Does anyone know if I download the update in itunes if I'll be able to use that same file on mulitple devices? I'm on satellite internet and have a monthly data limit.

I believe there's an iOS version for each end every device (one for an iPad 2 Wi–Fi, another one for an iPhone, one more for an iPad 3 with LTE, etc.) If I'm correct you'd have to download iOS multiple times… probably. Don't take my word for it though.

My question is, how does Apple get the OS on the phones, when the GM has only been out a week or so, and these phones have been in productions for what I assume to be at least a month or so.

they have special machines to load it fast, not like someone is doing it one by one with itunes. the GM goes gold before it comes out and my guess is that when they start loading it onto phones that are waiting for an OS. then boxing and shipping.

They will put complete running versions on the phones like a imaged disc on a computer, it will go on as fast as usb can take it.
