They have over $25 billion in reserves just sitting around. I am not worried.

hes just proving a point, some people are EXPECTING an amazing blow your dick off phone next year since there was no cosmetic update with the new one, when that one hasn't even been launched yet (agreed tho, i don't think anyone could sue apple to oblivion at this point... or anything else for that matter)

There's nothing wrong with the 3GS. And yes is better than my 3G. But I'm not up forthe discount yet, so I'll wait til next year. One nice thing is my next iPhone purchase will have a multi-core processor.

Wow sarcasm really escapes you all don't it?

I said the next iPhone will clearly NOT have a 1080i screen and time travel, yet some people (actually in this very thread) think that the 2010 iPhone will usher in a new era of mobility for all who hold out on this "incremental" "non existant" "little" "meager" upgrade.

There may not even BE an iPhone next year. For all we know apple may get slapped with a giant lawsuit for god knows what.

I enjoy living in the here and now. lets stay off the rumor mill for the 4th gen phone (should there be one) until the 3rd gen gets off the ground first. All this speculation is the same reason there was a collective sad face over the entire community after the keynote; the mythical front facing camera and non-existant love affair with verizon overshadowed all of WWDC. Poor P. Schiller could have jumped up and down on the stage and said "IT'S TWICE AS FAST , PEOPLE!!! COME ON !!!" and the reviews still say "no external differences? No changes what so ever."
Your right, those are the 4G features that could be coming next year.

- front facing camera
- availability on Verizon or other carriers
- better specs again: higher resolution screen, more memory
- dual core processor
- LTE. The future converged standard between Verizon and AT&T

This is one of my guilty pleasures. I get too much enjoyment out of it. Pay a fee now, or pay a fee next year. It's a wash.

I think when it gets released in the wild, many minds will be changed to the 'buy' category.

I want one now and I'll get one next year. It's worth it to me.

all you nay sayers, you guys just keep trying to bash the 3GS so you feel better about not being able to upgrade and say its not that big an update. 2G - 3G < 3G - 3GS

Well, one of the biggest iPhone boosters is Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal. In his review today he essentially said that the jump from the first iPhone to the 3G was bigger than this one. He called it incremental and that is what I believe too.

It's a waste of money to upgrade from 3g to 3gs.

I'll report back when I get my 3gs on friday hopefully! haha

OK, here's the rundown: The only "4G" network in the US is WiMax, aka Clear. It has just been rolled out here in Atlanta, and it's also in two other cities. Their speeds are pretty darn good, but we're still talking a new technology. I wasn't overly impressed since 3G is MUCH MUCH more available than Clear and is pretty frickin' fast considering it's mobile broadband.

It'll be at least 2011 before Apple makes an iPhone with 4G. There's no need to go to all that expense if AT&T has a very limited 4G network. As AT&T upgrades its 3G nodes, the 3G S owners will have even faster connections, so it's not like the iPhone 3G is some useless piece of trash.

I've been sticking with a 2G for a while now and will obviously benefit from the 3G S. I NEED the 32GB, the 3G speed (and other speed) will rock my world, and I'm sure I can find things to do with the GPS and compass. This is basically going to show that you don't need a new iPhone every year. Now that I can get on a cell network that isn't sloooow, It'll take a lot more features to make me drop another $300.

front facing camera? i've had several phones with this, never used it. if you would use it then good for you.

better processor? it's a mobile phone, what exactly are you going to use a dual core processor for? the 3gs shows that apps open very quickly, do you think a faster processor will open them BEFORE you press the icon?

are the people that are calling it a "minor" upgrade (ridiculous comment by the way, the experts all over the internet are claiming the 3gs to be an excellent phone, much better than the 3g....but of course they're wrong :D) are going to be sooooo disappointed next year when the keynote announces a new iphone and they realise that it DOESN'T take the dog for a walk.

People just need to stop saying that the 3Gs is not a big enough of a chang for them. Well that's great for you, but for someone who has never had an iPhone it's the same thing as you buying your 3G. When I got my 3G I wasn't thinking oh man it's way better than the 2g. Heck I didn't really know anything at all about the 2g, all I knew was that the 3G was WAY better than what I had. So to you, eh it's just a camera and faster speed. For someone who is new to apple and the iPhone, it's like a golden phone compaired to what they have...

PFor someone who is new to apple and the iPhone, it's like a golden phone compaired to what they have...

Agreed.
Although if someone hasn't bought an iPhone by now, the 8GB iPhone 3G for $99 may entice them, otherwise, why didn't they already buy one?

I, too, will be waiting until next year because AT&T made the upgrade decision for me, and I don't want another 2 year contract with AT&T if I can possibly have more carrier options (competition is a good thing!) next year AND get the lower price for the highest level iPhone.

maybe you should add a poll... who with a 3g is waiting for next year and whos upgrading this year...

im gonna wait til next year... dont really need anything the 3gs has to offer... though its a nice upgrade for 1st gen users or new iphone users..

I still don't see the value in relation to my 1st generation iPhone. I know the 3G/3GS is much, much faster but I am usually near WiFi when I do my "mobile" internetting. I paid $399 for my 8 GB iPhone and I am going to get every penny out of it. Plus, I still feel like the prices for the 3G/3GS plans are a bit inflated for my personal needs.

I don't feel quite like I am on a Cube with dial-up just yet. But I am sure that next year I will feel compelled to upgrade. Plus, I told myself I wouldn't buy a new iPhone until I could get 64 GB and now I've added OLED to the list. And what if the iPhone gets opened to other carriers. I would hate to be stuck with AT&T any longer than I have to. Another year is not a big deal. I still love my phone and it does everything I want/need it to do.

For new users the iPhone 3GS is a good deal.

For those who already have an earlier model, it will depend on your contract and individual situation. Personally, I would not break a contract to upgrade. Rather I would just wait to the next iteration of the iPhone.

Of course if the right incentive were presented then all bets are off! :)

Well if you already have a 3g...

The biggest reason not to buy a 3GS is because Amazon sells compasses for 6 bucks.

I csnt live with a 3MP camera, hoping next year a 5MP or better, so buying my kid one and getting his unlocked 16G g3 for my self so next year I can add a line IF its still on ebay.

Agreed.

maybe they wanted a phone that sends mms, or a phone with a decent camera, or a phone that recorded video, or.......

Agreed. Its better to wait until next year.

The iPhone 3GS is a minor update. It will be a bigger jump next year. And you'll be out of the 2yr contract and can choose what carrier to go with. Sounds like a win-win in every way to wait until next year.

That's also why I'm not upgrading. Apple can only get away with a "minor" update for so long before they have to dish out something really neat (which I bet they'll do next year), Plus, if I upgrade and Apple switches carriers, I won't be able to get the new and improved SUPER super duper phone (as ken says it) for a year 'till its out.

Aren't cellphones great?
Here we go again. And yet again we have people who know nothing about the iPhone it seems. The 3G S is NOT a minor update despite the look of it. Going from the 2G to the 3G WAS a minor update in comparison. Just watch the side by side videos engadget did. And I am glad you guys have a working crystal ball to read into the future because mine is broken, thanks for the update.
Yeah I heard the 4g iPhone will have 1080i and a larger screen.

Wait, no it won't. That would alienate all the customers on existing hardware. Oh well. All we'll probably see is a cosmetic change, which these days is a "major epic upgrade".
Sad isn't it. If we had gotten that stupid matte finish all these "its just a minor update" people would be drooling over it.
The 3gs wasn't a minor. it was a big one..

The 3g from 2g was a minor one.
Thank you. You are right.
What!?

How is speed not something you appreciate for a long time? That's just ridiculous.
I agree with you.

Exactly. How do ANY of these people get the notion of ANYTHING amazing next year? Where are your indications??? WHERE ARE THEY? WHAT is driving you people to make these stupid predictions? A gut feeling? Ugh.

Here we go with the front facing rumors again. And yeah lets get dual cores, because thats really necessary in a phone.... not. Not to mention dual cores would increase speed, and since the 3G S speed bump is considered a minor update, wouldn't the speed bump from dual cores essentially be minor as well? Oh snap.

Thank you. People have no idea what the heck they want, they just hear these buzz words and what not and decide they are needed in their phone. Dual processors? WHY? You are all saying the speed bump of the 3G S is minor so why ask for ANOTHER speed bump?

Face it, so many of you have no idea what you want, and you assume the more megapixels and the more OLEDNESS and cores the phone has the "ZOMG-AWES0ME!!!!" factor increases. Wrong.

Next year it will be the same song and dance. People complaining because they didn't get enough cores on their non-matte finished iPhone without a front facing camera. But wait, the iPhone 2011 will be AMAZING right?????!

They need to keep up with the market Sony will be offering a 12MP touch phone by the end of the year and it looks awesome, it does matter what they use.

no hd

Im gonna wait.

Imagine the next gen iPhone:

iPhone HD.

HD Movies and 4G. Sounds nice and crisp ;)

I don't think we are ever going to see an HD device, in a form factor like this. It just doesn't make any sense, screen resolution wise or the need for data in formats that would take up literally 10x the amount of storage space to be able to display. We could have some sort of HD lite format, but that would just be a waste of time and effort.

Also, the higher resolution on the screen, makes the specificity of touch more difficult to impliment.
