It's amazing how many people still do not know the basics of how television works.

First off this is a move CW had to make because they signed an exclusive deal with Netflix that means shows won't air for months after broadcast, pulled all of their shows from Hulu (which all the other OTA networks use) and had to find a way to retain their weekly streaming numbers. So props to CW for making it harder to watch their content and being forced onto their own app instead of one place that most others use I guess, eh?

Second the CW app has always existed to air most of their shows weekly. This just expands the number of shows with full episodes. Other networks also have free streaming apps to watch their weekly content, so nope, they don't need to catch up. They've been doing it all along.

Third. US only? Yes because that's how television distribution works. CW despite it's affiliations with two major media companies is a distributor. It does not make or own the shows exclusively. Those rights belong to multiple owners such as Time Warner and CBS who actually make the television shows and yes, DC for a lot of the licensing. That's why US viewers can't see any content made by other networks in other countries. Where is the Space app from Canada so I don't have to watch their content edited for Syfy? Where is the US BBC iPlayer app for example? Oh that's right, there isn't one because the BBC would rather sign distribution deals with American networks to show their content in exchange for money.

The production companies that make a television show dictate what and where something can be seen. If something you want to see isn't available in your country, complain to the studios who sell it to those networks. And before you start criticizing US television networks check your own country and see how many of their productions are viewable outside of your borders. It's standard business across the globe.

I love the idea of the app.

It's a hot mess, though. There's no watch list or queue.

Navigation is less than intuitive.

Canada will have to wait A LONG time for anything like this. As mentioned, Rogers, Bell, Shaw, etc (those that own the TV stations) own the broadcasting rights in Canada. That's why we don't have an HBO app, because Bell owns the broadcasting rights for HBO and wants to to subscribe to cable, so that's the only way to get it.

Changes are coming to Canada, though, as there are hearings going on to figure out how to regulate content over the internet as more and more people watch programming over the internet rather than TV.

This is great for CW. Just wish they would also create a No Commercial Tier for those willing to pay for it. Really hate we lost this option under Hulu.

what do you mean by that? My Hulu subscription doesn't have commercials and never has.

Huh? I just logged onto the Hulu website and the "Watch Commercial Free" link is still there.

Nice to see decoupling from the dreaded set top box as well as the cable and satellite providers. Nothing worse that having a nice flat screen TV, elegantly mounted on the wall to then have all those crap cables leading to the hideous cable or satellite set top box. Hopefully more content providers will follow.

That's why we have CI+ (= smartcard inside the TV) here in the "lands of the tail".

Guess US account + VPN will work.

[ Yes CW.. not all your shows can be seen here, maybe on Netflix some day, otherwise we know to find them... maybe in a 100 years the stupid distribution rights, content rights etc.. are gone ]

FREE? what a BS...
i don't call "free" anything that is riddled with moronic commercials every 5 minutes

Great - now how about the rest of the networks join in - Looking at you CBS, NBC, ABC, and FOX
As their Cable TV discribution contracts with Comcast and other cable television distributors expire, we will see similar change. My guess is Fox will jump first and then the rest of the legacy media's will follow.

"As promised last week, The CW network today released a new Apple TV app that allows ***all fourth-generation Apple TV owners*** to watch new episodes of shows on the network for free with no cable authentication or login required."

Wrong. It’s US only

"Users simply need to download the app and click play on a show to watch, with no other hoops to jump through."

Wrong. It’s US only

"The CW can be downloaded from the App Store for free."

Wrong. It’s US only

Please update the article to make the information correct.

Changes are coming because even Canadians are waking up to how screwed over they keep getting by the communication cartels. We don't even get the same shows or the newest seasons of a show on the same network as in the US, yet our cable subscriptions rates are higher. I watch Animal Planet, which is owned by Bell, but compared to the US Animal Planet, we don't get a number of new seasons instead last years' re-runs ad-nauseum.

We're terminating our contract with Telus once the 2-yr term is up. Hi-speed only after that. VPN and the other usual tricks to get around the limitations.

My ladyfriend and I binged Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on Netflix. It's a fantastic show that slightly fills the hole left behind by Flight of the Conchords.
That's a recommendation that makes me want to check the show out - I loved FotC. I'm amused whenever I see their "fanbase" on other shows, and their agent showed up on an entertaining episode of the X-Files miniseries.

Huh? I still have it. It's a $4 add-on. Unless you mean how some shows aren't included. I've only come across one myself - The New Girl - and I only have to watch one commercial before the show begins.

Edit: Nevermind, I think you're referring to "we [who watch CW shows] lost this option under Hulu," (with the assumption that CW shows will not end up back on Hulu after negotiation). Fair enough.
