How is it racist to describe exactly what happen. I described people by their ethnicity because they were grouped thusly. I used no derogatory terms. You use that word far too freely.

Say anything to anyone who isn't of your race and your instantly a racist.

You described them by their ethnicity even though it's of no possible relevance. So what if Asian people are buying them in greater numbers than other people?

Words cannot describe how happy it makes me, a white person with two of them, to know that you didn't get any.

Wait, So asian people do not have wife´s or girlfriends that would also like a new phone?

To be fair if OP actually witnessed a lot of Asians buying 2 iPhones each in person it's not racist to report back something he physically witnessed happen. It would be racist to assume that every Asian in the line was going to do this.

Ohhhhh okay! I get it now!

This is kind of like the "I'm not racist, but..." Twitter thing.

And there are also tons of comments on this forum about people selling their iphone/thinking of selling their iphone for a profit. Obviously we aren't asking their ethnicity (because it doesn't matter), what is the difference? If someone wants to stand in line and buy an iphone, whatever they do with it afterwards, it doesn't matter.

This sounds like 'golly gee, good white folks can't get phones due to all the damn dirty asians'

You went through all that for a phone that you didn't get, and could have clicked a couple of times at home, remained patient, and you'd get one soon. Nope, needed to jump through every hoop imaginable and got the shaft. Hopefully you'll learn something from this.

Laughing at someone's misfortune, really classy you are.

Why is their race relevant at all? Why couldn't you just say that peoples' families started to arrive and join them in the line?

While I agree that these stories have some pretty thick xenophobia, if not outright racism, I do think that in this case the race of people in line is somewhat important to the overall story. It is common practice for foreign nationals to buy iPhones in the US/Europe and resell them in their home countries for profit, because, A) The new iPhones are not being released in those countries at the same time, and B) iPhones will be very expensive there when they are released. A lot of people buy iPhones at subsidized prices in the US and then sell them at above retail in their home countries. It's not racism to point that out, and ultimately, the point was that tight supply was constrained even further because people in front of them were buying multiple phones to resell in their home countries. I think the key is that Apple/carriers need to restrict day 1 sales to 1 per person, as that would probably help somewhat.

But still, I agree that the wording definitely made it feel a little dirty.

Agree with the first post in this thread. Where do they all come from? No wonder people have such a negative attitude towards all of them. Take a look at this photo I took this morning whilst wasting my time queuing for an iPhone. Spot anyone who looks like they really want the phone?

Do you always blow up balloons and giggles like a little girl in the middle of the night waiting in line? So by your logic if you answer no, you are a scalper?

Had a hell of a time trying to get a 6+, I don't have a lot of disposable income but treat myself to a new iPhone each year as its my most used item (and after selling the old one doesn't work out to be hugely expensive) so did the usual routine after seeing the announcement last week. My gf is due an upgrade on her phone so wanted to do the same thing and go the cheaper SIM FREE route.

At about 7.45 we signed onto the Apple Online store via the app which has always worked, come 8am it messed up as I'm sure many of you know but we kept trying and eventually got an order - however the payment failed (for reasons I don't understand) three times. Forth time worked fine but by this point it was set to be delivered in 3-4 weeks, still a month away.

After much searching around to see if anybody would be selling them SIM FREE we noticed that the only people aside from Apple doing this were Phones 4U so placed an order there - they had stock for delivery on launch day! Less than three hours later the company went into administration.

So feeling somewhat cursed we decided to check the Apple reservation site countless times a day all week, no luck. We realised we were going to have to do the unthinkable: queue outside an Apple Store. The nearest to us is Southampton which is a very busy location covering a wide range.

Feeling embarrassed and somewhat lame we planned on leaving early this morning. As reports started coming in on the scarcity of the 6+ we became anxious and decided to leave our place at midnight to ensure we'd get a place near the front. A quick browse of Twitter however saw a tweet at about 9.30 saying there were already 40 people there.

We jumped in the car and sped there like mentals, when we parked the meter ****ed up and we got given an invalid ticket. Irritating. We hurriedly made our way to the store outside and were quite happy to see the line was not huge: we were about sixty in the queue.

I'm not going to lie about this, it was uncomfortable. Due to the rush we didn't have sufficient seating and just sat on old couch cushions. Thunder and lightning started along with the rain, we didn't really have suitable food and drink people were being complete sucks to everybody there.

We just shut up and made the best of a bad situation, not quite believing that we are this ****ing sad to be in a queue overnight for a phone. It would be worth it though for the one big treat of the year to ourselves.

Suddenly we noticed there were a disproportionate amount of Asians in the line, certainly a lot more as a percentage of Southanpton's population than you'd normally see. There seemed to be getting more and more.

Eventually as it began to get light the Apple staff came out and started taking reservations: it had been so long now that urinating and sleeping were very high on our list of priorities but still we were excited and discussed what we'd do if we couldn't get the model we wanted (64gb + in black, we'd settle for 128GB or a white one in either size even though we can't really afford it).

It was looking good until it became apparent that every Asian person was ordering two + models each, clearly to resell. You know where this is going - despite our pathetic adventure and camping out overnight like a couple of losers we got nothing. All of the + models had gone to the scalpers.

It was a fun drive home, at least once back one of the most relieving pisses of all time was had and of course the beauty of a nice bed after being plonked on the pavement felt lovely. However now we're feeling like ****, didn't get the phone we were really excited about and to top it off I have a ****ing headache.

I realise that it's just a phone and we're not moping around or anything - this really doesn't matter in the scheme of things - but after that series of unfortunate events I really wanted to vent. So thanks. FFFFUUUUUUUUUU

With no disrespect, when I picked up my phone from the Apple store in Sydney the large majority of customers were Chinese. Many guys blatantly
scalping also.

I would never queue up overnight just for a phone but each to their own but to the people that do please have some balls and stand up for yourself and dont allow yourself to be pushed further down the line because of queue jumpers

Pretty sure every Apple store line was dominated by white people buying for their white children.

Which is fine, unless they plan on reselling to their children at 300 percent markups. Then I would complain about that too.

Wait, So asian people do not have wife´s or girlfriends that would also like a new phone?

No. Us Asian people were born to scalp the iPhone. We make babies and they become scalpers too. We pass our scalping technique down to our children and grandchildren.

Hi I completely agree with you, I only pointed out ethnicity because the diversity is so different to what I see on the high street and around town on a normal day.

You seem like a more than reasonable person able to see both sides. If you could please can you explain what it was that made you feel 'a little dirty' as it was not my intent at all.

Okay coming out of the woodwork to say I'm Asian and I don't read this thread that way. Political correctness obscures a lot of truths about human behavior and group behavior so that they never get addressed or corrected. We go on being obnoxious in our own unique ways because everyone is too darned scared to speak up and fear having the racist label shut down their free speech.

That being said...no Asian brothers are handing me an iPhone. I'm not well connected I guess. Maybe if I sing you the song of my people...

By the way it's funny how people are quick to jump on racism in this forum, but let me tell you, as a female I see so many sexist comments go unremarked upon. Odd, that. Oh well, not like I care all that much either way. A teacher once told me, when I was being subjected to real racism, I can't control what people say but I can control how I react. I choose to not waste my time and energy being offended when people are being merely a bit awkward and not truly hateful.

I'm not Asian but I am a woman. I can understand frustration at scalpers or potential scalpers. I also agree that there is a lot of sexism here as well but just because people note one doesn't mean that another is less important. I just think if you can't get a phone today due to scalpers, then you need to adjust your techniques, not blame Asians. And I was also trying to say that there are scalpers of all races due to the constraint on inventory.

Perhaps if things are that tough you should focus on things other than a shiny new launch day luxury item?

You can do whatever you like of course, but that's the obvious observation. People who can't afford it are even skipping work to try and get it.

Just because you have every right TO do something, doesn't mean you should.

Sorry it didn't work out. Maybe it was a sign trying to tell you something? I don't believe in the "everything happens for a reason" crap, but many do.

Sucks to hear that but the best part of this thread was all the British idioms.

Yes, unfortunately ethnic groups can greatly impact things like this, especially in parts of the world where there are major concentrations.

Gotta say you only did this to yourself... takes half a second to check the weather... 15 minutes to pack some food, umbrellas and chairs.... and a not so wasted night if you just waited for the phone to be shipped...

Well the fat white chick at the front of the picture looks the least interested of the bunch.

Looks like some folks buying them for Allah.

Everything nowadays leads to racist comments. It's sad, really. Get over yourself. Deal with diversity, and move on.

I, personally, am asian - brought up in a Caucasian household. I wouldn't scalp iPhones (or anything for that matter) but I wouldn't criticize people for it either. If you're that concerned, get there earlier or preorder online.
