never bothered with them).

I'm going to step away from this, it's getting repetitive tbh. I think many of you may actually be quite surprised how functional some other devices actually are from a technical/functionality & ease of use point of view.

Dex in my opinion, is still a half-baked solution, looking for some problem to solve. I suppose a half-baked solution is better than no solution. However, if I carry around my surface pro, I don't have to look for a monitor and keyboard to have a windows environment and can tether my surface pro to my phone, providing a fully robust environment.

I do suppose it's an option for those who have a spare monitor, keyboard and mouse laying around.
Well you obviously have no experience with Dex.
"half-baked solution"? LoL. Based on what is it half-baked? How could another company improve it? I doubt you know.

I didn't say Dex was "useless". However, I can project youtube videos on my Samsung TV as well using my iphone. And in my own opinion, it's a very narrow usage.
LoL, so you don't even know what Dex is if you give these kind of counterexamples.

I could take or leave a pen, but definitely would take all the others, especially powershare.

There's actually no earphones in the Galaxy Note 20 box in the US either.
Which I think it best. The phone won't cease to function without earbuds or any sort of headphones.

Lol, so you didn't read the thread before making incorrect assumptions.
No, I didn't make any incorrect assumptions.
You clearly said: However, I can project youtube videos on my Samsung TV as well using my iphone. Dex is not about projecting the phone's screen on other screens.

Dex can work completely wireless now so you aren't tied to anything.
Is the monitor supposed to "magically" accept a wireless signal? Or is an adapter needed? Either way you are still limited to monitors with a wireless adapter.

Again, you didn't read the thread and totally missed the context of that reply.

Any Smart TV launched in recent years has Miracast for example.
You don't specifically need a Monitor to use Dex.

The point is Dex can be used without any wires if somebody wants freedom to move around or whatever.

Again, you didn't read the thread and totally missed the context of that reply.

So I guess this is all you've got. OK.

There always seems to be some limitation somewhere, which is what tech is. I guess at long as it works for you is what counts. NOw an iphone can project a screen just the same using ATV or a native tv app. Same end, different pathway.

Please read the thread instead of randomly putting words through the internet masquerading as meaningful posts. Just my suggestion.

Yeah right, an iphone can project a screen has nothing to do with Dex.

You don't make any sense.
Anyway I clearly showed you what I mean, you are just bothered by the truth.

For example I also did say: Dex can work completely wireless now, which is absolutely true and accurate. You are just arguing with me for the sake of arguing, without any substance behind what you write.

You missed the context completely and went off on some tangent that had nothing to do with the post I quoted.

That aside, we all have our use cases and my use case for a Dex like functionality on ios is very narrow. And since youtube can project wirelessly on my smart-tv I assume ios can do it also. However, it's a family theater environment and not an office...so there is that.

So in translation what you mean is: I know I'm wrong but I really want to have the last word even if I just ranted on Dex for the sake of it.

This reminds me, a user here criticized Dex saying there's no deep work behind it although he doesn't even know what that means the same way you don't know what Dex being a half-baked solution means.

Oh come on guys. I know it's hard not to escalate conversations, but it's better for everyone if we at least keep it civil.

We're all interested in the same stuff after all aren't we...?

Peace.

So the bottom line is Dex doesn't seem to get the respect some say it deserves. I wonder why that is? At first glance it may appear to be cool, but I wonder if it is solving a problem that didn't exist.

As for the rest of the above, I hope it's finished trying to out insult another poster.

Ref 'problem that didn't exist' a lot of tech has done that over the years hasn't it? I had no idea about DeX until I plugged my phone into the dock to charge it. Then I was all OMFG what the hell is all this magic o_O:) Now, like I say, I use a fair bit. I wouldn't say I'd be lost without it - of course not - it's just a cool thing that's often quite handy. Same with the charging thing. Not essential, but handy.

I suspect Apple will do something very similar with it all being on the same chipset.

The only feature I really want to see in the 12s is 120Hz screens, really because I think now if I went back to a 60 all I'd be thinking meh 120Hz is so much better. Everything else is just a bonus I guess.

Shall we now have a fight about cars? That's always good for scrap. Mind you, I don't think you 'mericans actually know how to make cars do you? //runs

I think it all comes down to the individual and their use case. The original concept of Dex I think is brilliant. For those people who don’t have a desktop or if people are travelling for work or even on vacation. Being able to connect your phone to a larger screen and do some work is a great feature. I have a Mac and iPad Pro and even now my husband has bought a windows desktop so for me personally I don’t really have a use case for it. However I still think it’s a good feature to have and now that it can be connected wirelessly that’s even better. For people that want to live a mobile
Lifestyle and have their phone as their only device this is great.

However as someone in the Apple ecosystem I can’t really see the use case for things like Dex on the galaxy tab devices or Dex on the PC. Dex on the galaxy tab makes the tablet more productive. I understand that. However this is more to do with the fact that traditionally on android developers haven’t made good tablet apps. Dex on the galaxy tablets gets round this. However the iPad doesn’t suffer from this problem. Now don’t get me wrong there are some great features on the galaxy tablet which make it more productive than the iPad like having a proper file system and better multitasking but Dex on the galaxy tablets seems more about overcoming the shortcomings of android tablets. Now remember I prefaced this by saying as someone in the Apple ecosystem. We are on an Apple site so naturally there is going to be a comparison to Apple products. If you are in the android ecosystem then you couldn’t care less about Apple devices and Dex and the tablet is a great feature

Dex on the PC, is more about sharing what’s on your phone with the PC. Things like sharing and transferring files, seeing notifications and texts and phones calls whilst you work on your PC. On the iPhone some of these things can be achieved via air drop, continuity and iCloud Drive and I cloud photos. Obviously it doesn’t allow you to access the whole of your iPhone Or screen mirror but it does do a lot of the same things. I can see a use case for people who have a Samsung phone and a Mac.

Wireless PowerShare is a good feature. It’s nice to be able to top up wireless earbuds or a smart watch on the go without the need for a power bank.

Multi tasking is better on android phones. That’s a given.

The S-pen is a nice feature to have. The iPhone doesn’t have it.

I’ve never used a 120hz phone so I can’t say one way or another on that one.

Dex works works any Mac or Windows computer. You don't need to buy a computer from a specific manufacturer to get the feature working.

I would wager that most iphone users overall actually only own Windows computers(especially in Europe, South America and Asia). Imagine they could use solution like Dex that would work with the Windows PCs.

The fact that traditionally on android developers haven’t made good tablet apps is an exaggeration and Dex couldn't
solve this kind of a problem anyway. Dex doesn't change the way apps work, it just offers a familiar desktop experience that allows users to be more productive or almost as productive as on their computers while using a mobile oriented device design around touch screen functionality.

Doesn't that lead on to a more interesting ecosystem conversation? I do wonder if Apple is now making more phones simply to drive the services side of the business. I mean, there's not an awful lot of difference in phones today (really, if you're honest with yourself...) Are people keeping phones longer?

Pretty much most of the major vendors are pushing toward software & services rather than HW sales, and getting the HW into people's hands drives them to services doesn't it. Is that were the SE came from perhaps?

Google won't really care who makes the Android phones will they, although there is a bit of correlation to them releasing their own stuff around the time Samsung started trying to minimise Google services on the phones...?

Dunno. Interesting though, but a bit above my pay grade. I just like the shiny **** turning up to play with :)

Ohhh yes they do. The pen and display features alone put the iPhone to shame. God and that notch/bezel design Apple is about to be rocking for the FOURTH year in a row...yeah, no thanks. I'm holding out to see what tricks Apple may have up their sleeves next month for the 12, but tbh I'm probably going to be leaving the annoying Apple walled garden for non-Apple devices across the board, starting first with mobile.

These guys just aren't good anymore at what they used to do best, unfortunately. And no it's not because StEvE jObS iSn'T aRoUnD aNyMoRe. They had some bangers under Cook with the watch and AirPods (a product I'll probably keep using long after leaving). No, now it's:
  1. How do we only make the most money possible/keep the most control over developers and customers
  2. How do we keep people from ever leaving (which ties directly into #1)
I keep forgetting Apple isn’t a company, silly me.
