This happens to me almost always since 3.0. It NEVER gets my GPS location anymore. I can't watch the blue dot move as I drive. It's really dumb now. It used to at least semi-work.

I am having the same problem since 3.0, with 2.2.1 it was spot on. I hope this is fixed in 3.1 with all the cool GPS apps coming out.

Snort! :)

Although, it stands for Global Positioning System.

ss957916, just a suggestion, but you might want to do a little research before posting and inserting your foot into your mouth.

I get it, I'm a freckin' idiot :) I stand by my pixie dust assertion though.

This happened to me too, I fixed it by turning off Location Services then went to maps and it asked me to turn Location Services on, I did this and it seems to wake up the GPS system and it becomes much more accurate.

I liked your pixie dust assertion. Apple accomplishes a lot via pixie dust. :)

Anyhow, my snort was directed to ss957916 and not you. Sorry.

I should have posted this way to get my message across.

Good comeback. :D

However, it stands for Global Positioning System.

3 Ways to locate where you are

True. Except the iPhone doesn't use satellites.

iPhone can approximate location using one of three methods:

1) GPS - yes, it uses satelites. You need your phone to have a view of the sky. This is the most accurate.

2) Triangulating the location of nearby cell towers. This is how the 2G iPhones do it. With no GPS signal, all iPhones can approximate your location to the nearest cell towers. This is not very accurate at all

3) By using cell tower info and fishing around for WI-Fi signals. The cell-tower system uses information from Google, which also provides the map data. Wi-Fi location details come from Skyhook Wireless. This is more accurate than #2, but less accurate than GPS.

When you're in a building, with no view of the sky, you're getting a location approximation based on the cell towers and the phone's ability to triangulate.

Hey guys, I was going to make a new thread, but saw this one and decided to post my question here.

The apple store told me that the iPhone uses satellites to help determine it's position. Is that true? I find it really hard to believe as I thought that kind of technology was years away. I'm sure the military uses this type of system, but apple? I mean does Steve jobs have his own private NASA to launch apple iPhone satellites?

Also, can anyone tell me why only one speaker on my phone works?

Thanks!

No, it's not true. All the information posted in this thread is all lies

However, Steve Jobs does have his own satellite, he uses it to spy on Bill Gates...

lol. I get the sarcasm.

Also, since so many here don't seem to know, you cannot triangulate position with just one satellite. You need a bunch of them. There, I held back on the technical explanation. I'm so proud of myself.
