I can easily sell my 4s for $450 and end up having to pay less then $300 for the iP5, I just can't decide if it's truly worth it or not.

So you can make over $150 in cash while getting a brand new better phone... and you're not sure if it's worth it or not...??

WOW so many great posts and great points made...too many to list off the top of my head.

But to answer one or two of the people that mentioned if I can get $450 for my iP4s, why not sell it? You have to remember that yes, I will get the phone for $379...but I must also pay the $325 + $35 (upgrade fee)....all in all, I think I've been convinced to hold out and go with the 5S...another great point someone made was the "S" versions always seem to get the issues ironed out and it might be wise to wait a year until all apps are able to adjust to the extra 1/2"

Thanks everyone!

Patience, my young Padawan

If I didn't have an upgrade available on my AT&T account I'd say "F-It" too... at least until I had the upgrade. Paying full uncontracted retail is ridiculous.

EXACTLY! So the iPhone 5 is a great phone, and it would be nice to get one sooner rather than later. But is it worth paying an extra $250 (or more) to get right away? Perhaps for some people it is, but I'll patiently wait for a while and install iOS 6 on my "obsolete" 4S for now.

Who knows, maybe AT&T will move up my full upgrade eligibility by six months once enough of their gotta-have-it-now customers have paid for the privilege of being first in line. Once the initial rush has passed, I'll call them and ask them to waive the $250 as well as the $36 upgrade fee. If they do so, I'll sign up for another two years, and if they don't, then perhaps I'll consider my other options (like paying the ETF, now at $215 and less by then, and signing up with Verizon or Sprint instead).

Millions and millions of people still have the Iphone 3, and are doing just fine.

Our family (across 2 accounts) have 4 3's, 1-4 and 1-4s. We are getting 2 of the I-5s at this point and still have two phones eligible for upgrades now, one next spring.

There is no real reason to even upgrade now, but we will.

so let me get this straight...you can either keep the older phone and get $0, or buy the NEW one and MAKE $150?

How is that in any way a hard decision?

I'm sticking to my 2-year contract and keeping my 4S.

same, why bother and go through all the trouble to get the phone off contract?

and i get the 64 GB (i have alot of songs and i use it as a legitimate iPod as well as a phone) so if i get it off contract even if i sell my 4S it'll be a ridiculous price and ill still have to pay more.

im just going to wait, and just use my 4S (like i did with my 3GS, but the 3GS isn't going to be supported after iOS6 from what i read)for development and get the 5S next year when it comes out :D

I have 2 iPhones on our family plan, bought 1 year apart so that I can upgrade one each year and give the older model to my significant other. She's a girl so she doesn't care what she has.

1) If you have to "justify" you likely should not get it!

2) The 4S with the new OS should be fine:)

1a) Very true, there's no point in buying something just to have the latest. Yet millions do. It's the keeping up with friends syndrome that drive a huge portion of the consumers in debt. Ironically it's usually the ones that cannot afford it that buy the latest stuff.

2) Not only is the 4S quite good, but it's likely you've already paid for it, so most people are operating free and clear except for carrier charges.

Why not learn all their is to learn about the phone you have. If it's doing what you want it to, then you're in great shape.

It's no different than buying a computer. Yet that said, Apple has conditioned it's followers to upgrade, upgrade, upgrade.

I was upgrading frequently, because my demanding work, required lots of resources from my computer.

But with the iPhone it's different. A lot different. I'm not saying that it's a bad idea to upgrade, but using a little common sense can go a long ways.

I won't mind waiting a year for all the Lightning Connector and related accessory issues to settle out, and getting another year out of the accessories and cables I have now. Also, I liked how the 4S had the same form factor as the 4, so there were plenty of cases & screen protectors available -- wouldn't mind if that happened again (5 --> 5S).

I am looking forward to upgrading to iOS6, though.

Regards,
Tom

I know the iP5 is a 1/2 second faster and a 1/2" larger, which will no doubt be helpful to some. I just trying to justify dropping the money on this new product. I can easily sell my 4s for $450 and end up having to pay less then $300 for the iP5, I just can't decide if it's truly worth it or not.

As far as I know there won't be any difference or perks in regards to having iOS 6 on the 4s or 5...if there is, someone please let me know.

So what's your thoughts, are you going to take the plunge or hold off for a year? Believe I'm the worst hole in my pocket spender, blow cash on things I don't need and so on, so if I'm thinking twice, there must be a lot of others thinking the same.

On what planet do you think you can easily get $450 for your 4s?

You're considering spending $750 for an iphone? Jesus christ. If you're not eligible for an upgrade discount, just wait. Just try to justify to yourself that it's "1/2 second faster" and other nonsense so you don't feel bad.

The fact that this is a 4G LTE phone and you can join everybody else in the future is reason enough to upgrade. You're just faced with a ridiculous no-contract price, which is the only reason why you're even making this thread.

Another vote for keeping the 4s... after I live with iOS 6 for a while I might change my mind, but I was really hoping for more out of the iPhone 5.

I admit that I can't put my finger on what exactly I feel is missing... I am disappointed that NFC isn't there, and the thought of all new plugs and cases just doesn't make it seem worth it to me. Don't get me wrong.... iPhone phone 5 is a nice upgrade, but I guess the iPhone 5s (or whatever it will be called) might be be the upgrade cycle I'm following.

I'm sure nobody cares, but getting this off my chest just feels better. :)

I think it's silly to buy any of the "S" phones [4S/3GS/future 5S?] when they are the same phones as the predecessor, only slightly better. I'd rather wait for a new, redesigned phone which would be a bigger upgrade. Buying the 3G, then 4, then 5, skipping the 3GS, 4S, etc just makes more sense IMO. But, if you are happy with your 4S then keep it. I think the biggest reason for most people to upgrade to the 5 is the LTE, or they just like the way the new device looks.

I am ALSO keeping my 4S. My 4S is my first iPhone. On contract until next Fall (2013). Will be getting the 5S at that time :D

I really don't see any need to upgrade to the 5. The bigger screen is nice, the LTE is obviously a plus, and the fact this it's faster is obviously enticing. But I don't think I would EVER upgrade every year. Even though in a few days my 4S will be considered an "older generation", it still feels fresh and spanking new to me. Not only that, but physically it's mint and will run iOS6 smooth as butter, according to many testers. I'm also excited that the 4S will get the panoramic camera mode and fly over in maps. I'm thankful that it gets all the features that the 5 gets with iOS6.

Someone above me said it makes no sense to be on the S cycle, and upgrade with every S model...but if you think about it, it does make sense. Sure, we will get the 2nd installment of essentially the same phone, but the S always has upgrades. So if you continue to upgrade with the S models, then you will constantly get the BEST iPhone out of each 2 year generation. 3<3GS, 4<4S, 5<5S. I'm not saying it's a better decision to be on the S cycle, but I don't think it's worse. And since my first iPhone was an "S", it only makes sense to stay on the S cycle.

I may be alone here, but I actually love having an older generation product. And the fact that the 4S is the last iPhone EVER to have the 30 pin connector, and the 3.5" screen kind of makes me love my phone more. It's sort of a vision of how the iPhone once was for years.

The 5 looks amazing, performs amazing, will sell like hot cakes, and will soon be widespread across the world. And YES, I will be a little envious. But my 4S is a solid phone and I'm sure it will stay that way until I upgrade next year. Plus, I don't really feel that bad. People are still signing 2 yr contacts on the iPhone 4. :p

Best reason to keep my iPhone 4s (with Verizon) is to also keep my unlimited data plan!

That's what unlocked 32GB 4S's are going for currently.

Especially because if you wait and hold out for the 5S next year, you won't get nearly the same for that 4S by reselling it in 2013.
Exactly. For me it's financially prudent to sell my unlocked 32GB 4S and upgrade to the 5. I figure I can easily get $425 for it on eBay paying for a 32GB iPhone 5, AppleCare and tax.

It helps that my unlimited throttle cap on at&t will go up to 5GB on the LTE data plan.

I would upgrade, and I would love to, but I can't justify paying $550, and AT&T won't budge with helping me out so I would be able to afford it. So it's more of not being able to justify the cost of the upgrade. I saw the phone today and really liked it, especially that it's really light.

I agree, I have 2 NEW 5's one for me and one for my wife, Arrived Friday.. Im in the same boat... We like the feel of our 4's better they are a bit heavier and when you text the screen feels more solid! Pluc the speakers on the 4's seem to be MUCH louder! Not worth the 500.00 we spent on the 2 5's with the cases and screen protectors the total was 500.oo Maps are better on Ios 5! Saving the 500 bucks!
