During daylight? Is that occurring a lot in luxury jewelry stores? Or in your neighborhood? :D

Have you thought about that the passwords or access to locks are different after hours etc? :D

Why bother with a bullet proof case?

You point the gun at the Apple employee who can open it.
Much easier :D

LOL. If somebody tried that at Grand Central Station, they'd be quickly surrounded by police and national guard...

I hope all this insane pricing is speculation. I love watches and understand Apple is trying to break into the market by going a more fashionable/premium look but these $5000+ are nuts to me. I do plan on buying a SS one but here are my main gripes:

1. This is apple. Not movado, Rolex, Tag ect. The reason people spend thousands of dollars on these kind of watches is because they are timeless and they've built a name for themselves with their craftsmanship and designers. They do one thing and they do it well therefore have stood the test of time. Originality is key too. There are 3 models and they are all the exact same besides the casing. many people want a high end watch to stand out not all look relatively similar to what everyone else is already wearing

2. Price disparity. The tech inside these watches is exact same. $350-5000 range is laughable. I hate to say it but I think if I saw a dude wearing a gold apple watch knowing it was 5000-10000 bucks like many are speculating I would shake my head at the fool as you'd likely see someone wearing the sport version right next him doing the exact some tech. My friends will likely already tease me for spending a grand on a smart watch. Heck they told me I was crazy for spending 250 on a pebble steel.

3. Keeping up to date. Let's face it, there will be a new iPhone and a new watch in a couple of years and you know damn well If you're takng the time to post in the forums right now that you're gknna want that new watch for all the new features and future compatibility and you're not gonna wanna downgrade to silver the next time around. Who is gonna drop 5 grand every couple years on the new apple watch. Unless they have a trade in program good luck finding someone to buy your gold 1st gen watch that is already old news.

4. I think the biggest feature would be "spot the fanboy" functionality. Would you buy an 18k gold iPhone 6 for 5000 bucks or a regular gold iPhone for $500 knowing you're gonna buy a new one in a couple of years. No one is gonna say I like the color of gold so im gonna pay 4 grand more for the same thing

People defending these prices are mind boggling to me. The whole "then the sport is for you " and "do you expect them to just give it away" are ridiculous. There is nothing high end and prestigious about a watch u can send your heart beat and cheesey animated emojis. This thing should be functional and target the people who thought the pebble or other alternatives were too ugly to want to wear. If they truly go this route for the gold I hope they plan to offer a trade in program for upgrades of some kind or it is nonsensical to me. I think 2-3 grand would make much more sense than these 5-10 grand estimates but I guess we'll see.

This is all my opinion but I just can't believe some of these stuff I've been reading here. To each their own and good luck to all in whatever option you choose.

That depends on the oil painting!

I'd prefer the TV over a lot of the stuff I've seen!
Come on!!! You would pick this 4K HDTV over a $40 splashed mess of a painting?:D:D

i've seen some tweets from people saying at $499 or $549 they would upgrade to the stainless steel model. Gruber still thinks the base SS model will be twice the price of the Sport model which would put it close to $700. If Apple prices the base SS watch too high they'll have a harder time upselling people and most people will just stick with the Sport model. So I hope they price the SS with Sport band on the lower end and then work on the upsell with the bands. Knowing that some of the bands probably aren't going to be cheap pricing the watch really high will just put it out of reach for most people.

I agree.

Well, sir you can have this watch for $349

Or

There is this one that's exactly the same, same size, same specs, but it's shiny and heavier (Artificially heavy for no reason is good in a watch sir) takes the exact same straps and it's only twice as expensive.

Sold :D

Think about this:

Would you value a 32" TV above an oil painting?

The TV can display the oil painting, actually ANY oil painting as well as video, games, and so much more! :D

If the TV was 18K gold, I might. It depends the painting.

A $20 Timex keeps time more accurately than an $100,000 Patek Philippe mechanical watch. Yet Patek Phillipe is still in business.

You just proved my point. You mention one-of-a-kind handcrafted mechanical watches by a company founded in the 1800's. These are the expensive watches into the high thousands that stand the test of time. They're are artfully designed and unique. They are not sold to be functional, they are artwork/jewelry in my eyes. For collectors and enthusiasts.

The apple watch is a software driven watch that should be functional. If they wanna make it sexy then I'm all for it but don't expect overpricing the first generation model into the rolex territory to do anything but sucker in the people who will overpay and drink the koolaid.

$5000 plus for a mass-produced 1st Gen smartwatch that is obsolete in a few years when it can no longer function with the new features likely to be implemented in the iPhones = mind-boggling. Let's not forgot apple is a computer company started in a garage not a reputable high-end hand-made watch company. To price them in the same category is laughable

Someone tweeted John Gruber claiming they know for a fact some :apple: employees are wearing Edition watches. Seems odd if this model is going to be $5k-$10K. :apple: employees don't need to wear a gold watch to properly test the device.

The apple watch can be made out of platinum and still won't be considered a fine timepiece, the guts are still the same as the lower end models (like overpriced ETA watches).

I expect it will be priced at 3-3.5k; I wouldn't bother buying the gold edition imo it's a terrible purchase.

Hell 42mm smart watches i just don't see the point, make it 44-48mm instead :)

Only if there would be some reason to test connectivity with the iPhone thru different materials.

I have no idea if gold is better/worse at blocking signals than other materials.
Though, I agree you would not need to wear this to find out, I'm sure this would be easy to test in the lab.

It is possible Apple offered a 'Pay to upgrade' your test model deal.

Don't be fooled by Veblen goods and the Swiss watch industry. Even Rolexes are relatively cheap to make, and they've been using the same movement in most of their watches for a long time. You're paying for marketing and privilege. I've seen pretty convincing arguments that a $8K Rolex likely costs less than $500 to make. This is jewelry, and it seems Apple wants to get in on the action.

It seems wise to me to test all models, especially a really expensive one. Plus there are a reasonable number of Apple employees for whom $10,000 would be chump change.

Seems to me all this "controversy" with the Edition Watch centers around those who think anyone spending thousands of dollars on a watch is just wrong, obscene, whatever. And those who are repulsed that Apple would dab their toe in the Veblen goods water. This "not for the rest of us" crap is just that as the $349 Sport Watch has the same features and functionality as the Edition Watch.

I hope you're not referring to me. I've owned Rolex watches, amongst others, and I'm wearing an Omega Aqua Terra as I type this.

We shouldn't be fooling ourselves into thinking that a company like Rolex makes their watches by hand. The process is nearly entirely done by machine, outside of a few things like applying hands and markers. People buy them because they're expensive and they buy into the lore. It's jewelry.

If Rolex can make an $8K steel watch that is made mostly by machine, I see no reason why Apple couldn't make a $5K+ gold watch. The amount of research and manufacturing dollars between an Apple Watch and a Rolex probably isn't as far apart as we'd like to imagine.

Nope not referring to you. :) But I've seen plenty of people on Twitter and elsewhere all worked up over the Edition Watch. People that will never be buying it. Why get worked up over the Edition Watch when the $349 Sport model exists?

Yeah, I'd imagine that Apple expects the Sports model to be sold to most of the population, but most of the population thinks they should be able to afford all of the models.

What I'm trying to say is that people expect the edition to cost even 10k wich is nonsense, it's a gold case and nothing more :) i don't think it will go over 3.5k specially when Apple loves to make the statement that luxury it's not only for the super rich.

Rolex well imo they are waaaay overpriced at the current market.

But if Hublot can get away with those obscene prices I don't see why Apple can't jump in the bandwagon :D

Ps. Love the aquaterra.

Yeah, I'm guessing in the $3K-$5K range, depending on how much gold is actually in that thing. Granted, I do think that Apple would be better off making it too expensive. They need a halo product that gives credibility, which will turn into sales at the lower end. We've really not even seen a smart watch that doesn't scream "geek," so Apple has to figure out a way to fight that...and I've owned a Pebble and fitness band, so I'm labelling myself a geek when wearing those, too.
