How odd! I downloaded French Connection already, but the main iTMS page still shows U Lied (last week's freebie) and the link on the main page still goes to U Lied, at least here on the west coast. At the moment (11pm), both songs are available for free download.

Does anyone have the list of discovery downloads complete so far. i have 3 so far but i didnt find out about them till recently so i might be missing a few. Also Doctor Q you should probably update your list to include all the discovery downloads.

I'd love to. If you scroll down in the first post, you'll see that I already have the first one I heard about. Post any others you know and I'll add them too.

I don't know how common these discovery downloads are, so I tried some random searches in the store for common words, and then paged through the results. By sorting on the Price column, you don't have to scroll (freebies will be at the top along with no-price tunes). In this way, I quickly looked through 30,000 songs, but I didn't find any discovery downloads. Looks like you have to be extremely lucky or else get them by word of mouth, like this thread.

Discovery downloads are actually pretty easy to find. There have only been 3 so far (including today).

To find them just go into every section. Usually I just start at Alternative, then move to Blues, then Classical, etc. Eventually you'll find in the middle top "billboard" a discovery download. This weeks download is in the Folk section.

If you go to the Folk section you'll see what I mean. For the past 3 times the discovery download has been in the middle top billboard. Enjoy!

The 2nd discovery download was in the classical section:

Although of course it's not free today.

The first one is on the list that the good Doctor is painstakingly updating every week. Keep it up! There's the two other discovery downloads if you want to add them. You might edit the post to note that the discovery downloads are at the bottom of the list so people don't ask.

Thanks, SilentPanda. Good suggestion. I reorganized the first post.

I didn't hear about "Haimovitz: Truth from Above" in time and didn't realize it was so easy to find the Discovery Downloads, so I missed that one. Have the Discovery Downloads always appeared on Tuesdays too?

Who has all 11+3 so far?

Well... the discovery downloads have been the same Tuesday and then the following Monday so I'm assuming they aren't changing. Unless they sneak one in during the wee hours of the morning and then take it back out... :)

I have 11+3 so for... but I'll start missing them in June as I'll be in Romania without internet (or computer for that matter). I wonder if I could get a really old school modem (the kind you had to put the phone on) to hook up to my iBook and work through the payphone? :p Nah... I'm not that desperate.

I tried to download the free Twentysomething track but the Music Store crashed with two different errors about the store not being accessible. When the Shopping Cart became accessible again, a $0.99 price tag had been added. :(

The Music Store is broken again:

"The iTunes Music Store is temporarily unavailable. Please check back later."

Have the free downloads overloaded the servers?

I got the "unavailable" message 3 times this morning, so either the store was having trouble overall or accessing the specific free tunes was the problem, since I was accessing the Discovery Download tunes via URLs when I had trouble. Each time, I just tried again and got through. And I can't prove this, because I didn't save the data, but I'm almost certain that the URL I got out of the store for one tune changed to a different URL when I copied it to the clipboard again. One URL value was before the "unavailable" message and the other was after.

Im just scared cuz they went over a week with their daily downloads so we will never know if they have hidden free songs that none of us know about. I guess we just have to work together to make sure the list is as complete as we can know.

Don't worry too much. They are just free songs. It's not like somebody is going to repossess your car if you miss one.

I had a very painful experience yesterday. I opened a leftover yellow-cap Pepsi and it had a winning (expired) iTunes code. Woe is me!

Does anyone have the accompanying text that Apple puts up with the description of the free single of the week or the discovery downloads? I don't beleive they did this duing the first week of singles, but started with CREA. Obviouslly, I've got the text for this weeks single and discovery download, but no longer can access the previous text.

On a side note, I'm glad I discovered this thread b/c I knew nothing about the discovery downloads until just now. I'll have to make sure I start downloading those too.

edit: Does anyone think I should start a new thread somewhere else asking this question? I'm worried about how much exposure it will get in here. I'll wait awhile and see if anyone in here knows the answer first, I guess.

edit #2: It's been 24 hours without a response, so I guess I'll start a new thread asking this question so it can get more exposure.

Who cares to download a free song... we all know they all suck. plus download the stuff you want..dont waste your cash

*feeds the troll*

How is it wasting your cash to download a free song? It does waste a tiny bit of hard drive space but I've actually enjoyed some of the songs that I've gotten for free.

Me too. I've been going around singing Jane's Addiction's "Price I Pay" for a week. It really grew on me.

I do download the stuff I want. If you're implying to download the stuff I want via illegal channels that's not really a good option for me. How can I show the artists that I like their music if I don't give them money in return? I can't go to a lot of concerts and I'm not going to send them personally a check in the mail either. The iTunes Music Store was set up so that the working people could send their money (no matter how small a portion the artists get) to other working people (the artists) for the goods they provide. I'm not crazy about the latest pop album either but I'm also not crazy about some random band I've never heard of named "Nitro Dogs in a Bushel of Grapes" either. I'll listen to what I like and if the iTunes Music Store has it I have no problem buying it. I tend to buy things I like and don't buy things I don't like. Maybe the RIAA is taking too much money from the artists but that's what they've agreed to. Their passion for making music overrules their desire to make money otherwise they'd get out. I pay the artists so they can continue with their passion just as others support me (inadvertantly) so that I can pursue mine.

Well, I got all the free downloads so far, but I missed out on the first two discovery downloads (Cullum, Haimovitz). Oh well. Thanks for making this thread and keeping it updated so I can find other free downloads besides the ones on the front page of iTMS.

Has anybody looked at the source code for the iTunes e-mail that Apple sends to mailing list subscribers every Tuesday? I happened to peek at it today and discovered that it has an interesting "boundary" string.

Usually these strings look like random garbage. But in this case the line in the header looks like this:

Content-Type: multipart/alternative; charset="ISO-8859-1"; boundary="This_is_the_boundary_hip_ho"

I wonder if that's a truncated form of "hip hop"? Or a bit of "hip hip hooray!"?

In case you wanted to know the geeky details, boundary strings separate the sections of an e-mail message that has multiple body sections, including most non-plain-text e-mail you receive. The standard for this stuff (RFC 1521: Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME)) specifies only that the boundary string should be no more than length 70, not end with a space, consist of these characters: space A-Z a-z 0-9 ' ( ) + _ , - . / : ? and be a string that another e-mail encoder is unlikely to choose (to avoid random collisions with nested/forwarded messages).

Looks like Apple was having a little fun here! :)
