The 2014 models. I don't like the force-touch trackpads, and the 2014 models I've had have been bulletproof.

I still have my 2012 MBP lol, the Ivy Bridge is still pretty quick. I will upgrade when Apple introduce an OLED MBP.

As I wrote, I have never seen that happen on a 2014, and I've had several.

Let me guess - you haven't seen a SINGLE 2016/2017 keyboard fail? ;) Hyperbole is not your friend.

I'm sorry, what about my comment was hyperbole?

And Honestly, I've seen 2 or 3. Out of hundreds.

My Mid 2014 15" is still going strong. OK, so I had a problem with the screen, and it was replaced without a problem. I also got a swollen battery and had to have it replaced with less than 200 cycles done and it cost me a few bucks. But I now have a virtually new unit. Before I even think of buying a later model, I would rather replace the current flash storage (PCIe with x2 link speed) with the much faster flash storage found on the 2015 model (with x4 link speed). But the current one is such a performer anyway that spending the extra money on even faster flash storage is really overkill, unless it fails.

Thoughts now in 2020?

Looking to upgrade from MBP 2012, mainly for bigger screen size and resolution. At least a Quad core would be nice, as well.

I bought a 2020 16 inch MBP but still own my 15 inch 2012 rMBP.

The increase in screen size I barely noticeably. Both feel as snappy when doing general browsing and watching video.

However the new one is more capable when I am doing days science and running python scripts.

The late 2013 Haswell 15" Retina Macbook Pro is the best Macbook Pro Apple had ever created.

It's almost 2017 and it's CPU is as fast as the latest Macbook Pro. Read and Write speeds of 1gb/s and 16 gb of RAM is still very competitive too.

The only reason why someone wants to upgrade is for the 460 GPU, the need for USB-C ports, the touch bar or simply the need of having the latest.

Also the 2013 15" Haswell Macbook Pro has zero issues unlike the other models.

I don't think there has ever been a Macbook Pro that has been able to stay so close in performance (excluding GPU performance. If you need GPU performance you should buy a PC) to the latest models after 3 years of age.

I had a late 2013 rMBP 13" and I loved it. Still works great.

But now I have a 2019 15" base model and I love it as well.

I almost regret upgrading though, because I feel like my 2013 works great.

The only reason I upgraded is because I started a new project in my life, and felt like it would be a good investment.

I would say that it has in some ways, simply because now I mainly use it in clamshell mode with the LG Ultrafine 4K monitor the Apple store sells, and I would need USB-C for it.

So from that standpoint it has been worth the upgrade.

My 13" from 2013 does not have USB C

caved.... 2020 MBP M1 16r 1Tb.... dang this thing is nice. Coming from a 2015 15 inch

I recently switched from a 2018 15" MBP to the newer one - 16", 8-core, 5500M 8GB..
This is the best laptop I've ever owned. Previously, my favorite was the 2015 MBP.
One downside is that gets hot & loud more than I'd prefer when doing something intensive like playing a game.

Maybe that can be fixed by changing the power management settings and letting it throttle sooner than it's default settings? I'm not sure, but otherwise, it's an amazing laptop.
I love the new keyboard and the slightly bigger display.

Hows your battery life?
depends, but probably 4-6 hours depends a lot on how good my internet connection is! my mobile hot spot seems to suck more battery! that 4-6 hours is a pretty intense workout, YouTube, photo editing, music playing in background

Congrats. How do you feel about the 13 inch screen compared to the 15? Would you say its more about loss of screen real estate or an eyesight thing...i.e. much small fonts, etc? Thanks.

I think my 2012 rMBP is the best one ever made, perfect balance of features, power, size and weight.
I agree use mine for hours everyday. My wife was forced to work at home because of Covid we both shared it from Mar -Aug till she retired. i will probably get a 16 MBP M1 next year. I would replace the battery in 2012 but have not found a reliable place to get one.

2016-2019 was pretty much a lost generation. The new ones have a great deal of promise. Save yourself the heartache of butterfly keyboard, skip that generation.
