Then IE4 came out and kind of... won. I never really liked IE much, but well you know the whole default installation story, and I'll bet most Mac users use Safari.

Thats completely different - many Safari users (including myself) have tried alternatives for a good amount of time and decided they prefer Safari. The same cannot be said of IE on Windows as almost no one switches from FF to IE.

Although I must have used Netscape, I have no memory of it, and horrible loading times of Yahoo! games is my main memory of the 'olden days'.

I switched to FF as I had a big problem with IE that I couldn't solve (it would show backgrounds as white, which was especially dreadful on Bungie.net which I couldn't navigate). I didn't want to reinstall Windows again, so I downloaded FF and within a week I switched my entire family.

It's pretty sad that the Netscape brand isn't considered worthy of development by AOL. I have Netscape 9 installed on my Mac Pro (although I use Safari), and use Netscape pretty much exclusively on my classic Macs.

Good riddance to bad rubbish .

I remember the first version of Netscape that came out with gecko it was a shocker

Totally let M$ and Internet Explorer dominate the browser market

(for that matter I dont think Firefox is much of a step forward TBH:p)

After more than a decade, Netscape is gone. I remember using version 1 at school, and I use 9 as my primary browser at work (Safari at home). I'm going to miss it :(

Netscape are suggesting that users try Firefox. Personally I found it hopelessly unstable. While Firefox would crash almost daily*, NS9 has crashed only once on the same system. I plan to keep using NS until it's not practical to continue to do so.

Does anyone else have any Netscape stories?

*I know that somebody's going to pipe up and say "it shouldn't do that" but I'm lazy so instead of trying to find out the cause of the problem, I simply fixed it by changing to Netscape.

Oh woe dear Netscape,
we will miss you much.

Actually, I last thought of Netscape about 3 years ago:)

When did NS9 come out?

I have 9.03 on my MBP. Downloaded it a couple of months ago, hoping it might stop some of the stupid 'incompatible browser' pop-ups from my internet bank.

Man O Man, talk about bringing up old memories of my first few days on the "internet"

I loved the Netscape browser and how cool it looked compared to IE
