There ain't gonna be no coating on a stainless steel antenna. There's a reason it's called "stainless." It's notoriously hard to coat with anything and get it to stick for any length of time. Try coating your silverware with something and see if you can get it to stick. Can you imagine the outcry if Apple does coat it with something and after 2 weeks it all starts peeling off?

As long as Apple keeps the antenna on the outside and they keep making them out of stainless steel, there's never gonna be a coating. So if you're waiting for Apple to announce some new iPhone 4a or iPhone 4v2, don't hold your breath.

FYI - The stainless steal band is not the antenna.

Stainless steel band
Created from our own alloy, then forged to be five times stronger than standard steel, the CNC-machined band is the mounting point for all the components of iPhone 4. The band provides impressive structural rigidity and allows for its incredibly thin, refined design. It also functions as both iPhone 4 antennas.

I second this well thought through response. Nice to see rational thinking and no flame.

Indeed. Just like the good-old days of MR. (Pre iP4 :) )

And I agree: The free case program was a deft bit of PR-engineering by Apple, but the crisis is over.

Why so much personal hate? You've contributed NOTHING to the thread so far.

You just wasted a post. And no, I doubt Apple will issue a redesign for the iPhone in such a short span of time, or they're gonna infuriate current iPhone 4 owners.

I love the OP, so funny. Most troll's get bored and go away but this guy keeps on going!

I can only assume that he must be really REALLY bored most of the time :D

Hey buddy, most people dont even discuss the antenna anymore, that was AGES ago. Still trying to hold on eh?

I never understood where this non-conductive coating solution came from, like fixing this problem is just that simple. Apple has a bunch of super smart experienced engineers that, judging by their look into Apple's test facilities, more than likely knew about the extra attenuation. Yet apparently a bunch of guys with PhD's couldn't figure out what the internet did, just slap some ambiguous non-conductive coating on there and watch the problem disappear. Forget the fact that RF is pretty finicky the way it is and adding a coating could just detune the antenna even more, or that it might just rub off after a week of use assuming it sticks in the first place, the internet has created a solution and it must be implemented!

Late June early July 2011 when the i5 comes :)

+1. I use a case, so the antenna problem really is non issue for me.

Apple knew full well about any attenuation long before any iPhone 4 was sold, let alone lost. :D
I'm sure they viewed it as an acceptable trade-off, for more internal volume and device thinness.

I bought my iP4 knowing full-well about this issue, but I don't care. First reason being, I am right handed so this won't affect me. Second reason is that I have a free bumper, which solves any issue. Even if there was no 'Case-Program' I'd still NEVER have my iP4 naked, for use on daily basis.

stores

What issue? You literally can't walk into an Apple store and be sure that you will get an iPhone 4. 3 Months after its release. That phone with the "issues" sold 100,000 in just a few days in China, and they have like 4 store there.

The iPhone will be updated next year. Like usual. If you want one now, buy now. The iPhone 4 is imo one of the greatest pieces of electronics I have ever owned (and I had the original iPhone and a 3Gs).

I have walked in to three stores in three cities, and walked out with new iphones in five minutes. The fact that the website shows "3 weeks" is total bunk.

wow

Wow, timing of post

seems that even the online STORE is showing 5-7 days now. No more waiting, demand is now filled.
