there
The Mac mini that is being used daily in my house runs on 4gb ram which is sufficient for El Capitan, the mini needs more ram to run “oh my god, what a highestsierra OS X you have mini grandma” aka 12.1.3334 O$X

Hm, I actually just upgraded the Mini to High Sierra and it runs OK with just 4 GB, at least for what I'm using it for. It's not being used as an everyday computer but if it was, I'd definitely at least double the RAM to 8 GB. One thing's for sure, I'd forgotten how painfully slow the HDD is in these things. Gonna get some proper tools for it today and the SSD's going in first thing tonight when I get back home.

EDIT: Put in a spare 1 TB SSD that I was using as a backup disk and now it flies. I've been using it as my Plex and iTunes server and it's been absolutely fantastic so far, some of the best $200 I've ever spent.

I can understand the negativity too, but the 2014 minis are still decent machines. I wouldn’t buy one new now, but I bought one new when they first came out (2.8GHz, 8GB RAM, 1TB fusion drive) and it has worked flawlessly over the past almost four years. It has been on basically 24/7 and serves as the main desktop my wife and I share. I also have a 2012 minin that works as a home server. They are such great machines it would be a shame for no new models to ever come out.

Basically the same story for me but i gifted my upgraded i5 2012 ( 16 ram, 500 SSD ) to a friend in need whom was running my old G5 iMac that the power supply shot craps on. He is still running it! My 2014 runs good enough that depending on what they FINALLY come out with for a replacement I may just upgrade the fusion drive to a 1TB blade SSD that OWC is finally offering and run it longer.

If BH Photo fire sales a i7, 16 Gb ram, 1 TB SSD mini when the new ones come out that may be in the cards as well.

I just got a 2012 i7 2.3 GHz mini. Planning to upgrade RAM in it and encountered this when I used Crucial's RAM compatibility tool: the two below seem to be the same but one is obviously marketed as Mac memory - that one is compatible according to them and the other is not. They are the same price, so can anyone tell what the difference is? To me it looks like they both meet the requirements provided by Apple.

I went ahead and got a new mini today from bestbuy. 2014 mini not 18 which is still rumored. But new to me. Open box 601 100 dollars off. Excellent condition. Like new. 2.6ghz i5 8gb ram. 8 is enough for me. I traded in my 2011 mid Mac min for 88 dollars and my dads late 2011 MacBook Pro for 304 dollars. I backed up everything first and then reinstalled the os. So no worries. I paid 368.98 with apple care plus for 3 years after tradeins. Bestbuy only sell apple care plus. But originally 699 plus 100 for apple care. So 800 dollar machine plus tax. So almost half off not a bad deal. And with apple care even if they obsolete the 2014 mini I am still covered for 3 years. So not a bad deal.

They won't obsolete a product until at least five years after it is discontinued.

I'm not knocking the deal - you got a new machine you wanted without laying out a lot of cash. But they didn't really take anything "off", you sold them two computers at rock-bottom prices.

Anyway - enjoy the new Mini. :)

I did not sell anything rock bottom. I sold two obsolete machines at verygood prices. The macbook pro 1500 dollars when it was new in 2011. So 304 back is not bad. Even the new mb pro my dad got in june also 1500 is only worth 704 tradein when I looked just out curiosity. Not even half. So 304 back for a 7 year old machine is not bad. Even ebay was about 200 only. Only 1 with box was about 300 but from AU not USA wbere I am from. The mini was a little low at 88. But ebay is about 150 max since its obsolete by apple as of december 04 2017 and does not take mojave. 2012 models would of been worth more or maybe even worth keeping. But 2011 is obsolete. And after mojave is out or in 1 year it won't be even close to 304.

So in the wait and anticipation of a real update to the mac mini, I ordered an old 2010 model from ebay (120 + some shipping). It's the 2.66ghz model, so at least the fastest on that front. I kind of wanted one that still had a superdrive in it, in the event I decide to pick up a new updated one if those ever manifest, so I could maybe give it to my nephews to watch dvd's on. I think if I did that i'd drop it back to OSX 10.6 and see how it does. I had wanted to give the mojave patcher a try with it, but reading through the thread on that seems like the older gpu's just aren't great on it with the new graphics api.

I've got a spare set of 8gb's of ram I'll be trying out in it, and I'm trying to figure out if the extra few bucks for a 250~gb ssd is worth it over a 120. Just hoping the ram will be ok, since I think the kit i have is a bit higher spec than what's currently in there.

I'm just really hoping apple doesn't go overboard with a new mini model. A more "pro" focused one is fine, but the real appeal to me is the much lower entry cost.

The problem is the resolution output of the older minis. I have a 60hz 4k TV which is nothing worth bragging over but the mini can't do it. The new one hopefully has Vega M graphics or at least support the faster 120hz@4k with 12bit depth. If that's the case not only will I buy the new mini the day of I'll probably get a 120hz tv too.

Under-discussed detail I'm super hyped about is the triple display capability.
I'm excited about it, but a little concerned about how it will preform on the 630 UHD graphics card.

I only use my machine for web browsing and productivity for the most part, only a small amount of creative work in Photoshop or Premier. I do worry that the card isn't really powerful enough to allow for smooth work in these apps if its also powering 2x 4k@60hz monitors, or even just in general. I don't think it will matter for me, but I can see this as being a big problem for some people who will need to get an eGPU.

I ordered the i7 model with 16GB RAM (plan to upgrade to 32GB eventually) and 1TB SSD. Hooking up to a Dell 38" Ultrawide monitor and an OWC TB3 Dock.

Just ordered the 2018 model with the 3.2ghz 6 core i7 and 512gb storage. I'll add more ram later myself.
Now i'm looking for a USB-C to USB-A 4 port hub. And a 4 bay USB-C RAID 5 enclosure.

My 2018 MM base i3. Just went from "Processing to Preparing for Shipment".
My i7/8GB/1TB/10gbE also!

Which is great, the i7 config is now showing delivery Nov 13-19th, and saw a couple people on twitter saying their mini has been delayed.

I ordered a base RAM, 256GB storage i7-8700 with 10GbE.

The storage upgrade prices are sinful, and they should have used M.2. If it looks like RAM upgrades will be too much of a hassle, I’ll refuse the shipment and won’t buy another Mac. They’ve pretty much alienated me at this point, so it wouldn’t be a big deal. About the only thing I use my old Mac Pro for at this point is iMessage via Remote Desktop. Everything else is Windows. I have a 2-3 year old MacBook that I haven’t powered on in months.

i7 delivery is still showing 6 Nov in the UK, however mine is showing 12 Nov, even though I ordered on October 30th... hmm..

Pulled the trigger: Mac Mini over iMac!

I've been waiting for too long for the new iMac and I've been considering the pros and cons of Mac Mini option in the past few days...

Pulled the trigger this morning: went to Apple store and picked up a Quad 2.3Ghz Mac Mini, Thunderbolt displlay, wireless keyboard and magic trackpad!

Will order tonight an SSD and new memory, the SSD will probably be the Samsung 830 256Gb and the memory Crucial or Corsair, but don't know yet if I will go for 8Gb or 16Gb, maybe 16Gb is overkill...

I will put the 5400rpm 1Tb HDD in an external USB 3.0 enclosure, an extra external HDD is always useful.

So far I'm 100% happy with my choice, I don't play and don't do video editing, so the HD4000 should be fine for me.
The possibility to upgrade the HDD is also a good bonus and important for me, something which would be much more difficult on the new iMac, if even possible.
Good choice, people seem to accumulate drives... throw one in a case and bam!

I love that it's probably going to ship from China, and will go from China to NY in 3 days. :) Logistics are awesome. Common apple! Gimme a tracking number.

Just ordered the base model ... why? Because it is my second desktop. Earlier this year I changed my 2010 iMac 27" (16GB memory + 250GB SSD) for a Windows PC incl. 4K Display. It was a very good choice, but I really miss iMovie and some other stuff which is simply easier @OSX. I'm planing to upgrade the memory, but this has no priority. I will not use it often and will handle iMovie well (on a hobby video maker level).

I ordered mine, with 512 GB. I took the corporate discount, only 6.5%. I guess it’s better than nothing:

Total with taxes is 1825 SGD, which is 24% cheaper than prices from Europe where I used to live.

Just ordered my Mini. Went for the 6-core i5, 16GB memory, 256GB storage.

Feels like I've come full circle my first Mac was a 1st gen Mac Mini I bought back in 2005 to learn web design. Lasted about 4/5 years then moved on to a MacBook, then a 21 iMac and finally a 27 iMac (late 2013) that I'm still using until the Mini arrives.
