I just can’t imagine they’re all going to have that red crown... it’s going to clash with a lot of the bands.

I can see it happening. Remember, in 2015 there were images of the gold watch with a red dot (there might have been a blue dot version floating out there too, IIRC), and although Apple did not deliver on that it was of sufficient interest to some people that a business arose to offer stick-on dots. Maybe this is one way to differentiate the new model besides case color...

What if the red crown is touch ID? It could simplify unlocking everything Apple....

You touch the crown to unlock your watch once in the morning. For the rest of the day, the watch unlocks all your other apple devices that are within a (say) six foot radius. iPads, iPhones, Macs.

If any other device gets more than 6 feet away, it locks. Similarly, if you take your watch off, everything locks.

It's like central locking. :)

Valid point. That's why am thinking it could be possibly cosmetic or something to do specifically with the LTE model. But it certainly won't have a red crown for every casing color option, as that would be rather offputting.

So, sometimes a red dot is just a red dot.

At least it lets new buyers differentiate themselves as having a cellular watch....
Right. It’s all a status symbol. But non-cellular owners could appear to own a cellular watch for 10 bucks. https://shop.watchdots.com/products/watchdots-red

I wonder if he's been beta-testing since AW1 (when it was first spotted) or if the red crown is a tip of the hat to Mr. Cook...
Probably closer to the latter. I think when the Watch first came out Cook went to the design team and asked if he could have a special one with a red tip, then for the Series 3 they just pulled that idea out of the drawer and they figured red would look OK with most of the bands.

I'm sitting out this generation of LTE-enabled Watch just because of that red dot. It will clash with every band I could possibly imagine myself buying. What were Apple thinking? is Jony Ive asleep at the wheel?
