Would you guys get the G2 over the S5?

Better battery, bigger display in smaller body, knock knock feature, OIS, IPS display (better for me than AMOLED), same processor and GPU underclocked, same 2GB RAM, etc.

Only advantage I see for the S5 IMO is that being released with 4.4 guarantees at least another 3 updates, while the G2 might not get past 4.4 or 4.5. Well, add the SD card in there also.

Thoughts?

Oh, and the G2 is cheaper, comes with 32GB and no Knox. And on screen buttons! A personal favorite.

I loved the G2 but it is a heavy phone. I just could not get past the button on the back though. I loved the knock knock feature but it only works if you are out of an app. The battery is awesome on the G2….

Well it works everywhere but if you're in app you can only tap the notification bar.

To the person asking: It's a great phone and I'd say it's at least on a par with the S5, if not better than it. The back buttons can feel awkward at first but after a few days I was hitting them just fine and tbh I only really find myself using them to adjust the volume of music when the phones in my pocket, whereby actually having them on the back makes them easier to hit than if they were on the side.

On the performance and battery side of things you'd probably need to wait for some in depth reviews but the G2 comfortably makes a day and the specs are pretty similar to the S5 so I imagine the speed difference will be negligible.

Having an S4 running 4.4.2, the S5 feels like a S4s to me just like the iPhone 's' series. This time though even the software is not newer.

Basically Samsung and apple have settled and keeping the status quo won't hurt either as millions are going to buy the s5 and i6 this year.

However I am not going to foolishly throw $650+ on these devices when nexus phones are pretty much caught up with them at $350+. No amount of flashy features are worth the extra money at all IMO.

I agree, but the Nexus line is still not a great option right now due to camera and battery life.

I bought the Nexus 5 and returned it due to several reasons: weaker speaker, wifi signal and vibration motor than my S3, worst camera than my S3 (slightly), mostly same battery life, etc.

It didn't felt like a big upgrade.

I prefer Nexus phones, but since I already have the Nexus 7 I'll buy another phone to have great battery and camera.

Camera and battery life are slowly catching up and nexus 5 seems to be a huge improvement over 4 too.

I really want Sony and HTC to step up their games as I hate both Samsung and lg's UI and extra features I don't want or need.

Hopefully lenovo keeps the moto x line going. That would be my goto phone if updates are promised and delivered.

Absolutely brilliant marketing by Samsung in this year's Oscars. They did it in the 2012 Summer Olympics with the S3. They did it again this year when the whole world is watching. Olympics, Academy Awards, Super Bowl, NBA, etc. Everywhere when MILLONS AND MILLONS are watching. All over the web now.

They basically used Ellen Degeneres doing a live selfie cam ad for the Note 3. Then her selfie pic with all those celebrities became the most retweeted ever on Twitter. Then a first ad for the S5. Another blockbuster hit with Samsung's flagship. That heart monitor is one S5's best features. It may not be useful to everyone now but that feature will in the longer run when some folks decides they want to live longer. It is more of Samsung to break more into the medical field that they have been quietly for the last few years.

If Samsung wants to break into the medical field, it won't be through a heart rate monitor. All you need is finger to feel a pulse to get a heart rate. I would be more interested in a Pulse Ox than a heart rate monitor.

^^ Not to mention it works the same way as 1000s of heart rate monitor apps in Google play lol.

I remember s health on my s4. It could never give me the correct temperature or humidity level in our home. Even after long periods of no touching the device. Such a fail.

Yes S - health has to be the most inacurate piece of rubbish ever. It looks pretty, has smiley faces too but by god its actual readings are so whole inacurate you would be better asking a lama what the temperature is or a whale to count how many steps you have taken....

I am pretty sure that its beyond most OEM's to do a top of the line specialty app..They should just bother trying and let the developer community come up with better suited solutions..I find the Nike apps to be very good..Why would I go for something else? Just pay Nike to bring that app on Android/Samsung ..

I find the S-Health pretty accurate for pedometer-based tracking. You can't do this on Iphone/ios device without using/paying for an extra add-on kit (that you need to carry around). And S-Health is also not a GPS based exercise tracking app which usually suck a lot of battery and need to be activated when you are doing exercise. I have S-health always turned on 24/7 with minimum battery usage and it can track even when you are indoors and it runs in the background (unlike many iOS exercise apps).

S health accurate on the phone just not so much on the gear..works very well generally to me.

Well, the bold statement is simply incorrect. There are many pedometer apps that utilize the iPhone's M7 coprocessor. Amongst the most well known is the Fitbit app--will track your steps just like their tracking hardware yet no external 'add-on kit' is required.

And last I checked, you also have to carry around your Galaxy device if you want S-health to track your steps. Hmmm, what would be more comfortable to carry in a pocket or armband, an iPhone or a Galaxy Note 3 or S4/S5....;)

Well all I can say is that I have both fitbit flex /force and a jawbone up.

Those three devices have always given a very similar reading of my steps.

S-health is way off and in an over generous way.

Even on a simple 60 minute walk the s-health can give you a few thousand steps difference.

Unless you have something to compare it with, how can you be sure it's accurate? For me if three other devices are showing one tally and shealth is showing a wildly different tally then something is wrong not with the three showing similar reading but with the one that is wildly off.

This is genuinely disappointing to hear. I was quite proud of myself for getting to 10,000 steps :p

Lol. Yeah in fairness shealth does make you feel good about yourself with its overly positive reading - I guess its like a placebo effect. But hey if a placebo makes you feel good, all hail the placebo (and sod the accuracy) :D:D:D

Actually the best part is Ellen Degeneres was tweeting during the oscars on her iphone :p

That is pretty generous of Samsung to donate $3M to charity after the 3M retweets from Ellen DeGeneres Twitter account.

I have my qualms with both Apple and Samsung. They could be the biggest tech rivals since Nintendo vs Sega in the early 90's. BTW, looking forward to Seth Rogen make a movie about the Nintendo vs Sega rivalry.

But all of them each have qualities that still makes me admire them. With Apple, it is hardware design. I love their hardware design. I love how they package it together inside/out. I love the simplicity. With Samsung, it is how they can throw everything but the kitchen sink onto the device. The charities. The free perks aka Galaxy Gifts. They can be first mover the way Sega was, but they take alot of chances. Galaxy Cameras goes beyond Android appearing in just phones or tablets. Apple, like Nintendo has always been conservative, secretive, and wants to rule with a tight fist. But Apple can make software and hardware. Nintendo can make great software with underpowered hardware at times.

I do like Samsung phones because it gives users a mechanical home button. It is another option to wake up the screen like Apple does. HTC, Sony, and Nexus generally can be awaken with the power button. I had to install SMS Wakeup on the One and uninstall Motion Actions. I now rely on the power button or incoming text to wake up the screen. LG G2 has Knock-On and Moto X has Active Display. And I like capacitive buttons over on-screen like for back and menu. I miss that menu button. I never got into the multi-task button. Shame Samsung switched the menu one for it in the S5. But the layout to wake up the screen and navigate is still good on the Samsungs. Mechanical home button and capacitive back button is all I really need.

Combine that with all of the money they paid to advertise on the Oscars and the amount they paid her to use the Note 3 during the show they've obviously gotten their moneys worth in the last week.
