I wouldn't mind a persistent row of notification icons -- that pull-down notification thing by itself just ain't doin' it for me.

The problem with widgets on ios is that it wouldnt work/look good as it is stock, when you jailbreak you have many nice themes and ways to custom everything that make the widgets looks nice.

The weather widget on NC will look pretty crappy in the homescreen lol

What about a way to reply sms/imessage over the lockscreen without unlock or not having to open the main app ? That sure will be a very welcome update !

What if Apple uses that space for a widget-style banner that displays certain information. For instance it could show a bigger clock with live weather, date, etc. There could be a plethora of different ones you could put in that space. Maybe app developers could update ther apps to support this widget styled banner.

I'm not saying its a particularly good idea, or that I even like it, but anythings possible at this point. For all we know Apple has been trying to find a way to get in on the world of widgets or live tiles, and this is their first step into it. They do like to implement things slowly. It also wouldn't be the first time they took something from android and restyled it in ther own way. (pull down notification tray)

The problem with 'live' apps on a home or primary screen (i.e. one that gets viewed or used a lot under normal phone use) is that it takes up processing cycles, and therefore battery power.

I think the time will come for this type of this to be implemented, but i think battery and processing tech need to be more advanced to cope with the increased pressure on resources that these introduce.

I think you are overestimating live icons' effects on battery life. Push notifications already update "live," as does Calendar. Adding a few more isn't going to have a noticeable effect.

good point, i'm sure apple could get it to work via their push notification system too.

Another row of icons I don't use, and a wider screen for movies and games I don't play.

yea.

Yeah, me too. I only use a couple of rows of icons on my home screen, and never watch movies or play games.

Won’t keep me from upgrading though!

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but wouldn't we know this already, if it were true, b/c of iOS 6's dev previews?

While I don't think we will see this (I hope I am wrong though), we wouldn't necessarily know anything beforehand. The screen size itself is rumored to be bigger, and I don't think there is anything in the iOS 6 betas that reveal that. And as others have said, Siri itself was not truly revealed in the iOS 5 beta, but sure enough it was there for the GM. I think the big features that they wish to keep hidden are excluded from betas, tested internally to every extreme, and then released with the GM.

While certainly possible, I agree with earlier posts that say it will probably still be an extra row for icons. As for the presentation, I think Apple might briefly mention the extra row, but their main focus of the longer screen will be for more app real estate and games/movies.

I don't think it will be (I think it will just be an extra row) but I'd say I personally would prefer this use of the extra space over just another row.

What if Apple dedicates this extra screen spot (space) for iAds? LOL, people would go mad!

Yeah.. they would. I know I'd be pissed.

I at first thought the OP was going to suggest this was the possible reason and I was ready to rant even at the thought.

But yeah, if they let it be widgets that would be pretty cool.

It's too bad I think it will be just a boring extra row of icons (that I think looks weird on the homescreen imho).

Maybe they could move the search bar to the top of the home screen...

Then when you swipe left you can access widgets (like Notification center).

That would work well, and it would also be just like Launchpad in Mountain Lion.

I don't disagree with the addition of another row of icons, its just not a given. The iPad has waaaay more screen real estate , yet only one more row of icons. They could have easily fit more. as far as the preview of ios6 not showing a hint at another row, nobody has a screen to fit it to.

I honestly doubt that that will happen, because Apple does not like to stray from what they know works.

If you truly need a phone which has widgets go to the Android lineup.

Or you can always just jailbreak which opens up a world of possibilites for customization.

While widgets would be useful, the battery drain would be excessive. Most likely the extra real estate will be for watching movies, games, reading a magazine or book
As for the extra row of Apps, ah no big deal. Most people don't care. The overall size of the iPhone screen is whats important for what everyone wants to use it for.
