sad to see david tennant leaving with russel t davies but knew this was coming. I really hope they have more than just christmas special b/c the new doc won't start til 2010. My wish is that patrick stewart will be next doctor no matter how unlikely that is. In a recent interview stewart was quoted as saying he was slated to be in upcoming episode as guest star....now with no davies/tennant, might never happen.

The Doctor does seem to be getting younger in his past few regenerations - McCoy->McGann->Eccelston->Tenant. I kind of like the idea of having a relatively older Doctor again (not as old as Hartnell though! 😛 😉) however I don't know if the powers that be will go for it or not, being that there will be pressure (rightly or wrongly) to keep the show hip, fresh, attractive to the youth viewers, blah blah. But, if Moffat's in control, this definitely shows a lot of promise.
Looking forward to the remaining Tenant specials, however really looking forward to Who 2010. 😉 😎
I think he's said recently about preferring someone is his thirties - for one thing, the role can be quite physical at times so I don't think we'll be going too old.
I've no complaints with a younger Doctor if he's right for the role, I think as he gets older it's maybe good to go with someone who has a bit of 'tiredness' about them, if you know what I mean.
Given his recent behaviour, I don't think there's any chance the BBC will let him get near a phone box of any description...

does the timing of the announcement seem odd? maybe he's committed to something else about to be announced.
also, buried in the press release it says that the final special will be broadcast in early 2010 which seems to confirm the 2 part Christmas Day / New Years day theory that was knocking about a few months back.
will they start production on Series 5 in the summer as usual ?
this would mean the identity of the new Doctor would be revealed 6 months before the regeneration scene is broadcast

The new series starts in 2010, plenty of time for people to have moved on and forgotten about what was really a trivial incident.

Indeed, but in all seriousness I'm not sure Brand a controversial figure who is frequently in the tabloids with tales of his sex life is quite the kind of man the BBC would want playing the lead in one of the flagship shows of its family programming.
Besides, I think Brand is turning his attention towards America now, and as DAC47 mentions taking the role would involve spending a big chunk of the year in South Wales hardly ideal for someone wanting to crack the States.
I think this has been known by Moffat & Co. for a while now, and they all have been planning thusly. As for the new Doctor being revealed 6 mo. prior? Well, it's going to happen, it always happens that way. Keeping the Doctor's identity secret is a near impossible task in this day and age.
Even in the past from 7 to 8, 8 to 9, and the revelation of Eccleston, all of this was known by the fan community (and the press) months prior to broadcast.

alternatively they might wait until early 2010 before starting production on series 5 and put it on in the autumn rather than the spring😕

I would welcome this as well, and think the potential is there with Moffat at the helm - I have absolutely enjoyed all of his previous Who stories. 😎
I'm *very* excited that Moffat is at the helm now. I also hope that the desire to have Neil Gaiman write an episode pans out. Gaiman has stated that he'd love to, but it all depends on schedule and time. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this!

Over the summer I had only seen half of S4. I figured I'd wait until the dvds came out to catch up.
In the meantime I heard the news about Tennant. While upset I was not gutted.
Fastforward to now. I have finished the series on dvd and have two issues to discuss.
1) Rose. Why did they need to bring her (and the family)?! I truely feel like the end of JE has changed how S1-2 should be viewed now. Before, the end of Doomsday was one of the most heartbreaking things I had seen on screne. Now? It's almost meaningless I think. The final (really final?) scenes between the Doctor, half Doctor and Rose was so brief and weak. She even said herself the half Doctor really isn't the Doctor. 🙁
2) Tennant leaving. As I said before it didn't bother me. However, after finishing the series and watching Tennant put out some of his best performances to date I am truely saddened that he will no longer be in the role. Yes he'll be around for 5 more hours, but it's really bitter sweet. I really wish he'd stay around for one more full series since Moffat will be in charge. I'd enjoyed every episoded written by Moffat and to have Tennant miss the opportunity to work with him over a year is almost criminal. 🙁

Absolutely fabulous. I sorta wished they ended Series 4 that way. I guess you can't have everything in life. 😀
