If you look at the genre where the two latest singles are on iTMS and then look at the genre in the tag after you buy the song, they don't match.
  • "They" by Jem is listed under Rock in the store, but after you purchase it iTunes lists the song as Electronic.
  • "Sweet on you" by Clarence Bucaro is listed under Vocal in the store, but after you download it iTunes says the song is Pop.
When I look up Jem, they are listed under electronic. Not sure how you found them under Rock. I just searched for the artist name and they are clearly under electronic.

I've also noticed that there are several albums in the vocal section where the genre is Pop or R&B/Soul instead of vocal. I think that might be an effect of the vocal category on iTMS including a lot of music from different genres that just happens to feature a "big voice" front man/woman.

Did anybody catch any anomolies on the previous weeks?

Start at the iTMS home page, and use the genre pull down menu. Select Rock, and you will find Jem featured on this page as the free single of the week. Note that the link does not appear if you select the Electronic genre. However, you are correct, if you search for Jem, then the genre is listed as Electronic.

I think you and others don't realize that I update the first post in this thread every Tuesday morning, so you don't have to work hard for your free tunes. Just bookmark this thread and use the links in the first post every Tuesday.

Thanks Doc, I didn't realize you were doing that. Good idea. Also glad you set up this little challenge. Like I said in a previous post, I want to use the freebies as a way to listen music that I would not ordinarily listen to.

Ummm...don't y'all get weekly e-mails from iTMS reminding you to get the free song?

Member choogheem discovered that there is an iMix of the freebie tunes, including the formerly free ones and the currently free ones.

hehe.. Yes. It's linked to in the very first post of this thread. In fact, it's an iMix *BY* the person who started this thread.

Just to clear up possible confusion... The iMix is linked to in the first post because I added the link yesterday. I didn't know about the iMix before then, and I'm not the iMix's author.

I noticed you were back, SilentPanda, since you were posting elsewhere. Since you mentioned your trip here, this seems like the best place to ask: How was your trip to Romulus? ;) And did you miss many iTunes?

I'm pretty sure that today is Tuesday, but I still don't see any new free tunes as of mid-morning.

I have always found it amusing that trash collection in my area, according to a Los Angeles decree, is "Wednesday, except if Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday is New Years Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, or Christmas Day". Gee, I wonder how often Thanksgiving Day (defined as the 4th Thursday in November) falls on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday? :p

I brought that up because perhaps it explains the lack of tunes today. Maybe tunes are issued on the second business day of the week, which this week is Wednesday for most U.S. businesses. Oh wait, didn't they promote free tunes on Tuesday?

OK, a new theory. Maybe the person at Apple in charge of inserting the weekly free tunes had a little too much fun over the three-day U.S. holiday weekend, and has now stumbled into work late, confused and thinking today is Monday.

If you don't like my theories, please suggest one of your own.

I was thinking that maybe Apple delayed the new free downloads because they were going to announce a settlement with Apple Records that included the full Beatles catalog being available on iTMS. The free download would be one of the Beatles tunes, of course.

Or maybe it's something else :p

There are still two free tunes available from the store (including the one listed in the "iTunes free songs" iMix mentioned earlier). This may explain why there's still no new freebie.

Maybe they're getting so much traffic now they don't want to publicize a new tune, not to mention that some people may still not realize that downloading a free song will not win you an iPod.

I didn't miss any tunes cause... I didn't end up going. :( I've been in and out of the hospital and opted not to go. But the people that did go had a ton of fun. Maybe next year... :) But at least I'm getting to feeling better! Wheee!

Apple just posted the new songs. You can find them in the first post of this thread. This is certainly the latest in the day they've ever posted them. It's Wednesday the 7th on the U.S. east coast, but still Tuesday the 6th on the west coast.

Playlist Notes for this week's Discovery Download?

Can anyone find the page that displays the "Playlist Notes" for the Discovery Download this week (Believe)? I'm looking for the page similar to what you get when you click on the link on the iTMS home page for the free single of the week.

Well, I've got all the Daily/Weekly ones, but only two of the Discovery. Is there a way to "bookmark" the iMix in iTunes?
Do you mean bookmark it in Safari? One way: bookmark any old web page (such as this one) and name it Free iTunes iMix. Then go to the Bookmarks window (Command-Option-B), control-click the bookmark, choose Edit Address, and change it to this URL:

http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPublishedPlaylist?id=47821

Actually I was hoping for more of a "favorite iMixes" in iTunes or something similar.

Hmmm, I get a message stating that the discovery download is not available in the US store. Is there a different track for us here in the states?
No. I have the tune in my library, downloaded from the US store late Monday night, but clicking its store links now, late Tuesday night, gives me the mesasge "The item you've requested is not currently available in the US store." You can't search for it by artist or tune name either. Its just not in the store right now.

As a favor to the few MacRumors members who would rather listen to music than read my first post over and over, I edited the first post in this thread and put the charts at the top. :)

Well it seems that the link posted for this weeks discovery download (Motorcycle - As the Rush Comes (Radio Edit)) works again. The only problem is that the song is not free. Anyone able to find another discovery download, or are people who didn't get this song during the few hours the link worked out of luck?
